LAWRENCE -- Rafael Hernandez, 93, died Wednesday at Holy family Hospital in Methuen.
Mr. Hernandez was born and educated in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico. He retired as a foreman in the tobacco industry. He joined his family in Lawrence in 1998.

He enjoyed watching baseball on television and attending church services.

Widower of Dolores Roman, he leaves sons Pablo Hernandez of Puerto Rico and Edwin Hernandez and his wife, Sonia (Vasquez) Hernandez of New York City; daughters Juana Hernandez of Lawrence, Eva Hernandez and husband Francisco Trinidad of Lawrence; Margarita Hernandez and husband Justo Santana of Lawrence; Nereida Hernandez of Lawrence and Zoraida Hernandez of New York City; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours are today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Farrah Funeral Home, 170 Lawrence Street, Lawrence. A funeral service will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence.

Donald J. Morrissey
Monday, January 20, 2003
LAWRENCE -- Donald J. Morrissey, 84, died yesterday at the Lawrence General Hospital.
He was born in Bridgeport, Conn. and graduated from Lawrence High School.

Mr. Morrissey worked for the state of Massachusetts in the Traffic Division. He served in the Army during World War II and was awarded the African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.

He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 0219 of North Andover. He attended St. Patrick Church in Lawrence. He enjoyed being in the outdoors and was a tomato gardener. He loved to walk and enjoyed good food. He also enjoyed traveling with his late wife Rita, who died in 1997.

Mr. Morrissey leaves daughter Debbie Morrissey of Lawrence; son, Ronald P. and his wife Charlene, of Hudson, N.H.; several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Cataudella Funeral Home 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. A funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in North Andover.

Richard J. Mulcahy
Monday, January 20, 2003
HAVERHILL -- Richard J. Mulcahy, 51, died Friday at home of heart disease.
He was born in Beverly and attended public schools in that city and in Lexington, Ky., before graduating from Haverhill High School in 1969.

Mr. Mulcahy received a bachelor of arts degree in political science in 1973 from Merrimack College in North Andover. At the time of his graduation, he was elected a member of Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges. He was a member of Concerned Students for Social Change where he worked to provide information about the Vietnam War and was active with the anti-nuclear group Clamshell Alliance and Commission.

He was active in Haverhill civic affairs, serving as a member of the Mayor's Cable Television Advisory Committee for three terms. He also initiated the Haverhill Hunger Roundtable to coordinate all city sites feeding the hungry and began the Universalist Unitarian Church's Community Meals Program.

Mr. Mulcahy was director of the Haverhill Public Library's audio-visual department and also worked as oral-visual coordinator for the city of Haverhill. He was media specialist and quality control facilitator for Kollsman Instrument Company in Merrimack, N.H. He also worked in retail management with the Pentucket Shoe Store on Washington Street in Haverhill and, until his death, at Red's Shoe Barn on Plaistow Road in Plaistow, N.H.

Mr. Mulcahy also was a photographer, selling many of his photographs to collectors and display locations.

He leaves his wife Helen R. (Mosby) Mulcahy of Haverhill; daughter Rachel Mulcahy of Haverhill; parents Edward J. and Shirley A (Fitzgerald) Mulcahy of Haverhill; sisters Donna Mulcahy of Haverhill, Jean Au of Lake Oswego, Ore. and Stacia Talberth of Boston; and several aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews and cousins.

Flowers will be welcomed by the family or memorial contributions may be made to the Haverhill Community Meals Program, c/o Universalist-Unitarian Church, 16 Ashland St., Haverhill, MA 01830, or to Haverhill Public Library, 99 Main St., Haverhill, MA 01830.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Haverhill Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Universalist-Unitarian Church, 15 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill.

Etta D. Ratcliffe
Monday, January 20, 2003
METHUEN -- Etta D. (Bachmann) Ratcliffe, 93, died Saturday at the Nevins Nursing Center.
Born in Lawrence, she was educated in the Lawrence Public Schools and attended McIntosh Business School.

Mrs. Ratcliffe owned and operated Etta's Coffee Shop on South Union Street in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She retired in 1975 from the Internal Revenue Service after 15 years. Her volunteer work included Laconia State School in New Hampshire, Mary Immaculate Retirement Home and 25 years at the Holy Family Hospital, where she contributed 9,000 hours in the gift shop and snack bar.

