David Fitzgerald
Thursday, March 23, 2000
Comedian, public speaker, film actor, avid golfer, beloved family member and friend, David "Fitzy" Fitzgerald passed away Thursday, March 16, at the age of 47. He died at home after a prolonged and valiant battle with cancer.
A graduate of Winthrop High School Class of 1970 and former shipyard worker, Fitzgerald started his comedy career in the Boston club scene where he quickly found success with a playful, raspy-voiced, every-man persona. His national television appearances included performances on A&E's An Evening at the Improv and Caroline's Comedy Hour. He was also known regionally as the television and radio voice of the Massachusetts State Lottery bunny.
As a stand-up comic, "Fitzy," as friends and fans lovingly called him, toured nationally, performing his act at comedy clubs and colleges from Bangor to Los Angeles. He also spread joy worldwide with numerous and extensive USO tours, entertaining American troops overseas in more than 45 countries during both wartime and peace.
A trained actor as well, Fitzgerald recently co-starred in the full-length feature release Southie with Donnie Wahlberg.
Actively donating his talents to the community, David regularly performed pro bono for charities including The Friends of Metro Boston and the American Cancer Society. He was also a board member of North Suffolk Mental Health.
A past board member of the New England Speakers Association, Fitzgerald was renowned as a powerful and inspiring motivational speaker. With a gentle command, he brought the gifts of humor and healing to the lives of cancer patients, survivors, and the medical professionals who serve them. Fitzgerald's compelling and informational video, "Living and Laughing with Cancer" and his entertaining cassette, "I've Fallen and I Can Get Up," are both still available at the website www.humorinst.com. Proceeds benefit the Dave Fitzgerald Foundation. An annual scholarship has been established in his name.
But perhaps Fitzgerald's greatest legacy will be in what he did quietly, behind the scenes, in his tireless service to alcoholics and addicts. For decades, he championed the helpless and seemingly hopeless onto and along the path of recovery. Hundreds of happy and whole families of recovery live on as testament to Fitzgerald's loving guidance and commitment.
Fitzgerald was the beloved husband of Rosemary (Lynch) Fitzgerald; the loving son of Jane (Carney) Fitzgerald of Winthrop and the late David Thomas Fitzgerald; devoted brother of Jon Fitzgerald of Revere; Susan Cavicchi and husband Bob of Reading; Jane Briggs of Reading; Wendy Fitzgerald and husband Bobby Adamson of Peabody; Jill Fitzgerald and Michael Bell of San Diego; the step-father of Laura Zubiel and her husband Ted, and grandfather of Caitlin of Salem, NH.
