Robert J. Strauss
Thursday, September 9, 1999
Robert Jacob Strauss, 70, of Greenacres, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 22.

The former Andover resident was a graduate of Lawrence High. He had also lived in Alton Bay, N.H.

Mr. Strauss was vice president of Jo-Gal Shoe.

He was president of Temple Emanuel Brotherhood and commodore of the Coast Guard Auxiliary of the First Coast Guard district.

Members of his family include his wife, Lillian (Froman) Strauss; daughters and sons-in-law, Myrna and Dr. Howard Zetlan of Andover, and Sandra and Mark Gordon of Ellicott City, Md.; son, Frederick Strauss of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 6401 Congress Ave., #265, Boca Raton, FL 33487-2842.

Walter R. Johnson
Thursday, September 2, 1999
Walter R. Johnson, 77, of 50 Holt Road died Thursday, Aug. 26, at Saints Memorial Hospital in Lowell.

Mr. Johnson was born in Medford and graduated from Somerville High School.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.

Mr. Johnson was a machinist at the Boston Naval Shipyard for 32 years before he retired.

He was a former member of Andover Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge in Somerville.

Members of his family include his twin brother, Arthur Johnson of Andover, and his wife, Joyce Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday at Dewhirst and Conte Funeral Home. Burial was in Sandown-Center Cemetery.

Paul Palm Gyrsting
Thursday, September 30, 1999
Paul Palm Gyrsting, 76, of Copenhagen, Denmark, died Aug. 27 at home after a long illness.

Mr. Gyrsting graduated from the Technical University of Denmark in 1948 and was president of the Students Association. During World War II, he used his influence to fight for human rights and reached folk hero status with his work in the Danish underground.

Mr. Gyrsting received a master of business administration degree from Harvard's Graduate School of Business in 1955.

He lived in Andover from 1957 to 1964.

He was manufacturing manager for the Hawk Missile operation at Raytheon.

Mr. Gyrsting was on the board of Lawrence Kiwanis Club, Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and Salvation Army. He was senior warden of Christ Episcopal Church.

Following three years in Montreal, Canada, he moved back to Andover and was elected president of Control Equipment Corp. of Needham.

He then moved to Pennsylvania where he lived until he returned to Denmark for his retirement.

Members of his family include his daughters, Karen Brubaker of Haddonfield, N.J., and Linda Elkan of Bethesda, Md.; mother, Kirsten Gyrsting of Copenhagen, Denmark; brother, Kai Gyrsting, also of Copenhagen; and seven grandchildren;

He was the father of the late Steven Gyrsting.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 2 at St. Francis in the Field Episcopal Church in Malvern, Pa.

Alexander Cristofaro
Thursday, September 30, 1999
Alexander Cristofaro, 78, of Groveland died Sunday, Sept. 26, at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mr. Cristofaro was born and educated in Haverhill and graduated from Haverhill Trade School in 1940.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Cristofaro had lived in Haverhill before he moved to Groveland in 1961.

He was a vocational instructor at Greater Lawrence Technical School in Andover when he retired in 1986. Previously he was a vocational teacher at Malden Vocational High.

Mr. Cristofaro was a member of St. Patrick Parish, Christ the King Council and Knights of Columbus and a trustee and board member of Langley Public Library.

Members of his family include his wife, Louise (Diodati) Cristofaro of Groveland; daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Patricia Cristofaro and Dr. Martin Gardiner of Greenville, R.I., and Linda Cristofaro and Paul Strykowski of Newton, N.H.; son and daughter-in-law, Alexander and Suzanne Cristofaro of Washington, D.C.; brother, Fred Cristofaro of Mulberry, Fla.; sister, Lena Hamel of Haverhill; three grandchildren; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral Mass was said Wednesday in St. Patrick Church in Groveland. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery in Haverhill.

Arrangements were by C. Frank Linnehan & Son Funeral Home in Haverhill.

William John Workman
Thursday, September 30, 1999
William John Workman, 81, of Hampstead, N.C., died Monday, Sept. 6, at home.

Mr. Workman was born in Kearny, N.J. He attended Newark College of Engineering and was employed by Western Electric Co. in New Jersey and North Andover.

He was a longtime resident of Beech Circle in Andover.

Mr. Workman was a Past Master of Merrimack Lodge F&AM in Haverhill and a 50-year 32nd Degree Mason.

Members of his family include his wife, Ruth Elaine Workman; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard Workman and Mary Ellen Giacobbe of Atkinson, N.H.; daughters, Janet Workman of Plaistow, N.H., and her husband, Ansel Clark, and Lois Masters of Glenrock, Pa.; stepson, Richard Seikunas of Kinnelon, N.J., and his wife, Daniele Seikunas; sister, E. Marian Cusack of Whiting, N.H.; three grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

He was the widower of Dorothy Workman.

Memorial contributions may be made to Special Projects Fund, Topsail Presbyterian Church, 16249 US Highway 17, Hampstead, NC 28443.

Nora V. Mower
Thursday, October 7, 1999
Nora V. (Solak) Mower, 67, of East Kingston, N.H., died Friday, Oct. 1, at Exeter (N.H.) Hospital.

Mrs. Mower was born in Lawrence and was a former resident of Andover.

The registered nurse worked as an occupational health nurse and had been employed by Phillips Academy and Raytheon Co. and by Hewlett-Packard in Chelmsford.

She was a member of St. Augustine Church and the Andona Society. Mrs. Mower was a former Girl Scout leader, den mother for Boy Scouts and camp nurse at Camp Onway.

Members of her family include her husband of 46 years, Richard H. Mower of East Kingston, N.H.; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey L. and Lyan Mower of Marlboro and James H. and Mary Mower of East Kingston; daughters and sons-in-law, Judith M. and John Connors of Bedford, N.H., and Joyce E. and Rick Daniels of East Kingston; sister, Rita Schmidt of Lakeland, Fla.; brother, Walter Solak of Aurora, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass was said Monday at St. Augustine Church. Cremation was at Linwood Crematory in Haverhill.

Arrangements were by Burke Funeral Home.
