John A. Rome, a service foreman for Fire Apparatus Specialist Inc., died Wednesday of cancer at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 53. Mr. Rome was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 30 years. He was an active volunteer firefighter with the Third District and Kenner volunteer departments. He was a member of the Louisiana State Fireman's Association, Fire Chief's Association, International Association for Fire Chiefs, Jefferson Parish Fire Instructors Association and the Knights of Columbus. He was a Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Tierney Rome; two sons, Brandon John and Ryan David Rome; a daughter, Stacy Laine Rome; four brothers, Larry "Whip" Laurie, Donald Haag, Jimmy Haag and Joe Laurie Jr.; a sister, Frances Laurie Lewis; and two grandchildren. A Mass will be said Friday at 1 p.m. at the Kenner Funeral Home of L.A. Muhleisen and Son, 2607 Williams Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.

Ruth Shields Smith, a retired teacher at Isidore Newman School, died Saturday at Pontchartrain Guest House in Mandeville. She was 95. Miss Smith was born in Brandon, Miss., and lived in New Orleans most of her life. She was a graduate of Belhaven College and received a master's degree from Tulane University. She was an active member of St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Smith Birtel; a sister, Margaret Virginia Shields, two grandchildren; and a great grandchild. A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1545 State St. Bultman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Albertine S. Perique, a homemaker, died Monday at Meadowcrest Hospital. She was 78. Mrs. Perique was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include seven sons, Walter Umrani and George, Raymond, Jerry, Steve, Vincent and Kent Perique; seven daughters, Alma Harris, Jannie Robinson, Harriett Singleton, Kay Lloyd, China Hills, Albertine Smothers and Zina Mullin; a brother, Jack Shelby; a sister, Lucille Hollis; and 44 grandchildren. A funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Gaskin-Southall Gordon and Gordon, 1225 N. Rampart St. Visitation will begin at noon. Burial will be in Green Street cemetery.

Ernest E. "Buck" Savarese Jr., owner of Buck's Sinclair Service Station, died Monday of congestive heart failure at Memorial Medical Center. He was 73. Mr. Savarese was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 50 years. He was a founding member of the Almost Uptown Marching Club. Survivors include his wife, Anna Durr Savarese; a son, Ernest E. "Bucky" Savarese III; a daughter, Lana Savarese Phillips; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Thursday at noon at L.A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home, 2929 Metairie Road in Metairie. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories.

David K. Metzger, a Latin America cataloger for Tulane Hospital's Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, died Thursday of a heart attack at his residence. He was 51. Mr. Metzger was born in Winchester, Ind., lived in Muncie, Tenn., and in New Orleans for 16 years. He graduated from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, with a political science degree and a master's of library science. He earned an M.A. and an A.B.D. in Latin American studies at Tulane University. From 1991 to 1994, he was a research assistant to Dr. Richard E. Greenleaf, France V. Scholes Chair in Colonial Latin American History. Survivors include his companion, Olga T. Zenowich; a brother; Dennis D. Metzger of Juno Beach, Fla.; and a sister, Connie D. Booth of Middleburg, Fla. A private service will be held. L. A. Muhleisen and Son is in charge of arrangements.

Cornelius Alonzo Youngblood, a laborer, died Sunday of congestive heart failure at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. He was 52. Mr. Youngblood was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Patrick "Mr. Pat" Joseph McMahon Jr., retired executive representative for Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, died Tuesday at Sunrise Assisted Living Center in New Orleans. He was 81. Mr. McMahon was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from Warren Easton High School and attended Tulane University and La Salle Extension College. He was a Navy and Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He joined his father's business and became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1941. He served for 23 years as assistant manager of McMahon-Coburn Funeral Home; as president of McMahon-Coburn Life Insurance Co.; for eight years as general manager and director of operations of Lamana-Panno-Fallo Funeral Home; and for almost two decades as funeral director and arranger at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home and All Faiths Funeral Home. He was past president of the Louisiana Insurers Conference and the Kiwanis Club of the Third District. He was a member of the board of directors of the Fireman's Charitable and Benevolent Association and former member of the board of directors for Commercial Bank and Trust Co. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Lyons Post and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a member of the Krewe of Alhambra. He was chosen an outstanding employee of Stewart Enterprises in 1988. He was recognized in 1999 by the New Orleans Funeral Directors Association for his 55 years as a licensed funeral director and for his contributions to the community. He was a parishioner of St. Dominic's Catholic Church, where he was an usher for many years. Survivors include his wife, Betty McMahon; a son, Pat McMahon, three daughters, Maureen Sickinger, Marilyn Meyer of Tampa, Fla., and Lisa Ellard of Baton Rouge; a brother, Robert "Bob" McMahon; a sister, Louise M. Robinson; and eight grandchildren. A Mass will be said Friday at 1 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard. Elnora A. Stewart, a retired dietitian at Charity Hospital, died Thursday of lung cancer at her home. She was 69. Mrs. Stewart was born in Innis and lived in New Orleans for the past 49 years. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church and a volunteer at Kingsley House. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Pendarvis Sr.; three sons, Robert Stewart, Ralph and Lawrence Pendarvis Jr.; and four grandchildren. Baldassere "Sasa" Gioe, a retired cook for Rocky & Carlo Restaurant and Bar in Chalmette, died Monday at Chalmette Medical Center. He was 85. Mr. Gioe was born in Violet. When he was 5, his family moved to Italy, where he remained until 1962 before returning to Chalmette, where he lived for the past 40 years. He was a past employee of the St. Bernard Parish Police Jury and worked in the family-owned Rocky & Carlo Restaurant & Bar for more than 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Liboria Gioe; a son, Gasper Gioe; a daughter, Giuseppa "Josie" DiCristina; two brothers, Bernardo and Giuseppe Gioe; two sisters, Anna Tommaseo and Maria Greco; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral will be today at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 2320 Paris Road in Chalmette. Anne H. Phillips, a homemaker, died Saturday at Touro Infirmary. She was 76. Mrs. Philips was born in Nashville and lived in Milledgeville, Ga., and in New Orleans at St. Anna's Residence for the past eight years. She was a member of First Methodist Church of Milledgeville and served on its Wesley Foundation Board, and she was a volunteer at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville. Survivors include three daughters, Dr. Marsha L. Philips of Metairie, Pamela Philips Fyfe and Rosemary Philips Ramage; a brother, Bill Heath; a sister, Betsy Hagan; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Donald "Prune" Frank Flores, a retired employee of AT&T;, died Saturday of mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer, at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 68. Mr. Flores was born in New Orleans and lived in River Ridge for 38 years. He graduated from Holy Cross High School and served as a corporal in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Rose Ann Schillage Flores; four sons, Greg, Brian, Mark and Donald Flores Jr.; a daughter, Susan Flores Hamilton; a brother, Frank Dennis Flores Jr.; and six grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew the Apostle, 10021 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge. Mrs. Dauzat was born in Provencal and lived in Waggaman for the past 24 years. She was a graduate of Provencal High School. Mrs. Dauzat was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
