Ethel Cecile Lawrence Washington, a homemaker, died Saturday of undetermined causes at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital. She was 69. Ms. Washington was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from Joseph S. Clark High School. Survivors include three sons, Harrell, Anthony and Calvin Washington; two daughters, Gilda M. Hains and Shelia C. Washington Brown; a brother, Chester Lawrence; three sisters, Yvonne Stewart, Rose Herbert and Florence Lacey; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren. A Mass will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. at Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, 3501 N. Miro St. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. D.W. Carolyn Marie Turner, a homemaker, died Saturday of undetermined causes at her home. She was 52. Ms. Turner was a lifelong resident of New Orleans and attended Booker T. Washington High School. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Survivors include a son, Sean M. Turner; a daughter, Akia K. Turner; and two sisters, Janice Jackson and Yolanda T. Gaunichaux. Richard E. Ellis died Tuesday of cancer at Hammond Nursing Home. He was 48. Mr. Ellis was born in New Orleans and lived in Marrero for many years. He attended Holy Rosary Boarding School. Survivors include a brother, Rudy Ellis, and a sister, Cynthia Kelly. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 1020 Virgil St., Gretna. Evida DeFelice Kilgen, a retired teacher in Lafourche Parish, died Sunday at her home. She was 91. Ms. Kilgen was a lifelong resident of Cut Off. She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a member of the Ladies Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and the Cut Off chapter of Lafourche Family and Community Education. Survivors include two sons, Ronald and Kirk Kilgen; two daughters, Barbara K. Chaisson and Kathleen Kilgen; a brother, Savare DeFelice; two sisters, Thelma DeFelice Lewis and Daisy DeFelice Duvigneaud; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Julia Recasner Thomas, a homemaker, died Nov. 19 of heart failure at University Hospital. She was 86. Mrs. Thomas was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a parishioner of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. Survivors include three sons, Freddie, Oscar and Eugene A. Thomas Jr.; a sister, Louise Phillips Thomas; 18 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and 33 great-great-grandchildren. Claude Joseph Dubret Sr., a retired firefighter with the New Orleans Fire Department, died Tuesday at his home. He was 80. Mr. Dubret was born in St. Bernard Parish and lived in Meraux for the past 30 years. He served in the National Guard and then as a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Survivors include his wife, Esther DiFranco Dubret; a son, Claude J. Dubret Jr.; two daughters, Claudia Dubret and Rose Marie Francke; a sister, Emily Miceli; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held Saturday at noon at St. Bernard Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette. Visitation will be today from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Lt. Col. Mary Margaret Kennedy, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army and registered nurse, died Thursday at her home. She was 86. Lt. Col. Kennedy was born in Gulfport, Miss., and lived in Metairie. She attended St. Francis High School in Alexandria and Mabin Business College in New Orleans. She graduated from St. Joseph's Infirmary in Houston. She attended Louisiana State University in New Orleans for two years. She was enlisted in the Army Air Force Nurses Corps and volunteered for duty abroad in 1943. She served in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. She received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars, the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. She was one of the few women to serve behind enemy lines. After World War II, she served in the Army Reserve for 30 years. She was a floor nurse, intensive care unit nurse and ward supervisor for Veterans Administration Hospital in New Orleans from 1946 to 1976. She was a Eucharistic minister, church office volunteer and a member of the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and Keen Agers for Our Lady of Divine Providence Church. She also was a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society and Christian Life Community. She was part of the team from Associated Catholic Church Charities that initiated the first adult day care center. She participated in dedication ceremonies for the Women in Military Memorial in Arlington National cemetery in Washington, D.C., and the opening ceremonies for The National D-Day Museum in New Orleans. She was a member of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States, American Legion Post No. 114, the Ladies Leukemia League, the Rose Petals Homemakers Club, a charter member of the Women in Military Service For America Memorial Foundation and past president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter No. 1459. Survivors include nieces and nephews. A Mass will be said Monday at noon at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories.

Ezra Simmons, a retired valet, died Tuesday of a stroke at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital. He was 71. Mr. Simmons was born in Heidelburg, Miss., and lived in New Orleans for the past 49 years. He attended Shady Grove High School. He was a past employee at City Hall, where he worked as a parking attendant, and Bick Service Station. Survivors include a companion, Bernadine Duman; a daughter, Rosemary Simmons; his mother, Sallie Mae Simmons Cooley; and six sisters, Bernice Jones of Chicago, Kathy Lee Simmons of Heidelburg, Miss., Jessie McCarty, Adra Forter, Corrine McGill and Winnie Perkins. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Heidelburg. Warrior Jessie "Wa Wa" Davis, a student at Fannie Lou Hamer charter school, died Friday of gunshot wounds in the 2400 block of Thalia Street. He was 15. Mr. Davis was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a member of the Original Morning Star Baptist Church. Survivors include his companion, Lionisha Dorthey; his father, Jessie Mimitte; his mother, Sylvania Gloria Davis; his grandfather, Allen Davis Sr.; four brothers, Jermaine Lavell, Joseph Anthony, Darrell Tyrone and Joshua Allen Davis; and a sister, Gloria Commoniche Davis. Edna B. Geisinger, a retired mechanical engineer at BellSouth, died Wednesday of congestive heart failure at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She was 69. Mrs. Geisinger was born in New Orleans, and lived in Abita Springs for 10 years and in Waldheim for the past seven years. She was a graduate of Sophie Wright High School and attended Louisiana Technical College. She was a former president of the St. Tammany Parish Hospital Guild. Survivors include her husband, Joseph O. Geisinger; a son, Charles Joseph Geisinger; a daughter, Joey Elizabeth Hoveh; and a sister, Lorraine Rheams.
