STICH, MARGERY
11/22/2002
Margery Stich, civic leader, volunteer
Margery Stich, a lifelong volunteer who took her calling to a higher level by leading a City Hall office of volunteers and teaching a college course on the subject, died Wednesday of complications from pneumonia at Touro Infirmary. She was 87.
"She believed in volunteerism so strongly, and that was always her mission," said Patricia Graver, her daughter. "Besides being a volunteer, she was also a leader. She liked to be at the helm."
Although she achieved some prominence by serving as citywide and regional president of the National Council of Jewish Women in the 1950s and 1960s, Mrs. Stich's community profile rose in 1968, when she started the Answer Desk in the City Hall lobby and staffed it with volunteers trained to answer questions.
In 1973, she launched Volunteers in Government of Responsibility, better known as VIGOR, a program where volunteers filled gaps in city services for no pay. Within a few years, she amassed 1,100 volunteers and 220 tasks from which they could choose.
"I think she had an abiding sensitivity for human need, and she was quick to recognize when there was a gap in meeting those needs," said Norma Freiberg, a longtime friend who was her Answer Desk assistant and successor.
"She was dogged and determined in everything she undertook," Freiberg said. "As far as I know, she never undertook anything that she didn't finish with panache."
Mrs. Stich also was a mentor, with an eye for identifying young people who she thought might have a talent for public service, Freiberg said.
"These were people she met along the way who she felt might be like-minded and needed a little push," she said.
To help groom successors and interest others in volunteering, Mrs. Stich developed the curricula for three Tulane University courses.
A Chicago native, Mrs. Stich attended Bradford Junior College and the University of Chicago. Because she was nearly 6 feet tall and wore clothes well, she was a model in her hometown and in New Orleans, where she lived since her marriage in 1939. During World War II, Mrs. Stich was one of two models in a newspaper picture with visiting swashbuckling actor Errol Flynn.
Mrs. Stich was a former president of the Contemporary Arts Center; a former co-chairwoman of the Clean City Committee; a former vice president of the Jewish Community Center; a former volunteer director of the Louisiana Women's Job Corps; a former board member of the city Welfare Department and the Parks and Parkway Commission; a former chairwoman of the committee to establish McKinney House, a halfway house for men with mental illnesses; and a member of the national boards of the National Council of Jewish Women, the National Center for Voluntary Action, the National Association for Mental Health and Brandeis University's National Women's Committee.
In addition to her daughter, survivors include a son, Charles Stich of Chestnut Hill, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Metairie cemetery. Bultman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
