Willie James Cowart, a welder and boilermaker, died Sept. 3 of pancreatic cancer at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 56. Mr. Cowart was born in Goshen, Ala., and lived in New Orleans for the past 30 years. Survivors include two sons, Willie James Cowart Jr. and Derrick J. Cowart; four daughters, Temple L. Draper, Antoinett Rogers and Tonia and Tanay Cowart; three brothers, Jessie, Charles and Albert Cowart; two sisters, Martha and Elizabeth Cowart; and seven grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Main Street Missionary Baptist Church, 231 Main St., Biloxi. Burial was in Biloxi City Cemetery. Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ranulfo Aguilar, a retired regional general manager at Avia Taca airline, died Tuesday at his home. He was 85. Mr. Aguilar was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and lived in Metairie for the past 43 years. Survivors include two sons, Rudy Aguilar and Roy Aguilar Sr.; a daughter, Vilma Ingram; five sisters, Leslia DeLeon, Flor DeHerrera and Marta, Lucy and Connie Aguilar; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.

Ashley LaTonja Smith, a student at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago and an employee of Mirage Men's Wear, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Gonzales of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was 18. Miss Smith was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a graduate of Marion Abramson High School and attended Delgado Community College. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Who's Who Among American Students, and was co-captain of the Diamond Girls. She was a recipient of the Horatio Alger Award, was a Southeast Youth Regional Conference Debutante. Survivors include her parents, Marilyn Richardson Youngblood and Anthony Smith; her stepfathers, Darrie Youngblood and James Warrick Jr.; her stepmother, LaTasha Smith; two brothers, LeVar and Jason Knox; a sister, Jamie Warrick; a stepbrother, James Warrick III; her grandparents, Marilyn H. Richardson and Hilda T. Smith; and her step grandparents, Catherine Warrick and Ethel Youngblood. A funeral will be held today at noon at Greater New St. Luke Baptist Church, 2201 Montegut St. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. D.W. Caldin "Tiny" McElveen, a social service worker, died Monday of lung cancer at Lutheran Nursing Home. He was 51. Mr. McElveen was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include a son, Shawn J. McElveen; his mother, Emma McElveen; three brothers, Thomas McElveen of California, Jack McElveen Jr. and Nicholas McElveen; three sisters, Gwendolyn Smith of Los Angeles, Jacquelyn Brown and Jill Agboola; and three grandchildren. Henry "Harry" L. Hahn, a retired businessman and former high school football coach, died Friday at St. Anthony's Nursing Home. He was 74. Mr. Hahn was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a graduate of Warren Easton High School and Tulane University, where he played football. He was a teacher and football coach at Holy Name of Mary School in Algiers, and he led the team to a state championship in the 1950s. Survivors include two sons, Harry Hahn Jr. and Larry A. Hahn; a daughter, Jeanne Ragas; a sister, Estelle H. Brodtmann; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at noon.

Richard West Jr., a landscaper, died Sept. 1 of undetermined causes at his sister's home. He was 45. Mr. West was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He served in the Army. Iris Beatrice Couvillion, a homemaker, died Friday at her home in Jefferson. She was 77. She was born in Hessmer and lived in Jefferson for 52 years. Survivors include four sons, Daniel H. Joyce Woody, a retired medical transcriptionist with Crescent City Dictation, died Saturday of cancer at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 51. Ms. Woody was a lifelong resident of Marrero. She graduated from Lincoln High School and Strait Business School and attended Xavier University. She was a former employee of Flint Goodrich Hospital, Worldwide Dictation of Los Angeles, Health American and West Jefferson Medical Center. She was a member of St. Mary's Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, new converts teacher and Bible Institute teacher. Survivors include a brother, James Walker Sr.; and three sisters, Lois Varnado, Gail Jones and Gretchen Williams. A funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Baptist Church, 6223 6th Ave., Marrero. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Christian Social Cemetery in Gretna. Jonathan Edgar Lorino, a student at Tulane University, died Monday at Charity Hospital from injuries suffered during a robbery at his home. He was 21. Mr. Lorino was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School. He was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, was named to the Tulane College Dean's List in 2000 and 2001, and was a member of the honors program. He was a winner of the Charles Oscar Maas Prize in French and Italian in 2001. Survivors include his father, Anthony P. Lorino; his mother, Anna Lisa Wright Lorino; a brother, Jason A. Lorino; and his grandmother, Stella Rickoll Lorino. A Mass will be said Friday at noon at St. Ann Church and Shrine, 4920 Loveland St., Metairie. John Pelham Mann, a retired deputy chairman and vice president of United Biscuits Holdings Ltd., died Sunday at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 83. Mr. Mann was born in London and lived in New Orleans for the past two years. He graduated from Eton College and Cambridge University. He was a major in the Army Scots Guards and was awarded the Military Cross and the Bronze Lion of the Netherlands. He was planning and sales manager for Unilever in England from 1946 to 1954, managing director of Unilever in New Zealand from 1954 to 1959, chairman and managing director for Gibbs Pepsodent Co. from 1959 to 1963 and oversaw all acquisitions for United Biscuits Holdings Ltd. as deputy chairman and vice president from 1964 to 1984. He was a former director for Barclays Bank, U.K., and Paxall Inc., and was a board member of British Airways. He was a member of the British North American Council. Survivors include his wife, Isabel Ochsner Mann of New Orleans; two sons, James John Francis Mann and Charles Edward Lionel Mann, both of England; a daughter, Celia Lady Norrie of England; three stepsons, Alton O., Allen P. and Stephen L. Davis; two sisters, Elizabeth Lady Maclean and Margaret Mann Simonds, both of England; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Ave. Burial will be in Garden of Memories. Bultman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph A. Desmarais, a retired Illinois Central Railroad employee, died Wednesday at Chateau Living Center. He was 82.
