John Alexander Schoener, an associate employee of Sam's Club, died Thursday of cancer at West Jefferson Medical Center. He was 38. Mr. Schoener was a lifelong resident of Marrero. Survivors include his wife, Lisa Albarado Schoener; a daughter, Haven Rosalie Schoener; two brothers, Robert and Richard Schoener; and a sister, Janet Krost. A Mass will be said Monday at 1 p.m. at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 West Bank Expressway, Harvey. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Gretna.

Shirley Loup Hogan, a homemaker, died Tuesday of cancer at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 61. Mrs. Hogan was a lifelong resident of Westwego. She was a member of Westwego Civic Association. Survivors include her husband, Gilbert Hogan; three sons, Louis Lee Sr., Ricky Lee Sr. and Carl A. Lee; a daughter, Connie Lee Blanchard; a stepson, Kevin Hogan; two stepdaughters, Charlene Guidry and Wendy Romano; her mother, Lucille Boudreaux Loup; two sisters, Rose Vegas and Catherine Loup; 21 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Gospel matriarch Rosa Lee Smooth, 65
Rosa Lee Deflanders Smooth, matriarch of the Dynamic Smooth Family gospel group who was known as Slidell's "first lady of gospel," died Sunday of undetermined causes at Slidell Memorial Hospital. She was 65.
Mrs. Smooth began singing at age 8 at Macedonia Baptist Church north of Slidell, where her father, the Rev. E.L. Deflanders, was minister. After a rousing rendition of "If Your Heart Is Lost In Sin," she recalled in a 1996 interview, supportive members of the congregation tossed coins at her feet, and as she bent down to pick them up, her father told her, "Keep on singing, child."
That she did, throughout her life. In 1975, she gathered family members and formed the gospel group at the suggestion of her daughter Laura, who was 10 years old at the time. The Dynamic Smooth Family went on to perform at festivals and gospel shows throughout the Gulf South and became a fixture at the N.O. Jazz and Heritage Festival Gospel Tent.
The group returned to Macedonia Baptist Church for an anniversary service every year.
Mrs. Smooth was a lifelong resident of Slidell. She was a lifelong member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where she was coordinator for the Pastor's Aide Club, senior choir director, a Sunday school mission teacher and a member of the Mother's Board.
Survivors include three sons, Wilbert Smooth Jr., Donald Smooth Sr. and Glenn Miller; two daughters, Cynthia Plummer and Laura Francis; one brother, Deacon Edward Deflanders; two sisters, Marguerite Parker and Juanita Dulaney; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 60138 Bryan Road, Slidell. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in True Friend cemetery. Doyle's Funeral Home, 2430 Fourth St., Slidell, is in charge of arrangements.

Michael J. Spicuzza, a retired assistant plant manager for the Coca Cola Bottling Co., died Friday at Chalmette Medical Center. He was 86. Mr. Spicuzza was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, Olga Menard Spicuzza; three sons, David, Alvin and Luke Spicuzza; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Monday at 9 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be today from 6 to 10 p.m. and Monday beginning at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie cemetery.

Alfred Adler, a retired supervisor at Wembley Tie Co., died Thursday at his nephew's home in Thibodaux. He was 79. Mr. Adler was born in Kunzelsau, Germany, and lived in New Orleans for the past 66 years. He was a graduate of Alcee Fortier High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the China-Burma-India Theater, and was a former member of American Legion Post No. 304. Survivors include his companion, Francis Dees, and a sister, Ruth Sandlin of Lake Charles. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 4127 S. Claiborne Ave. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Louis cemetery No. 3.

Freddie Davis Smith Sr., a chef, died Thursday of cancer at his home. He was 60. Mr. Smith was born in New Roads and lived in New Orleans for many years. He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School. He had worked at Ye Olde College Inn for more than 30 years and was a taxi driver for more than 30 years with White Fleet and Yellow Cab. He was a member of Prince Hall Masonic Temple and Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Alice Bissant Smith; five sons, Freddie Smith Jr. of St. Paul, Minn., John Smith of Pontiac, Mich., and Stephen, Brian and Barry Smith; two daughters, Charisse Smith and Cathy Veal; five brothers, Walter Smith Jr. and Tyrone and Raymond Smith, all of Baton Rouge, Robert Smith of New Roads and Anthony Smith of Rowlett, Texas; three sisters, Clara Smith and Geraldine Turner of New Roads and Sharon Warr of Jarreau; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Brian "Zahav" Robichaux, a self-employed carpenter and music professional, died Thursday of an aneurysm at Memorial Medical Center. He was 48. Mr. Robichaux was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from Gateway High School and attended Delgado Community College. He was an employee of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Foundation, Festival Productions Inc. and the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp. Survivors include his wife, Shela Robichaux; three sons, Chad B. and Joshua "Yehoshua" Robichaux and Brandon C. Mock; three daughters, Maresa "Nicia" Robichaux, Tiffany E. Dockins and Candice L. Prevot; five brothers, Wayne, Darryl, Keith, Noel and Morris Robichaux Jr.; three sisters, Cheryl, Rhonda and Karen Robichaux; and five grandchildren. Essie Ficklin Smilingis, a homemaker, died Monday at IHS Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Slidell. She was 91. Mrs. Smilingis was born in Livingston Parish and lived in New Orleans for many years and in Lacombe for more than 20 years. She was a parishioner of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Lacombe.
