Carlos Manuel McClelland, a police officer, died Sunday of complications from meningitis at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital. He was 48. Mr. McClelland was a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish. He was a member of the New Orleans Police Department for 20 years and was a member of the Police Association of New Orleans and the Fraternal Order of Police. Survivors include a brother, Jimmie Sam McClelland, and a sister, Clara McClelland Caserta. A Mass will be said today at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 2320 Paris Road in Chalmette. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St. in Chalmette. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in New Orleans.

Clifton C. Chatman Jr., a retired security guard at Metropolitan Developmental Center in Belle Chasse, died Sunday of a stroke at Meadowcrest Hospital. He was 75. Mr. Chatman was a lifelong resident of Algiers. He attended L.B. Landry High School and was a former employee of Todd's Shipyard. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was an usher at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church and a member of Ladies Perseverance Benevolent Association . Survivors include four sons, Donald, Gerard and Stanley Chatman and Clifton Chatman III; five daughters, Pamela L. Bell of Virginia Beach, Gloria C. Henderson, Meranda S. Lamb, Shelanda S. Gray and Shawn S. Henry; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, 1737 Whitney Ave., Algiers. Ethel Holderith Nungesser, a homemaker, died Sunday at Poydras Home. She was 100. Ms. Nungesser was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a member of Jackson Avenue Evangelical Congregation. She was past president of The Protestant Home for Children, a member of the King's Daughters and Sons, a charter and life member of The Daughters of the Nile and a member of Eastern Star, and she was captain of the Krewe of Noblads for many years. Survivors include a son, J. Chris Nungesser II; a daughter, Christhel Nungesser Johnson of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Dorothy M. Baird, a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service, died Saturday at East Jefferson General Hospital. She was 79. Mrs. Baird was born in Chicago and lived in Metairie for the past 49 years. She served as an aviation machinist in the Navy during World War II. She formerly worked for Bell Telephone and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Survivors include two sons, Dean and Carl Baird; two daughters, Portia King and Victoria Baird; a sister, Ruth Dinwidie; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 7 p.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Sonya Ann Gill died Sunday of undetermined causes at her home. She was 36. Ms. Gill was born in Oakland, Calif., and lived in New Orleans. She graduated from O. Shelley Patrice Baham, a credit accountant specialist, died Friday of complications from cancer at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She was 29. Ms. Baham was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School and Southern University at New Orleans, and she attended the University of New Orleans. She formerly worked for Sears and as a New Orleans Recreation Department lifeguard. She was president of the Ladies of the Millennium Social and Pleasure Club. Survivors include her father, Andrew Hillary Baham Jr.; her mother, Patricia Dean Baham; a brother, Andrew Hillary Baham III; a sister, Andree Baham-Johnson; and her grandparents, Andrew Hillary Baham Sr. and Gladys Dupree Baham. J. Leo Weisgerber, a retired merchant mariner and marine surveyor, died Thursday at his home. He was 77. Mr. Weisgerber was born in Kerman, Calif. He lived in Metairie and New Orleans for the past 50 years. He was a graduate of several U.S. Maritime Service engineering schools. He was a chief engineer at Lykes Brothers Steamship Co. He was co-founder of Bachrach and Wood Associates, where he trained marine surveyors. After retiring in 1994, he continued working as a marine consultant. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Marine Club, Mariners Club, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Mark Twain Club, and the National Association of Marine Surveyors. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. He also served in the Navy Reserve. Survivors include his wife, Veronica Mary Stobie Weisgerber; a son, John Weisgerber of Benton; a brother, Clarence Weisgerber of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Ida Weisgerber Murchison of Sacramento; and two grandchildren. He was a former employee of Celotex and a member of International Longshoremen Association Local Union 1419, now Local 3000. Survivors include two sons, Irvin A. Mr. Sanders was born in Jackson, Miss., and lived in Fairfield, Miss., for the past 25 years. He was a Marine Corps veteran. He received a Purple Heart. Survivors include his companion, Lisa Johnson; four sons, Norbert Sanders of New Orleans, Joseph Sanders Jr. of Fairfield, Troy Sanders of Jackson and Jerome Carter of Los Angeles; three daughters, Nichelle Sanders of Fairfield, Dorothy Sanders Smith of Los Angeles and Rita Mae Sanders of New Orleans; two brothers, George Mitchell and Derrick Sanders of Jackson; two sisters, Loretta Sanders Cruiz and Trina Sanders Collins, both of Jackson; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
