Carroll Joseph Serpas Sr., a retired accountant with Gulf Federal Savings and Loan, died Monday of complications from cancer at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 68. Mr. Serpas was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 42 years. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and attended Tulane University and Soulé Business College. He was a parishioner of St. Philip Neri Church, where he served as an usher and a Eucharistic minister. He was an Army veteran. He was a former teller at the National Bank of Commerce and manager of Public Storage. He was a special agent for the State Police in 1967, an honorary captain for the New Orleans Police Department, a Jefferson Parish constable, president in 1959 of the New Orleans Fraternal Order of Police, Crescent City Lodge No. 2, and a colonel on Gov. David Treen's staff in 1981, and was appointed honorary secretary of the state in 1984. Mr. Serpas was a past president of the Louisiana Chapter of Controllers and Financial Officers of Saving Institutions, a former treasurer of the Southern District Conference of Controllers and Financial Officers, and a member of the National Committee for Operations, Systems and Procedures for Savings Associations. He was a member of the Italian Open, the American Red Cross, the Civic Association of Jefferson, the Airline Lions Club, the St. Aloysius Alumni Association, the Touchdown Club and the Krewe of Argus. Survivors include his wife, Dolores Brue Serpas; a son, Carroll J. Serpas Jr.; a daughter, Dolores Mary "Dee Dee" Brue Serpas Albarado; two brothers, James and Albert Serpas; a sister, Claire Bonee; and four grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 6500 Kawanee Ave., Metairie. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Mausoleum.

Ann Frisard Richard, a professional calligrapher, died Friday of cancer at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She was 62. Ms. Richard was born in New Orleans and lived in Covington for the past eight years. She was a retired supervisor of the prayer office at the Cenacle Retreat House. She received the Order of St. Louis Medallion from the Archdiocese of New Orleans for outstanding charitable work. Survivors include three sons, Joseph W., Paul and John Richard; a daughter, Beverly Richard Baruso; a brother, Earl J. Frisard Sr.; a sister, Beverly F. Blocker; and six grandchildren. A prayer service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Schoen Funeral Home, 1414 S. Tyler St. Visitation will begin at noon. Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Greenwood cemetery.

Wayne A. Abney, a stand-up comedian, died Saturday of respiratory insufficiency at Tulane Medical Center. He was 22. Mr. Abney was a lifelong resident of Slidell. He graduated from Slidell High School. He was an ambassador of Easter Seals and a recipient of the Young Hero's Award in 1997. He was an actor in plays for YATS, Slidell Little Theater and Slidell High School. He also was a co-founder of Sick Kids Need Involved People. Survivors include his father, Gary W. Abney; his mother, Judy Shultz Abney; a brother, Mark C. Abney; and his grandparents, Lillian C. Abney, Otto R. Shultz and Evelyn P. Shultz. A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 to 10 p.m. and Thursday beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery.

Patricia Ann "Pat" Williams, a waitress at Anita's Grill Restaurant, died Saturday of complications from a stroke at Tulane Medical Center. She was 48. Ms. Williams was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She attended Warren Easton High School and Delgado Community College. She was a member of the Apostolic Outreach Center. Survivors include her companion, Peter Lanaux Sr.; two daughters, Latasha Nasheed and Tiffany Williams; two brothers, Clement and Cephas Williams; four sisters, Gayle and Dale Parker, Robin Allen and Nina Theard; and two grandchildren. John Theodore Grove Jr., a retired client liaison for Louisiana State University Medical Center, died Tuesday of cancer at his home. He was 72. Mr. Grove was born in Lafayette, Ind., and lived in Arabi for the past 27 years. He was a former supervisor of motor boat registration with Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries and had worked at Ed Smith Stencil Works. Survivors include his companion, Kenneth A. Robert D. Meyers, a retired attorney, died Wednesday of complications from cancer. He was 68. Mr. Meyers was born in New Orleans and lived in New Iberia for the past 21 years. He attended St. Aloysius High School, Southwestern Louisiana Institute and Loyola University, where he received his law degree. He was a veteran of the Air Force. Ryan Anthony Robin Sr., a commercial crab fisherman, drowned Thursday in the Barataria Waterway. He was 37. Mr. Robin was born in Marrero and lived in Lafitte for the past 23 years. Eugene Louis Smith, a mail handler, died Saturday of Lou Gehrig's disease at his home. He was 35. Mr. Smith was born in New Orleans and lived in Pensacola, Fla., for the past 10 years. Bob Joe Warren Jr., a dietary manager and consultant at Eastlake Hospital, died Sept. 20 of multiple organ failure at Charity Hospital. He was 46. Mr. Warren was born in Falfurrias, Texas, and lived in New Orleans for the past 25 years. He was an Air Force veteran and a former employee of the Plant Gallery. Herbert H. Smith, a retired bread salesman, died Thursday at Lifecare Hospital of Chalmette. He was 81. Mr. Smith was born in Collinswood, Tenn., and lived in Chalmette for the past 45 years. B. Herbert Manning Jr., former assistant attorney general of Louisiana and associate regional counsel for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, died Friday of congestive heart failure at his home in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 88. Mr. Manning was born in Yoakum, Texas, and lived in Washington, Baton Rouge and Fort Worth. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington and received an LL.D. from Catholic University of America. He received his law degree from Georgetown University and did postgraduate work at Georgetown, Southern Methodist and Texas Christian universities. He was a member of the Texas state bar, District of Columbia bar, Federal Bar Association, National Association of Housing Redevelopment, Official Texas Housing Association, Louisiana Housing Council and the Oklahoma Housing Council. He was a past chairman of the Amvets Subcommittee. He served as diocesan adviser for numerous retirement facilities. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was in the first wave in the landing at Okinawa. He served as Texas state commander of American Veterans of World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Jean Manning Snelus; a brother, Don Manning; six sisters, Evelyn Beck, Wilma Pannell, Ad York, Doris Ashour, Margaret Kalmbacher and Pat Bilardi; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 10 a.m. at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 3717 Stadium Drive in Fort Worth. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Survivors include two sons, Bartholomew and Matthew Fitzgerald; a brother, John Woods; and six grandchildren.
