MATTHEW, JOHN JACOB
November 16, 2002

John Jacob Matthew, a retired self-employed mechanic, died Thursday at Adventist Health Center in Lumberton, Miss. He was 85. Mr. Matthew was born in New Orleans and lived in Poplarville, Miss. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Vera Smith Matthew; two daughters, Barbara Stretz and Janet Lobue, both of Metairie; a brother, Millard Matthew of Covington; a sister, June Evans of Big Branch; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held later. White Funeral Home in Poplarville handled arrangements.

JOHNSON, ALVIA LEE UNDERWOOD
November 16, 2002

Alvia Lee Underwood Johnson, a retired food service employee with Total Community Action's Law Street Head Start Program, died Nov. 9 at her home. She was 88. Mrs. Johnson was born in Gibsland and lived in New Orleans for the past 56 years. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the Urban League. Survivors include a son, Sylvester Carl Johnson; a brother, Audie Underwood; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at noon at Brooks United Methodist Church, 4000 Buchanan St. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CLARK, ELIZABETH KAZAN
November 15, 2002

Elizabeth Kazan Clark, a retired domestic worker, died Nov. 7 of undetermined causes at her home. She was 66. Mrs. Clark was born in New York and lived in New Orleans for the past 56 years. Survivors include two sons, James and Ernder Clark; seven daughters, Phyliss Clark Stewart, Cheryl, Patricia and Delores Clark, Kathy Clark Johnson, Juliette Clark Gums, and Sylvia Clark Reed; a brother, Alexander Kazan; two sisters, Shirley Salsberry and Barbara Robinson; 21 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at Tilly's Funeral Home, 2831 St. Claude Ave. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Park in Avondale.

PENN, ROY MILTON
November 16, 2002

Roy Milton Penn died Nov. 4 of undetermined causes at Highline Community Hospital in Seattle. He was 53. Mr. Penn was born in Covington and lived in Seattle. Survivors include a son, Roy M. Penn Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; four daughters, Renita Abram of Everett, Wash., Sharon Penn of Phoenix, Ariz., Angela Cooper of Abita Springs and Valarie James; 10 brothers, Clarence, Alton and Ambus Penn, all of Covington, and Floyd and Ronald Penn, both of Folsom, and Huey Penn of Los Angeles, Charles Penn of Oklahoma City, Okla., Horace Penn of Atlanta, Benjamin Penn of Cardiville, Ga., and Craig Penn of Cedar Hill, Texas; five sisters, Rose M. Heisser of Lynwood, Calif., Hazel P. Louis of Covington, Carla Baham of Loranger, Gladys Penn of San Bernardino, Calif., and Tanisha Penn of San Antonio, Texas; and five grandchildren. A funeral was held Wednesday at Starlight Baptist Church in Covington. Burial was in Wilson cemetery. Richardson Funeral Home in Hammond was in charge of the arrangements.

REFUGE, JO ANN 'BO' COLLINS
November 16, 2002

Jo Ann "Bo" Collins Refuge, a homemaker, died Nov. 9 of cancer at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 59. Mrs. Refuge was born in Algiers and lived in Gretna. She attended L.B. Landry High School. She was a member of Philadelphia Christian Church. Survivors include her husband, Bobbie J. Collins; two sons, Vernon Collins and Jerry Collins Sr.; three daughters, Lisa Refuge and Shanette and Nia Collins; her father, Frank Collins Sr.; four brothers, Charles and Stanley Collins and Elliott and Michael Francis; four sisters, Rebecca Nickerson, Sandra Collins, Jackie Muse and Lynette Johnson; and 10 grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Philadelphia Christian Church, 3127 Gen. Meyers Ave., Algiers. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Restlawn Park in Avondale. Davis Mortuary Service is in charge of arrangements.

BEARD, CHARLOTTE HOLBROOK
November 17, 2002

Charlotte Holbrook Beard, a retired teacher and librarian, died Thursday at her home. She was 87. Mrs. Beard was born in Eunice and lived in New Orleans before moving in Rayne. She graduated from Rayne High School and Louisiana State University, where she had received degrees in home economics and library science. She was former teacher in Lake Charles and worked in the Tulane Law School library. She was a U.S. Navy Wave from 1945 to 1953. She and her husband, the deceased Nathan G. Beard, became Tulane Law School fellows in 1988 and established the Nathan G. and Charlotte H. Beard Scholarship Fund to give financial assistance to students who served in the armed forces. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Schoen Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will be private.

BROWN, HERBERT JOSEPH SR.
November 17, 2002

Herbert Joseph Brown, a painter, died Friday of liver disease in Metairie. He was 62. Mr. Brown was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 32 years. He was a sergeant in the Army. Survivors include two sons, Larry W. and Herbert J. Brown Jr.; a daughter, Cheryl B. Anseman; three sisters, Lin Incardona, Charlene Tavan and Sheila Caruso; and 10 grandchildren. A Mass will be said Monday at 1 p.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 North Causeway Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Hope Mausoleum, New Orleans.

