Lt. Steven C. Avery

Lt. Steven C. Avery, 57, An Andover police officer for 28 years, died Friday, Dec. 17, at Holy Family Hospital and Medical Center in Methuen.
After graduating from Pentucket Regional High in Groveland, Lt. Avery joined the Marine Corps in 1962 and was a flight mechanic stationed in Vietnam from 1964 to 1966.
Before joining the police department in 1971, he was a tool and die maker at A&Z Tool in Plaistow, N.H., and Startronics in Georgetown.
Lt. Avery was a firearms instructor and armorer with the police force. He was promoted to sergeant in 1980 and lieutenant in 1990.
Lt. Avery received an associate's degree in criminal justice from Northern Essex Community College and a bachelor's degree in human services from New Hampshire College.
He was a member of St. Augustine Church, Massachusetts Police Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7608.
Members of his family include his wife of 32 years, Paula A. (Lucier) Avery of Andover; sons, Mark Avery of North Andover and his wife, Michelle Avery, and Matthew Avery of Andover; father, Arthur Avery of Groveland and his wife, Pauline Avery; brother, Gary M. Avery of Newton, N.H. sister, Reta Henneberry of Maderson, Conn.; stepsisters, Lisa Brothers of Wilmington, Linda Vater of Haverhill, Laura Houle of Hillsboro, N.H., and Loretta Doughty of Andover; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in St. Augustine Church. Burial was in West Parish Garden Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Burke Funeral Home.

Robert Kleven

Robert Kleven, 59, of Hampton, N.H., died Wednesday, Dec. 15, at home.
The former resident of Andover and Haverhill was born in Cambridge. He attended Haverhill schools, graduated from Governor Dummer Academy and from Denison University with a liberal arts degree and Syracuse University, Maxwell House of Liberal Arts, with a master's degree. During college he was a member of the ROTC and went on to join the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Kleven also graduated from General Electric in professional employment, compensation and labor relations.
He was founder of Kleven Group Inc., Kleven Staffing Solutions Inc. and Kleven Technical Services Inc., which have provided permanent contract and temporary staffing solutions for business and industry since 1969. He has also been corporate personnel manager for LFE Corp. in Clinton.
Mr. Kleven was past president and member of the board of directors of Massachusetts Professional Placement Consultants, past board member of Northeast Human Resources Association, past president of NCA, a national network of search and contract staffing firms, founding board member of Professional Employment Research Council and founding member of Corinthian Yacht Club, and the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. He recently received the "Man of the Year" award from New England Executive Resource Council.
Members of his family include his wife, Gloria (Conway) Kleven of Hampton, daughter, Anne E. Kleven of Charlestown; brother, Edward S. Kleven of Brookline; sister, Gail Kleven Gelb of Swampscott; and one nephew.
Funeral services were held Friday in Temple Emanu-El in Haverhill. Burial was in Sharon Memorial Park.

Helen Baron

Helen Baron, 78, of Andover died Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Prescott House in North Andover.
Ms. Baron was born and educated in Peabody. She was a graduate of Peabody High, Salem Commercial College, Wilfred Academy of Beauticians of Boston, and Boston School of Embalming.
Ms. Baron lived in Lawrence for 50 years before she moved to Andover eight years ago.
She was a licensed funeral director in Massachusetts and established the Edward Baron Funeral Home in Lawrence. She became associated with Boles Memorial Funeral Home, now known as Boles Memorial-Baron McAuliffe-Yameen Funeral Home in Lawrence, in 1979. She retired several years ago.
Ms. Baron was also a licensed insurance broker and was manager of the automobile insurance department of American Mutual Insurance Co. in Lawrence for several years.
She attended Holy Trinity Church in Lawrence and was a member of all parish and Polish Ladies organizations.
Members of her family include her cousin, Josephine Kelly of Methuen.
A funeral Mass was said Monday in Holy Trinity Church. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery in Salem.
Arrangements were by Bole Memorial-Baron-McAuliffe-Yameen Funeral Home.

Gertrude M. McCloskey

Gertrude M. (Taylor) McCloskey, 86, of Washington Park Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 14, at home.
Mrs. McCloskey was born in Andover and graduated from Punchard High in 1932.
For many years Mrs. McCloskey was a buyer for Cherry & Webb stores. She was mainly responsible for Lawrence but frequently went to New York and made selections for other locations.
Mrs. McCloskey was a member of Christ Church and its Girls Friendly Club and a scout leader for the Girl Scout troop.
She was a member of Eastern Star and a volunteer at Andover Thrift Shop.
She was the widow of Gordon McCloskey.
Funeral services were held Monday in Christ Church. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Dewhirst & Conte Funeral Home.
Helen E. Pepin

Helen E. (Walker) Pepin, 84, of Methuen died Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Nevins Nursing Home in Methuen.
Mrs. Pepin was born and educated in Lawrence and was a 1934 graduate of Lawrence High. She had lived in Andover for several years.
Mrs. Pepin was a supervisor at Tyer Rubber Co. of Andover.
Members of her family include her daughter, Sandra Curtis of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters, Barbara E. Lavin of North Andover and Shirley J. Samataro of Andover; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one niece.
She was the widow of Henry Pepin.
A funeral Mass was said Saturday in St. Monica Church in Methuen. Cremation followed in Linwood Crematory. Private burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Gladys T. Simpson

Gladys T. (Cairns) Simpson, 67, of Sandown, N.H., died Thursday, Dec. 16, at home.
Mrs. Simpson was born in Andover and was a member of the last graduating class of Punchard High School.
Members of her family include her husband, Edward F. Simpson Sr. of Sandown; son, Edward F. Simpson Jr. of Framingham; daughter, Beverly Ann Gentile of Methuen; brother, George R. Cairns of Andover and Vero Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Nancy T. Simpson and Brian M. Simpson.
Funeral services were held Monday at St. Augustine Church. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Giuseppe Marinaro

Giuseppe "Joe" Marinaro, 72, of Bellevue Road died Friday, Dec. 24, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, N.H.
Mr. Marinaro was born in Bonefro, Italy, and came to the United States after living in Canada for a short time.
When he was 24 years old he began a career in New York City that brought him to the head of an internationally known company that is a leader in fashion and clothing. He was a master designer and vice president of Brookfield clothing and in 1985 became president of Polo, Ralph Lauren Corp., a company with offices in New York City and Lawrence.
He was past president of International Association of Clothing Designers.
After he retired, Mr. Marinaro volunteered as adviser and teacher at Greater Lawrence Vocational Technical High School and did custom designing at Enzo of Andover.
He was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Church.
Members of his family include his wife of 39 years, Gilda (Tonelli) Marinaro of Andover; sons, Anthony Marinaro and Joseph Marinaro, both of Andover, and Michael Marinaro of Westfield and his wife, Suzanne Marinaro; daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Stephen Trowbridge of Derry, N.H., and Linda and Brian McLoughlin of Goffstown, N.H. sisters, Carmela DiBiase of Conneauat, Ohio, and Santa Colombo of Bonefro, Italy; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was said Wednesday at St. Robert Bellarmine Church. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery.