She leaves sons Allyne E. and his wife Shiela of North Andover and Howard I. and his wife June of Staunton, Va.; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be tomorrow from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen. Funeral services will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

Thomas Rivera

HAVERHILL -- Thomas Rivera, 70, died Saturday at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.
Mr. Rivera was born in Puerto Rico and had been a resident of Haverhill for the past 50 years.

He worked at Western Electric Co. in both Haverhill and North Andover for 20 years, at the Water Department for the city of Haverhill and also with Early & Sons, Inc. contractors of Haverhill.

Mr. Rivera attended St. James Church in Haverhill.

He leaves sons John F. Rivera and Joshua Chase, both of Haverhill and Thomas F. Jr. of Puerto Rico; daughter Chichi Moran of New Hampshire; sisters Elba Marcardo of Haverhill and Margurita Rivera of Lawrence; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be tomorrow, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill. Funeral will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. James Church, 185 Winter St., Haverhill. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Primrose Street, Haverhill.

William D. Max
Thursday, September 16, 1999
William D. (Billy) Max, 56, of Salem, N.H., died Thursday, Sept. 9, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Mr. Max was born in Skowhegan, Maine, and was a graduate of Methuen High School and PGA business school at the University of Maryland.

He owned and was head instructor at Billy Max's Golf School in Lawrence from 1975 to 1993. He was the head professional at Colonial Country Club in Lynnfield, Merrimack Golf Club in Methuen, Franklin Country Club in Franklin and Chelmsford Country Club in Chelmsford, where was also the manager. He was assistant head professional at Oakley Country Club in Watertown and a teaching professional at Andover Country Club and Rolling Green Golf Club in Andover.

Mr. Max won the 1981 Pro-Pro NEPGA championship, 1979 NEPGA Match Play championship, 1973 Vermont State Open and 1970 Bucksport (Maine) Open and several low-pro honors in NEPGA pro-ams.

Members of his family include his wife of 29 years, Dianne (Kalil) Max; sons, William G. Max of New Brunswick, N.H., and Christopher D. Max of Canton; brothers, George Max of Methuen and Richard Max of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Marilyn Thompson of Clearwater, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday at First Church Congregational in Methuen. Interment was in St. Anthony Cemetery, also in Methuen.

Arrangements were by Pollard Funeral Home Inc. in Methuen.

James D. Platt Jr.
Thursday, September 16, 1999
James D. "Jidd" Platt Jr., 60, of Hampton, N.H., died Thursday, Sept. 9, at home.

Mr. Platt was born in Lawrence and raised and educated in Andover. He was a graduate of Andover High, where he was a three-letter athlete.

Mr. Platt attended the University of Connecticut on a football scholarship before he served with the U.S. Navy. He then graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston and received a master's degree in education from Salem State College.

Mr. Platt started teaching in the Watts section of Los Angeles, Calif. He was an elementary teacher, guidance counselor and principal of Cole School for a short time during his 30 years with the Boxford school system.

He had been teaching at Spofford Pond School and worked part time in dispatch as a communication specialist for the Hampton Police Department.

The life member of the National Education Association was former negotiator and career member of Massachusetts Teachers Association and a member of Boxford Teachers Association. The former Newburyport resident was a longtime member of the Dalton Club in Newburyport.

He had lived in Hampton since 1988.

Members of his family include his wife of 14 years, Sheila A. (Sciaba) Platt of Hampton; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel T. and Jennifer Platt of Boston; mother, Ruth (O'Connor) Nervi of Santa Rosa, Calif.; stepdaughters, Kendall Daly of Sharon and her husband, Dereck Daly, and Brook Dennen of San Rafael, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was said Monday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Burial was in High Street Cemetery, also in Hampton.

Arrangements were by Remick & Gendron Funeral Home in Hampton.

Mary A. Surette
Thursday, September 16, 1999
Mary A. (Burbine) Surette, 94, of Andover died Friday, Sept. 10, at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mrs. Surette was born in Andover.

She retired from Tyer Rubber Co. in 1965.

Mrs. Surette was a member of St. Augustine Church.

Members of her family include her daughters, Rita Buckley of Salisbury and her husband, Timothy Buckley, Catherine Neville of Orlando, Fla., and Helen Reming of Haverhill and her husband, Edward Reming; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Surette, with whom she lived; sister, Theresa Hurley of Andover; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Surette was the wife of the late Eli Surette and mother of the late Theodore Surette.

A funeral Mass was said Monday at St. Augustine Church. Burial was in St. Augustine Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Burke Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Merrimack Valley Dialysis Center, Saints Memorial Medical Center, 1 Hospital Drive, Lowell, MA 01852.
