Roland Johnson, a retired letter carrier, died May 30 of an aneurysm at Kenner Regional Medical Center. He was 68. Mr. Johnson was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a member of New Home Full Gospel Baptist Church, where he served on the Deacon Board. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Washington Johnson; two sons, Timothy and Ronnie Johnson; two daughters, Gwendolyn Hunter and Barbara Johnson; two stepsons, Louis and Michael Joseph Washington, both of Washington, D.C.; two stepdaughters, Mary Mason and Patricia Lewis; a sister, Willie Mae Young White; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at New Home Full Gospel Baptist Church, 4429 S. Claiborne Ave. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. Estelle J. Eleanor C. Helminski, a supervisor at River City Casino, died Monday of scleroderma at Northshore Regional Medical Center. She was 56. Ms. Helminski was born in Bayonne, N.J., and lived in Slidell for the past 21 years. She was a former employee of Grand Casino in Gulfport, Miss., and a member of the Scleroderma Support Group. Survivors include her companion, Rose Mary Lambros; five brothers, Charles "Jr." and Ronald Helminski of Newark, N.J., Richard Helminski of Griswold, Conn., Gary Helminski of Slidell and Daniel Helminski of Boston; and two sisters, Dolores Helminski of Newark and Nancy Colombo of Griswold. A Mass will be said Friday at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 313 Westchester Place, Slidell. Visitation will be Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West, Slidell, and Friday beginning at noon at the church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery.

Varrie Francois, a retired truck driver with Owens and Sons Building Materials, died Sunday at home from a brain tumor. He was 72. Mr. Francois was born in Independence and lived in New Orleans for the past 56 years. He was a member of Pilgrim Progress Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board and was a member of the Men's Department, Brotherhood Organization and the Trustee Board. Survivors include his wife, Alice W. Francois; and two brothers, Willie and Monfert Francois of Independence. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Progress Missionary Baptist Church, 3600 Loyola Ave. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. D.W. KELLER, BETTYE J. PIKE

Bettye J. Pike Keller, a retired rehabilitation director for the Lebanon, Pa., County Redevelopement Authority, died Monday at her home. She was 80. Mrs. Keller was born in Harrisburg, Pa., and lived in Cleon, Pa. and in Harvey. She was a graduate of John Harris High School in 1938 and Central Pennsylvania Business School. She was a member of Aurora United Methodist Church in New Orleans. She was a former member and past president of the Cleona Women's Club, where she initiated the first recycling program in Cleona. She was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sons, Thomas G. Keller of Hinckley, Ohio, and Christopher P. Keller of Kenner; a daughter, Kim Wold of Harvey; two sisters, Ella Kreiser of Harrisburg and Carrie Lehrich of Bullhead City, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. A funeral will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Kreamer Funeral Home, 618 E. Main St., Annville, Pa. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National cemetery with military honors.

Emelia D. McLain, a retired floral shop clerk, died Friday at St. Clare Manor in Baton Rouge. She was 89. Mrs. McLain was born in Biloxi, Miss., and lived in Denham Springs for the past 28 years. Survivors include a daughter, Midge Magee; a stepson, Ray McLain; two stepdaughters, Rosalie Dickerson and Leatte Sharp; three brothers, Roy, Bobby and Ernest Cooper Jr.; and two sisters, Claire Drinkard and Norma Blossman. Peter Joseph Abate, a retired electric delivery company truck driver and shoe repairman, died Tuesday of a heart attack at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 80. Mr. Abate was born in New Orleans and lived in Harahan for the past 44 years. He served as a Marine during World War II. He was a member of the Harahan branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served as branch president. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Susan Harlan; two sons, Harlan C. and Jason S. Abate; five daughters, Linda A. Atkinson, Donna S. Abate, Beckey J. Van Buskins, Shannon J. Impey and Holly L. Zurek; two brothers, Charles and John Abate; a sister, Nora Livingston; and 11 grandchildren. She was a member of Beautiful Zion Baptist Church and its choir, Star of Hope Chapter No. 17 Order of the Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary No. 2403, and All Saints Golden Age Club. He graduated from Booker T. Washington Senior High School and was a member of Local Union No. 567 and Wesley United Methodist Church, where he was president of the Men's Club. Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Burris Harris; a son, Ernest Lee Harris Jr.; a daughter, Tanyel Nicole Harris Gross; two stepsons, Ernest Taylor III and Melvin O'Neal Taylor; two stepdaughters, Thelma Yvonne and Denise Taylor; a sister, Shirley Casey of Compton, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.
