Charles Frederich Hirling Sr., a retired employee of the Port of New Orleans, died Thursday of Alzheimer's disease at Chateau Living Center. He was 90. Mr. Hirling was born in New Orleans and lived in Kenner for the past 81 years. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Robinson Hirling; a son, Charles Frederich Hirling Jr.; a daughter, Kathleen Hirling O'Neil; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass will be said Monday at noon at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Vincent de Paul No. 2 cemetery.

Marshall Morris, an entertainer and owner of SSJ Records of Hollywood, died Aug. 17 of a heart attack at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 68. Mr. Morris was born in New Orleans and lived in Los Angeles. He was a producer and writer for 40 years and recorded "Tonight We Will Get Married." He worked at Imperial Records in New Orleans. He also worked with and recorded a husband and wife team called Sugar and Sweet. He was a member of BMI and ASCAP. Survivors include his wife, Cocette Landry Morris, and three brothers, Irvin Louis of New Orleans, Charles Riels of Chicago and Lawrence Riels of California. A funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Littlejohn's Funeral Home, 2163 Aubry St. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Holt cemetery.

Beatrice Garrett Hence, a homemaker, died Saturday at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Franklinton. She was 83. Mrs. Hence was a lifelong resident of Franklinton. Survivors include a son, Eddie Daniel Garrett of New Orleans; a daughter, Ora Bell Monday; two stepsons, Roy B. Garrett of Benton Harbor, Mich., and Edward Brock of Lafayette; an adopted brother, Gerald Lynn Tate of New Orleans; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. A funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sweet Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Franklinton. Visitation will be Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., with a wake from 6 to 8 p.m., at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton. Burial will be in Sweet Rest Memorial Park.

Louis Clifton "Bubba Dune" Jones, a pool installer foreman for Dawn's Pool Co., died Friday of undetermined causes at his home. He was 58. Mr. Jones was born in St. Joe and was a lifelong resident of Lacombe. He was a graduate of St. Tammany High School and attended Grambling State University. Mr. Jones was a member of Light of the World Church of God in Christ. Survivors include his wife, Aleria Babineaux Jones; a daughter, Crystal W. Jones; four sons, Terrence, Tyrone, Kelcey and Gabriel Jones; four brothers, Frederick, Carmen, Tommy Lee and Frankie Jones; and three sisters, Theresa Butler, Bernadine Atlow and Carmen Jones. A funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Doyle's Funeral Home, 2430 Fourth St., Slidell. Burial will be in St. Joe cemetery.

Charlena Maxine McKenzie, a nurse at LaFon Nursing Home, died Sept. 21 of a heart attack at her home. She was 56. Ms. McKenzie was born in Cleveland and lived in Berea, Ohio, before moving to New Orleans 15 years ago. She graduated from Berea High School, attended the Jane Adams School of Nursing in Cleveland and received an associate's degree in nursing from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland. She formerly worked at various Cleveland hospitals, The Justice Center's Psychiatric Unit of the county jail and the Cleveland Treatment Center and Methadone Clinic. Survivors include a son, Victor McKenzie; five brothers, Kenneth Jackson of Columbus, Ohio, Raymond Jackson of Hampton, Va., Luther L. Jackson Jr. of Berea, Grady Jackson of Bismark, N.D., and Donnie Jackson of Richmond Heights, Ohio; and three sisters, Rose Mary Carlson of Jacksonville, Fla., Terri Johnson of Berea and Jacklin Vannoy of Cleveland. A funeral will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 206 Front St., Berea. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Woodvale cemetery in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.

Philip Emery O'Neill Sr., a retired sales engineer with Elliott Co., died Saturday of esophageal cancer at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 66. Mr. O'Neill was born in Philadelphia and lived in Metairie for many years. He was a graduate of St. Joseph's Preparatory School and Villanova University in Philadelphia. He was a member of the Flea Club and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and was a lecturer at the Gulf South Compression Conference. Survivors include his wife, Mary Rose Gallagher O'Neill; two sons, Philip Emery O'Neill Jr. and John Daniel O'Neill; two daughters, Carol von Mende and Rosie Payne; two brothers, David Carey and Paul David O'Neill; and two grandchildren. A Mass will be said Friday at 1 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie cemetery.

Theresa Rice Love, English professor
Theresa Rice Love, a retired professor of English, died Thursday at her home. She was 81.
Dr. Love was born in Baton Rouge and lived in New Orleans for the past four years.
She graduated from Southern University and received a master's degree from the University of Iowa and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin.
She joined the Southern University faculty in 1953 after teaching at Alabama State College and Central State College in Ohio.
While at Southern, Dr. Love was asked by the U.S. government to take on an assignment at the University of Liberia in Monrovia. She taught remedial English and other subjects in Liberia, leading to the establishment of a communications center at the university there.
Also while at Southern, she formed the Baton Rouge chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
She later became a professor at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and taught there until 1995.
Dr. Love was the author of many articles and books, including "Dickens and the Seven Deadly Sins," and had a special interest in English as a second language for African-Americans and the use of black dialect. She wrote and published curriculum materials on this subject.
She was a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Edwardsville.
Survivors include two daughters, Lucy Love of Africa and Juanita Love Thomas; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Dr. Love also was the aunt of Condoleezza Rice, national security adviser to President Bush.
A funeral will be held Friday at noon at First Presbyterian Church of Scotlandville, 1246 Rosenwald Road, Baton Rouge. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Southern Memorial Gardens. Gaskin, Southall, Gordon & Gordon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Ulrich John "Rick" Torrence, a retired chief of finance with the Small Business Administration, died Sunday at his home. He was 75. Mr. Torrence was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a graduate of Redemptorist High School and Louisiana State University. He had worked at the Wheeling Steel Corp. and joined the SBA as a loan officer and served in various positions, including heading disaster offices throughout the state. He had been an officer of the New Orleans Credit Association, president of the Union of Federal Employees and president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a parishioner of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Harahan, where he had been president of the Dad's Club, and was a member of the St. Rita Knights of Columbus Council No. 3854. He was a musician and a founder of the Jefferson Parish Community Band. Survivors include two sons, Ulrich Joseph "Rick" Torrence of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Preston Torrence of Baton Rouge; a daughter, Denise Torrence of Baton Rouge; and six grandchildren. A Mass was said Wednesday at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home. Burial was in All Saints Mausoleum.

Royal Cooks Sr., a vendor with Long Leaf Cigarette Co., died Monday of cancer at Memorial Medical Center. He was 65. Mr. Cooks was born in Labadieville and lived in New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, Hattie Cryer Cooks; three sons, Rodney, Reginald and Royal Cooks Jr.; a daughter, Lovell Taylor; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home, 1610 Lapeyrouse St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be private.

Lori Ann Polk, a homemaker, died Sept. 17 of undetermined causes at Villa Feliciana Medical Complex. She was 38. Miss Polk was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a graduate of Alcee Fortier High School. Survivors include two sons, Chincey and Chapelston Polk; two daughters, Angelica and Angela Polk; her mother, Isola C. Polk; five brothers, Melvin, Elvin, Donald, Clarence Eric and Kenneth Polk; and four sisters, Debra, Joyce, Brenda and Georgia Mae Polk.
