Harold "Max" Bishop
Thursday, December 13, 2001
Harold P. "Max" Bishop, 79, a lifelong Andover resident, died Monday, Dec. 10 at Lawrence General Hospital.
Mr. Bishop was a treasured member of the local sports community for over 60 years. He was probably best known around Andover for his 40-year career as a local sportswriter at The Eagle-Tribune.
His love of sports was evident back in his Punchard High School days when he was described as a "slick-fielding, power-hitting first baseman," according to Eagle-Tribune writer Michael Muldoon.
He was good enough to be signed by the Boston Red Sox after he got out of the Navy following World War II. He was assigned to the farm team in Oneonta, N.Y.
Eagle-Tribune colleagues said he covered everyone from future president George H.W. Bush playing baseball at Phillips Academy to future national champions like Methuen's Gary McLain who starred in basketball at Villanova University. He enjoyed promoting local athletes and covering hometown sports for the newspaper.
"But he cared just as much, if not more so, about the bench-warmer as the All-American," Muldoon said.
