Mathilda Coppola Byrne, a retired co-owner of Emmett's Cleaners, died Sunday of complications from a stroke in Goldendale, Wash. She was 87. Mrs. Byrne was born in Nine Mile Point and lived in Chalmette for 15 years and in New Orleans for the past 37 years. She was a former employee in the deli department at Seidel's Food Store and a former clerk at Barker's Department Store. She was a member of Neighborly Nines Civic and Social Club, American Association of Retired Persons Chapter No. 3385 and Senior Friends Club. Survivors include her companion, Robert Paul; two daughters, Diane B. Alberstadt and Gwendolyn B. Koltun; a sister, Angelina C. Ragusa; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery No. 1.

DUNN, GERTRUDE GRUCH

Gertrude Gruch Dunn, a retired clerk for the Army Corps of Engineers, died Thursday at Memorial Medical Center. She was 90. Mrs. Dunn was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include her husband, Henry B. Dunn; a son, Gerald B. Dunn; a daughter, Jane D. Kolb; two brothers, John L., and George E. Grush; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

GRAY, CHRISTOPHER D.

Christopher D. Gray, a professor at Fiam University in Bangkok, Thailand, died Aug. 24 of undetermined causes in Bangkok. He was 40. Mr. Gray was born in New Orleans, lived in St. Bernard Parish and lived in Bangkok for the past year. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Louisiana State University and a master's degree in hotel and restaurant management from Florida International University. Survivors include his mother, Jeannette Rano Gray; a brother, Wayne A. Gray Sr.; a sister, Donna G. Tortorich; and his grandparents, Domingo and Ethel Rano. A funeral will be held today at 1:15 p.m. at Vickers, Verrette & Dornan Funeral Home, 3027 Jean Lafitte Parkway, Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.

OTILLAR, ANTHONY S.

Anthony S. Otillar, a retired customer service representative for Delta Airlines, died Thursday of a heart attack at his home. He was 73. Mr. Otillar was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 50 years. He was an Air Force veteran. Survivors include a son, Robert A. Otillar; a daughter, Jennie Toepfer; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Burial will be in All Saints Mausoleum.

SMITH, JOSHUA DANIEL
09/04/02

Joshua Daniel Smith, a retired chief chemist and director of research at International Lubricants Corp., died Friday in Mount Pleasant, S.C. He was 85. Mr. Smith was born in Smith County, Miss., lived in New Orleans for many years and moved to Mount Pleasant in 1999. He was commissioned an officer in the Army Reserves in 1940, was a veteran of World War II with the Chemical Warfare Service and retired from the reserves in 1961 as a lieutenant colonel with the 377th Transportation Division. He graduated from Millsaps College at the top of his class with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and earned a master's degree in chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology and a master's of business administration from Louisiana State University. During his career he was awarded numerous patents. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the National Lubricating Grease Institute, a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and a registered chemical engineer. He had served on the board of the Lake Vista Property Owners Association and the Lake Vista Holiday Club. Survivors include his wife, Thais Wild Smith; a son, Eric Ney Smith of New Orleans; a daughter, Cynthia Smith Hernandez; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Visitation will be today from noon to 1 p.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. A committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, 120 City Park Ave.

MASSON, JANET MILLAR
09/17/02

Janet Millar Masson, a retired secretary for Hartson Insurance Agency, died Saturday of congestive heart failure at Baton Rouge General Hospital. She was 73. Mrs. Masson was born in Kilwinning, Scotland, lived in New Orleans for many years and lived in Plaquemine for the past three years. Survivors include a son, Albert Victor Masson Jr.; three daughters, Debra Masson, Susan M. English and Michelle M. McCall; a sister, Marion Millar Cannatella; and four grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories.

COOPER, FLORENCE MARIE W.

Florence Marie W. Cooper, a homemaker, died Friday of undetermined causes at North Oaks Regional Medical Center. She was 71. Mrs. Cooper was born in Monroe and lived in Hammond for the past 35 years. Survivors include two daughters, Ann Cooper Tate and Fran Raiford; a brother, Timothy Williams; two sisters, Anita Harris and Francis Padilla; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held today at 10 a.m. at Willie-Lee Cemetery, Folsom. United Funeral Service is handling arrangements.

HEINTZ, CLAIRE GAUTREAUX

Claire Gautreaux Heintz, a retired teacher, died Aug. 26 at Woldenberg Village. She was 90. Mrs. Heintz was born in Houma and lived in New Orleans. Survivors include her husband, Edward J. Heintz Jr.; two daughters, Lynne Louviere and Suzanne Hillebrand; three brothers, Warren and Leonce Gautreau Jr., and the Rev. F. Gautreaux; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchilden. A private Mass was said. Burial was in Lake Lawn Park Cemetery. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

WOODS, GRACE LIPPS

Grace Lipps Woods, a homemaker, died Friday at Memorial Medical Center. She was 83. Mrs. Woods was born in Reserve and lived in New Orleans for many years. She was a graduate of McDonogh No. 35 High School. Survivors include two daughters, Charlene W. Robins and Laverne W. Bourgeois; two sisters, Leona Washington and Ada Lipps; and four grandchildren. A Mass will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 8321 Burthe St. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m., with recitation of the rosary at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery No. 2. Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roberta Bobb, a homemaker, died Monday at Lakeview Regional Medical Center. She was 78. Ms. Bobb was born in St. Louis, Mo., lived in Belle Chasse for 30 years and lived in Mandeville for the past five years. Survivors include a son, Salvatore Paul Orlando; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 10 a.m. at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington.

TRACY, WILLIAM R. ‘BUBBY' JR.

William R. "Bubby" Tracy Jr., a retired businessman and founder of Jefferson Variety Stores Inc., died Monday from complications of prostate cancer at Memorial Medical Center. He was 78. Mr. Tracy was born in New Orleans and was a lifelong resident of Jefferson. He attended Jefferson High School. He was retired from Texaco Inc. He was a sergeant in the Army and a veteran of World War II, receiving a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a charter member of the Krewe of Amor and a former member of the Knights of Jason. Survivors include a son, William R. "Rusty" Tracy III; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Thursday at noon at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be today from 6 to 10 p.m. and Thursday beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.

BANKS, JARMAIN

Jarmain Banks, a student at Mary Church Terrell Magnet School, died Wednesday of a seizure at University Hospital. He was 9. He was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include his father, James Robinson; his mother, Colette Banks; his stepfather, Derry Gilmore; his twin brother, James Anthony Banks; two sisters, Jamie and Jasmine Banks; and his grandmothers, Marguerite Banks and Wilma Robinson. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gaskin-Southall Gordon & Gordon Mortuary, 1225 N. Rampart St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be private.
