Avery H. Thresher

Avery H. Thresher, 78, of Braintree, Vt. and a former resident of Andover, died Monday, March 5 at the Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mr. Thresher was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Randolph Union High School. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Mediteranean during World War II.
He received a degree in physical education from Springfield College and earned a master's degree in business administration from Bentley School of Accounting.
He lived in Andover for five years while working as a cost accountant for General Electric. He retired to Braintree in 1984.
He was the widower of Helen (Kelley) Thresher and members of his family include his sons, James Thresher of Washington, D.C., Avery Allen Thresher of Arizona and Gary Thresher of Pittsburg, Penn.; a daughter, Linda Grimes of Braintree; a brother, R. Milo Thresher of Braintree; a sister, Elizabeth Newcomer of Portland, Ore.; and 10 grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his son, Kelley John Thresher.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 17 at the Bethany United Church of Christ in Randolph, Vt. at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gifford Medical Center, Oncology Unit, 44 S. Main St., Randolph, Vt. 05060.

Ecalon J. Ferreira

Ecalon J. "Echo" Ferreira, 85, of Andover, died Sunday, March 4 at Wingate at Andover.
Mr. Ferreira worked at the former Wood Mills of Lawrence, J.P. Stevens Co. of North Andover and Purex Corp. in Lawrence before he retired.
Born and educated in Lawrence, he graduated from Lawrence High School in 1932.
During World War II, Mr. Ferreira served in the Army.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Lawrence. He was a member of the Portuguese American Club of Lawrence.
He was the widower of Anna (DiNatale) Ferreira, and members of his family include wife, Lucy M. (Messina) Ferreira; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Patricia Ferreira of Seabrook, N.H., Anthony and Ann DiDio of California, and Joseph DiDio and his wife Sharon of Rocky Hill, Conn.; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen T. and Michael V. Arcidiacono of Lawrence, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements were by Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen.
A Mass will be celebrated today, Thursday, March 8 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Lawrence. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.

Margaret P. Caruso

Margaret P. (Palmegiano) Caruso, formerly of Andover and Lawrence, died Sunday, March 4 at Prescott House Nursing Home in North Andover.
Mrs. Caruso was a tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service for 20 years before retiring in 1976.
Born in Naples, Italy, her family moved to Lawrence when she was 1. She was in the first graduating class from Holy Rosary School, and was very active in Holy Rosary Church. She played a leading role in their production of Sun Bonnet Sue. She also sang in the Holy Rosary choir.
When she moved to Andover, she became a member of St. Augustine Church, where she sang in the choir for several years. She was a member of the Andover and North Andover senior citizens centers.
She was the widow of Joseph Caruso, and members of her family include her daughter, Carol and her husband Jim Towle, and their daughter Lindsey, with whom she lived; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Sandy Caruso of Trumbull, Conn.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Sunday, March 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Burke Funeral Home, 390 N. Main St., Andover.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex St., Andover. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

William J. Hegarty

William J. Hegarty, 71, of Elm Street, died Friday, March 2 at home. Mr. Hegarty was former general counsel and chief administrative officer of Melrose-Wakefield Hospital for 20 years. He joined the hospital management team with responsibilities in fund development, public relations, management training and labor relations while he also attended Suffolk University School of Law.
Born in Groveland, he graduated from St. James High School in Haverhill, where he was active in several sports. He studied at the Noviate of the LaSallette Order and graduated from Merrimack College in North Andover. He later attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
While working at Western Electric Co. in North Andover in the public relations and public affairs, Mr. Hegarty managed the political campaign of James J. Zafris in a race against the late Congressman Bill Bates.
He also graduated from the Executive MBA Program offered by the Sawyer School of Management offered by Suffolk University.
Mr. Hegarty was a member of the American Society of Hospital Attorneys, and Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations.
He was a member of St. Augustine Church in Andover. He served on the pastoral council and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was also a member of the Hospitality Ministers Association at the church.
Mr. Hegarty was a member of the Wakefield Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus in Haverhill, Indian Ridge Country Club, and was a member and past president of the Melrose Lions.
Members of his family include his wife of 42 years, Joan C. (Chechowitz) Hegarty; a son, Daniel Hegarty of Silver Springs, Md.; brothers, Raymond Hegarty of Conway, Ark., Richard Hegarty of Berkeley Heights, N.J., Daniel Hegarty of Watertown, and David Hegarty of North Andover; sisters, Rosalie Beaulieu of Warrenton, Va., and Therese Heaney of Phippsburg, Maine.

John J. Minahan

John J. Minahan, 51, of Andover, died Wednesday, March 7 at Lawrence General Hospital after being stricken at his home on Salem Street.
Mr. Minahan managed the district office of PaineWebber in Andover and was first vice-president for investments of PaineWebber's Andover office in 1998.
He began his career in health care administration, serving first as assistant human resources manager at the former St. John's Hospital in Lowell, and later as director of human resources at Cheshire Hospital in Keene, N.H.
In 1980, Mr. Minahan became a stockbroker, taking a position at E.F. Hutton's Burlington office. He then worked for Prudential Securities before joining PaineWebber.
Born and educated in Wakefield, he graduated from Wakefield High School in 1967 and Providence (R.I.) College in 1971. He then enlisted in the Army and served with the Military Police in South Vietnam for one year.
In recent years, he was a volunteer and fund-raiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, where he was a member of the board of directors and had just completed a term as treasurer.
A member of St. Augustine's Parish, he served as a teacher of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for the last two years.
An avid skier, Mr. Minahan was past president of the ski team at Bretton Woods resort in New Hampshire, where he also taught children to ski.
Members of his family include his wife Madeline (Stinebiser) Minahan; daughter, Kathleen; sons, John Jr. and James, all of Andover; brother, Alfred A. Jr. of Wakefield; and nine nieces and nephews.

Helen T. Boguszewski

Helen T. (Dembkoski) (Zielinski) Boguszewski, 86, of Andover, died Sunday, March 11 at Kenoza Manor Nursing Home in Haverhill.
Mrs. Boguszewski retired from Lawrence Maid Footwear.
She was born in Chelsea and was a member of St. Augustine Church.
She was the widow of Benney A. Boguszewski.
Members of her family include sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Lena Zielinski of Andover, and Richard and Judy Zielinski Wesley of Maine; brothers, Roman Dembkoski of Revere and Walter Dembkoski of Methuen; sisters, Adella Marotte of Salem, N.H., and Henrietta Robideux of Lawrence; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also mother of the late Julia Brennan of Lawrence.

A Mass will be celebrated today, Thursday, March 15 at 1 p.m. at St. Augustine Church.
Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery.
