SILAS, DIANNE HALL

Dianne Hall Silas, a homemaker, died Wednesday of cancer at her home. She was 51. Mrs. Silas was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include her husband, George Silas; three sons, Shawn Hammork and Tony and Tommy Williams; three daughters, Calleah Hammork and Latasha and Nayante Hall; a stepson, George Silas Jr.; her mother, Eloise Perkins; four brothers, David, Alton, Reginald and Lionel Hall; four sisters, Brunetta Franklin, Nadine Saberre and Sybil and Lisa Hall; and 10 grandchildren. A funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Greater Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, 3323 First St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. Magee Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JONES, BERT ALLEN

Bert Allen Jones, a welder and concrete finisher, died Monday of cancer at Slidell Guest House. He was 44. Mr. Jones was born in New Orleans and lived in Slidell for the past 15 years. Survivors include two sons, Buford Rader and Bert McDaniel Frazer Jones; his mother, Joan Roberts Jones; a brother, Steven W. Jones; and two sisters, Kim J. Beaulieu of New Orleans and Luria "Lulu" Norman. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace Memorial Baptist Church in Slidell. Honaker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

NICHOLSON, BARBARA JEAN ‘BOBBIE'

Barbara Jean "Bobbie" Nicholson, a homemaker, died Thursday of a heart attack at Tulane Medical Center. She was 58. Mrs. Nicholson was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, where she was a member of the choir. Survivors include a son, Yvonneiscka Stephan Nicholson; a daughter, Bernita Michelle White; a brother, Cleveland Nicholson Jr.; a sister, Gloria Mealey; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6828 Chef Menteur Highway. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BAIN, LEONARD LOUIS

Leonard Louis Bain, a retired salesman, died Wednesday at his home. He was 101. Mr. Bain was born in New York, lived in New Orleans then in Aventura, Fla., for the past 20 years. He was a manager for the Adams Hat Store chain and traveled for Wembley Tie Co. He was a volunteer at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla. He was recognized in Menswear Retailer magazine as a centenarian and for his career contributions. Survivors include his wife, Rickey Lukow Bain; a son, Elliott M. Bain; a daughter, Harriet B. Liroff; a sister, Harriet B. Levinsohn of Miami Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Hebrew Rest III Mausoleum, 2100 Pelopidas St. Burial will be at Hebrew Rest III Mausoleum. Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BROWN, DAVID JR.

David Brown Jr., a construction laborer, died Sunday of undetermined causes at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 53. Mr. Brown was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from George Washington Carver High School. He was a member of Greater Hill of Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Corliss M. Brown; three stepsons, Roderick, Gerald and Corey Flagge; two stepdaughters, LaRhonda and LaShonda Flagge; his father, David Brown Sr.; his mother, Dorothy Jackson; three brothers, William, Leon and Sherman Brown; a sister, Mary Sellers-Davis; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Greater Hill of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 2030 Florida Ave. Visitation will be at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Biloxi National Cemetery. Tilly's Funeral Home handled arrangements.

CONSTANT, HILDA ‘DA' DANOS

Hilda "Da" Danos Constant, a homemaker, died Sunday of cardiac arrest at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 70. Ms. Constant was a lifelong resident of Harvey. Survivors include four sons, David, Michael and Bobby Constant and Raymond P. Constant Jr.; two daughters, Dawn Burdwell and Nancy Hearn; a brother, Kippy Danos; a sister, Shirley Talamo; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass will be said today at 3 p.m. at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 West Bank Expressway, Harvey. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna.

MENENDEZ, LAWRENCE ‘JON-JON'

Lawrence "Jon-Jon" Menendez, a retired longshoreman with Local No. 1419 and a retired deputy with the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's Office, died Aug. 28 of heart failure at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 73. Mr. Menendez was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended Valena C. Jones School. Survivors include his companion, Dorothy King; two sons, Luther and Jeff Menendez; six brothers, Lloyd, Thaddeus, Bryant, Kevin and Shawn Menendez and Louis Menendez Jr.; and two sisters, Marie and Vanessa Menendez. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Charbonnet-Labat Funeral Home, 1615 St. Philip St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

BROWN, JOHN WESLY

John Wesly Brown, a retired supply clerk, died Saturday of cancer at his home. He was 66. Mr. Brown was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Survivors include three sons, Eric D., Deric D. and Dirk C. Brown; a daughter, Pamela A. Brown; a sister, Ramona Bush; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Murray Henderson Funeral Home, 1208 Teche St., Algiers. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be at McDonoghville Cemetery, Gretna.

SHANNON, GEORGE ARVEAL

George Arveal Shannon, former mayor of Pleasant Hill and a retired teacher and principal, died Friday at Sabine Medical Center in Many. He was 85. Mr. Shannon was a lifelong resident of Pleasant Hill. He was a former principal of Carver and Pleasant Hill High Schools. He was a former deputy sheriff in Pleasant Hill. He graduated from Sabine Parish Training School, attended Piney Woods College and graduated from Southern University with a bachelor's degree in business administration and from Bishop College with a master's degree in education plus 30. He was past president of the Peoples State Bank Advisory Board. He was a 33rd Degree Prince Hall Mason and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and was a deacon and treasurer at Elizabeth Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Elvera Ricks Shannon; two sons, Wilkin Ronald and Michael Keith Shannon; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Hill High School Gymnasium. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. Winnfield Funeral Home in Natchitoches is in charge of arrangements.

MARINA, ALVIN JOSEPH ‘P.K.' SANTA

Alvin Joseph "P.K." Santa Marina, a retired self-employed roofer, died Thursday at his home. He was 80. Mr. Santa Marina was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a past parishioner of Epiphany Catholic Church. Survivors include two sons, Wendell and Gregory Santa Marina; two daughters, Lisa Bevrotte and Juanita Daniel; a brother, Leonard Santa Marina; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A private funeral will be held at Charbonnet-Labat Funeral Home. Visitation will be Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

BABIN, HOWARD JOSEPH

Howard Joseph Babin, a retired service repairman for Amerigas Propane Co., died Sunday of a stroke at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital. He was 72. Mr. Babin was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a former employee of Martin Marietta, where he was involved in manufacturing rocket fuel tanks for the space program. He was a drummer for several local dance clubs. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He served in the Navy, assigned to the Sea Bees. Survivors include a son, Michael Buquoi; a brother, Oscar L. Babin Jr.; and a sister, June Babin Francis. A funeral will be held today at noon at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Roch Cemetery No. 2.

ABRAM, ELLA D.
09/14/02

Ella D. Abram, a homemaker, died Monday at Easthaven Nursing Home. She was 93. Mrs. Abram was born in Ama and lived in New Orleans for the past 50 years. Survivors include a son, Edward L. Lewis; a daughter, Ethel Lewis; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp-Laudumiey Funeral Home, 5001 Chef Menteur Hwy. Visitation will begin at noon. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.