FORTADO, AUGUST ELWIN 'SONNY' III
November 15, 2002

August Elwin "Sonny" Fortado III, a taxi driver, died Wednesday of heart failure at Kenner Regional Medical Center. He was 50. Mr. Fortado was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, Jewel Adams Fortado; three sons, James, Timmy and August E. Fortado IV; a daughter, Star Fortado; two stepsons, Joseph and Randy Courtney; a brother, Leroy Fortado Sr.; four sisters, Paulette Massey, Diana Meredith, Diane Latour and Bonnie King; and five grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 6 p.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Burial will be private.

EVERETT, ROBERT WALTER JR.
November 25, 2002

Robert Walter Everett Jr., a retired micropaleontologist for Texaco, died Saturday at Flannery Oaks Nursing Home in Baton Rouge. He was 81. Mr. Everett was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a graduate of Jefferson Military College and Tulane University. He was a captain in the Army Air Corps. Survivors include a daughter, Robin Everett Jacob. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin today at 6 p.m. and Tuesday at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Mausoleum.

CHIOCCHIO, CARRIE MACE YOUNG
November 17, 2002

Carrie Mace Young Chiocchio, the secretary of Third Presbyterian Church, died Saturday at Touro Infirmary. She was 99. Mrs. Chiocchio was born in Rosepine and lived in New Orleans for the past 68 years. She was a graduate of Rosenberg High School in Rosenberg, Texas, and the Baptist Bible Institute, now known as the New Orleans Theological Seminary. She was a former secretary for Canal Boulevard Baptist Church, where she served for 38 years. She was also a Sunday school teacher and active member of several committees at Third Presbyterian Church. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Stanley and Oddino Stanley Chiocchio Jr.; a daughter, Katherine Chiocchio Niemczuk; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Ave. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m.

GAULENE, THELMA MARKHAM
November 17, 2002

Thelma Markham Gaulene, a homemaker, died Friday at her daughter's home in Pearl River. She was 91. Ms. Gaulene was born in Braithewaite and lived in Meraux for the past 10 years. Survivors include two daughters, Fay Gonzales Vogt and Peggy Guelfo; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Monday at 11 a.m. at Schoen Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Vincent de Paul cemetery.

THOMAS, WALLACE SR.
November 12, 2002

Wallace Thomas Sr., a retired carpenter, died Friday at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 80. Mr. Thomas was born in Eufaula, Ala., and lived in New Orleans for many years. He served as a sergeant in the Army and was in the New Guinea Campaign. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and a Battle Star. Survivors include his wife, Rosia Thomas; two sons, Wallace Thomas Jr. and Latherine Thomas Sr.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park.

HUGHES, ERVIN LOUIS JR.
November 13, 2002

Ervin Louis Hughes Jr., a retired painter, died Oct. 26 of renal failure at his home. He was 51. Mr. Hughes was born in Algiers and lived in Westwego for the past 10 years. Survivors include three sons, Ervin J. Hughes, Brad Hughes and Nicholas Ward; a daughter, Amanda Hughes; two brothers, Raymond and Bobby Hughes; and a sister, Mary Hopper. Mothe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

TORCZON, VERNON JAMES
November 20, 2002

Vernon James Torczon, a retired English professor at the University of New Orleans, died Sunday of a stroke at his home. He was 70. Mr. Torczon was born in Columbus, Neb., grew up in Tarnov, Neb., lived in Columbus, Ohio, and lived in Covington for the past 17 years. He graduated from Creighton University and received his doctorate in English literature from the University of Nebraska. Before teaching English for 25 years at UNO, Mr. Torczon taught at Ohio State University. He was a lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War. He played first base for a minor league team in the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system. Survivors include his wife, Ann Carey Torczon; three sons, Joseph Torczon of New York, James Torczon of New Orleans and Patrick Torcson; two daughters, Lindy Torczon Shepherd of Winter Park, Fla., and Laurel Torczon of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

JOHNSTON, MARGUERITE ARNOULT
November 13, 2002

Marguerite Arnoult Johnston, a homemaker, died Friday at Kenner Regional Medical Center. She was 78. Mrs. Johnston was born in New Orleans and lived in Harahan for the past four years. She was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church in Jefferson. Survivors include three sons, Alex Johnston, Edward Johnston Jr. and Paul Johnston Sr.; a daughter, Lydia J. Vela; three sisters, Marion A. Berault, Dorothy A. Puneky and Betty A. Guidry; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 1 p.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

November 8, 2002

Esther Sandrock, a retired theater employee, died Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center. She was 96. Mrs. Sandrock was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a member of True Vine Baptist Church. Survivors include nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at True Vine Baptist Church, 2008 Marigny Street. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Cypress Grove cemetery. Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
