Fricka F. Leistikow
Thursday, August 30, 2001
Longtime Andover resident Dr. Fricka F. (Reinisch) Leistikow, 89, formerly of Maple Avenue, died Sunday, Aug. 26 at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.
For years, Dr. Leistikow was a fixture downtown as she was an avid walker who also enjoyed voicing her opinion, especially about politics.
She kept a close eye on Andover's rundown sidewalks and wrote numerous letters to the editors at The Eagle-Tribune.
When she was struck by a car while walking near King's Subs on Bartlet Street several years ago, she was forced to use a walker, but it didn't slow her down. She would use the walker to make her daily trip to the mailbox at the corner of Maple Avenue and Elm Street.
In May, 1999 she made news again when her home was burglarized. The intruder knocked her to the floor and she was stuck on the floor for an hour until help arrived. While her arm and chest were bruised, her determined spirit was not, as she was able to give police a description of the assailant.
Her life spanned the globe. She was born in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, and her family later moved to Vienna, Austria, where she received a classical education in Greek and Latin. She was an avid mountain climber and walker in her youth and throughout adulthood and graduated from the University of Vienna with a doctor of law degree.
A refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria, Dr. Leistikow moved to the United States in 1938 and lived in New York City. Married at the time to an American journalist, James Aronson, during World War II she worked for the newspaper guild. Following the war, she worked for Voice of America at the US State Department.
In the late 1940s, she returned to school and received an advanced degree in remedial reading and psychological testing from Columbia Teacher's College.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Leistikow taught at St. Bernard's School in New York City. She retired in 1974 to Shropshire, England, until her then-husband, Gunner Leistikow's, death.
She returned to live in Andover and was a member of the Andover Senior Center, where she was active as a Friendly Visitor. She was also a member of Christ Church.
An amateur watercolorist during her adulthood, Dr. Leistikow painted a number of scenes from her Maple Avenue neighborhood.
During the last two years, she resided at Heritage of North Andover, where she resumed painting and was voted "most artistic," an honor she very much appreciated.
Members of her family include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary L. (Aronson) and Graydon E. McCormick of North Andover; brother, Wolfgang B. Reinisch of Vienna, Austria and Steinau, Germany; two grandchildren, Kate McCormick of Quincy and Seth McCormick of New York City; and several nephews, grandnephews and a grandniece.
