Viola M. Aiesi
Thursday, September 23, 1999
Viola M. (Ash) Aiesi, 84, of Andover died at her home on Thursday, Sept. 16.

She was born in Chelsea.

Mrs. Aiesi was formerly one of the co- owners of Reading Oil Co.

She was a member of the Green Street Baptist Church, Melrose, and also of the Eastern Star and the Republican Club.

The widow of the late Donald Aiesi, she leaves her daughter Joy Parker of Huntsville, Ala.; son Dr. Donald P. Aiesi of Greenville, S.C.; sister Genevieve Butt of Revere; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by the Burke Funeral Home, 390 North Main St.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. at Green Street Baptist Church, Melrose.

Burial was in Glennwood Cemetery, Everett.

Ward Bowden Farrington
Thursday, September 23, 1999
Ward Bowden Farrington, 43, of Winthrop and formerly of Andover, died after suffering a heart attack Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Boston Medical Center .

Mr. Farrington, a graduate of Andover High, held a certificate in sign language interpreting from Northern Essex Community College.

He worked for the Massachusetts Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross in Boston as an administrative supervisor of the health and safety division.

Members of his family include his mother, Marcelle W. Farrington, a former editor of the Andover Townsman, of Eastham; and his brother, Brian Farrington, of Rochester.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 23, at West Parish Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Massachusetts Bay Chapter, attention Mary Haplin, 285 Columbus Ave., Boston, MA 02116.

Fred G. Eldred
Thursday, September 30, 1999
Fred G. Eldred, 77, of North Andover died Sunday, Sept. 26, at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mr. Eldred was born and educated in Andover and was a graduate of Punchard High. He had lived in North Andover for 50 years.

He was a graduate of Essex Agricultural school in Hathorne and was a member of its advisory board. He attended Bentley College in Waltham, served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the Andover chapter of DAV and James R. Melvin American Legion Post 379.

The poultry farmer was co-owner of Leonhard-Eldred Poultry Farm in North Andover and delivered eggs locally and throughout the North Shore.

He was closely affiliated with Essex Agricultural Society and was chairman of the poultry committee of the Topsfield Fair and a member of its board of directors.

He was a member of the Topsfield Fair Association, North Andover Grange and Pomona Grange in West Boxford and a councilor of Agway Co.

Mr. Eldred was a longtime parishioner of St. Michael Church.

Members of his family include his wife, Ethel (Lewis) Eldred, with whom he would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 23; sisters, Mary Eldred and Louise Roberge, both of Andover; brothers, Richard Eldred of Andover and James Eldred of Methuen; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Caron Funeral Home, 30 Main St., North Andover.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated today, Thursday, Sept. 30, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Michael Church, 196 Main St., North Andover. Burial will following Brookside Cemetery in West Boxford.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael Church Building Fund, 196 Main St., North Andover, MA 01845; or to Joslin Diabetes Clinic, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, Mass.

Barbara Burchsted French
Thursday, September 30, 1999
Barbara Burchsted French, 84, of Andover died Saturday, Sept. 25, at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mrs. French was born in New York City. She attended Swarthmore and Barnard colleges and graduated in 1936.

Mrs. French had lived in Andover since 1988 and was a member of Christ Church.

She lived in Bremen, Maine, and Damariscotta, Maine, where she was a volunteer at Bremen Library and a member of the Patriotic Club. She was also a member of St. Andrew Church, Damariscotta Women's Club and Miles Memorial Hospital League and volunteered at the Lincoln Home in Newcastle, Maine.

Members of her family include her daughters, Helen F. Anderson of Andover and Margaret F. Gardner of Providence, R.I.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Newcastle, Maine.

Arrangements were by Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta, Maine.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Lincoln Home, River Road, Newcastle, ME 04555.

Alexander Cristofaro
Thursday, September 30, 1999
Alexander Cristofaro, 78, of Groveland died Sunday, Sept. 26, at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mr. Cristofaro was born and educated in Haverhill and graduated from Haverhill Trade School in 1940.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Cristofaro had lived in Haverhill before he moved to Groveland in 1961.

He was a vocational instructor at Greater Lawrence Technical School in Andover when he retired in 1986. Previously he was a vocational teacher at Malden Vocational High.

Mr. Cristofaro was a member of St. Patrick Parish, Christ the King Council and Knights of Columbus and a trustee and board member of Langley Public Library.

Members of his family include his wife, Louise (Diodati) Cristofaro of Groveland; daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Patricia Cristofaro and Dr. Martin Gardiner of Greenville, R.I., and Linda Cristofaro and Paul Strykowski of Newton, N.H.; son and daughter-in-law, Alexander and Suzanne Cristofaro of Washington, D.C.; brother, Fred Cristofaro of Mulberry, Fla.; sister, Lena Hamel of Haverhill; three grandchildren; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral Mass was said Wednesday in St. Patrick Church in Groveland. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery in Haverhill.

Arrangements were by C. Frank Linnehan & Son Funeral Home in Haverhill.

Col. John L. Collard MC
Thursday, September 30, 1999
John L. Collard, 78, a resident of Andover for the past 10 years, died Sunday, Sept. 26.

Col. Collard was born in India of British descent, educated at the Imperial Service College in Britain and commissioned at 19 as a second-lieutenant with the 4th Prince of Wales Own Gurkha Rifles in May 1941. Taking part in the early Burma retreat and the Burma offensive later in the war, he was twice mentioned in dispatches, awarded the Military Cross and received the unusual distinction of being decorated by the King of Nepal (home of the Gurkhas) with the Order of the Star of Nepal and the Nepalese Burma Medal.

After the war Col. Collard led a distinguished career, first with the Green Howard, then as a NATO adviser to the King of Norway, later commanding the York and Lancaster regiment and finally serving as the military adviser to the British High Commissioner in Canada.

Having retired from the British Armed Services in 1970, Col. Collard then spent six years negotiating and managing construction projects in the Pacific - Hawaii and then Western Samoa. After finally retiring to the Pacific Northwest for 15 years, he came to Andover in 1992.

Members of his family include his daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret R. Collard and Frank K. Johnson of Andover, with whom he lived, and Catherine C. and Mark W. Dahl of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Col. Collard was the husband of the late Mary Boyce Collard, an American Red Cross worker he met in Burma during WWII.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m. at Christ Church, 25 Central St.

Burial will be in Los Angeles, Calif.

Funeral arrangements are by Dewhirst & Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence St.
