John Duncan Black
Thursday, April 26, 2001
John Duncan Black, 73, a long-time Andover resident, died peacefully Saturday, April 21, in Greenville, S.C.

Born July 24, 1927, he was the son of Henry and Thomasina Duncanson Black.

A graduate of Manlius Military School, Mr. Black served in the US Navy in a medical unit. He earned a BA degree from Harvard University in 1952.

Committed to lifelong learning, he later earned certificates and attended courses at Lowell Technological Institute, North Carolina State University, and Clemson University.

Mr. Black was a research engineer and manager of weaving development for J.P. Stevens & Co. Inc.

In addition to working in mills in North Andover and Dublin, Ga., he worked at Stevens Tower in New York City; Stevens Technical Center in Garfield, N.J.; and Stevens Center in Greenville, S.C.

An inventor of weaving processes, Mr. Black held national and international patents related to the development of experimental fabrics for use in safety products and the aerospace industry. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Black was a Little League coach, an exalted leader in Elks Club, an active member of Knights of Columbus, president of the Kingsgate Neighborhood Pool Association, and a honorary trustee of the Parent's Television Council.

He had a private pilot's license and also enjoyed golfing, sailing, gardening, and doing home improvement projects. Mr. Black especially loved spending summers with his children and grandchildren at the family cottage on Plum Island.

Members of his family include his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Irene Lewis Black; a sister, Margaret Hampson of Flat Rock, N.C.; daughters Elizabeth Black of Land O' Lakes, Wis., and Andrea McCartney of Simpsonville, S.C.; sons John Duncan Black Jr. of Bedford, N.H., and Thomas Black of Andover; and eight grandchildren.

Calling hours are Sunday, April 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, 35 Merrimack St., North Andover.

A memorial Mass will be said Monday, April 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, 196 Main St., North Andover. Burial will follow in Ridgewood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the "Duncan Black Memorial Fund," St. Joseph's High School, 4810 Frontage Road, Greenville, SC 29607.

Elouise Lang

Elouise (Smith) (Buschmann) Lang, 87, formerly of Andover, died Friday, April 13, at her home in Fayetteville, Ark.

She was born in 1913 in Columbus, Kansas, to Everett Edward and Mary Adelaide Goodpasture Smith, the oldest of four siblings.

She graduated from Somerville High School.

She was the widow of Helmut Victor "Vic" Buschmann of Andover, and the divorcee of Harvey Lang of Florida.

Of the approximately 34 years that she lived on Foster's Pond, 30 of those years were in the house "Vic" built. Pine wood from their property, milled in North Reading, became the boards and walls of their sons' bedroom.

She and her two young sons, Carl and Ralph, managed through war-rationing years by raising chickens and maintaining a vegetable garden while "Vic" served his country as a Marine during WWII. After his return, the family continued to raise chickens, followed by boxer dogs, and even turkeys for one year.

She was a very active, lifelong Christian Scientist. She was a member of The Mother Church in Boston and taught classes there.

She belonged to the branch church in Winchester. Later, in Andover, she joined the Christian Science Society, which held its church meetings at the November Club on Locke Street in the 1950s and 1960s. She and her husband were active members of The First Church of Christ, Scientist at 278 North Main St., which was dedicated in 1967, until he died in 1974.

She then moved to Artesia, N.M.

Mrs. Lang worked at the publishing house of The Mother Church in Boston in the mid-1930s and then again in the 1960s.

She worked for Darling Real Estate in Andover; ManPower; and at AVCO in Wilmington. She also worked as a teller at Andover Bank, and was a member of the Coop (later, Barcelos Market).

Her family said she supported her siblings and sister-in-law in their times of need by moving to Chicago and locations in Florida. Six years ago, she moved next door to her daughter, Lola Goff, in Fayetteville. She was acting reading room librarian and chairman of the executive board of the Christian Science church in Fayetteville before she died.

Boating with her husband along the New England coastline was a favorite pastime.

Members of her family include her son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Judy Buschmann of Graham, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Joan Buschmann of Andover; daughter and son-in-law, Lola and Larry Goff of Fayetteville, Ark.; a sister, Florence Fullen of Worth, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and a nephew.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Church of Christ, Scientist, 36 Main St., Andover, 01810.

Claire L. Guilmette

Claire L. (Boulanger) Guilmette, 65, of Las Vegas, Nev. and formerly of Andover, died Saturday, April 28 at Desert Springs Hospital.

Mrs. Guilmette was retired from Raytheon Co.

Born in Lawrence, she lived in Greater Lawrence all her life before moving to Nevada five years ago.

She was the widow of H. Armand Guilmette, and members of her family include daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and Alton White of Salem, N.H., and Christy and Mark Bilodeau of Las Vegas; sons, Armand and his wife Rita Guilmette of Tyngsboro, Travis and his wife Patricia Guilmette, Randy Guilmette and close friend Hazel, all of Lawrence; mother, Imelda (Demers) Boulanger of Andover; sisters, Marguerite Dussault of New Hampshire, Della Marone of Lawrence, and Anne Guilmette of Andover; brother, Roger Boulanger of Andover; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Racicot Funeral Home, 256 Broadway, Lawrence.

A Mass will be celebrated today, Thursday, May 3 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Andover.

Josephine E. Davies
Thursday, April 26, 2001
Josephine E. (Grout) Davies, 98, died Wednesday morning, April 18 at Penacook Place Nursing Home in Haverhill.

Born in Somerville, she attended Somerville schools. She moved to Reading in 1920, lived in Andover from 1948 to 1997, and then moved to Haverhill.

Mrs. Davies was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Andover, where she volunteered in the gift shop. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was the widow of Robert B. Lumsden and Henry P. Davies.

Members of her family include her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn L. and Malcolm Johnston of Haverhill; three grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 S. Main St.

Private funeral services will be at the family's convenience in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover.

Memorial contributions may be made to Penacook Place Tribute Fund, 150 Water St., Haverhill, MA 01830.

Anne McClintock

Anne McClintock, 91, of Andover, died Monday, April 16 at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mrs. McClintock was a housekeeper in the Andover area.

She was born and educated in Mahanoy City, Pa.

She lived in Methuen for 60 years.

Mrs. McClintock was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses of Methuen.

She was the widow of Joseph McClintock.

Members of her family include her son, Joseph McClintock of Seabrook, N.H.

A memorial service was held last Saturday in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, in Methuen.

Arrangements were by Farrah Funeral Home, 170 Lawrence St., Lawrence.

Everett E. Boothby

Everett E. Boothby, 76, of Andover, died Friday, April 20 at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mr. Boothby worked for New England Telephone and Telegraph for more than 30 years, retiring as a telephone engineer in 1982.

He was born in Portland, Maine.

Mr. Boothby served in the Navy during World War II and the Army during Korea.

He was a longtime member of Trinitarian Congregational Church in North Andover, where he served on several boards and committees and sang with the senior choir. He was recently named a life deacon. For the last 18 years, he served as the church sexton.

In 1971, Mr. Boothby was instrumental in the creation of the Community Day Care Center in Lawrence, also serving as its first president.

Members of his family include his wife Mavis Boothby; son and daughter-in-law Stanton and Sandy of North Andover; son James of Coudersport, Pa.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held May 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinitarian Congregational Church.

Arrangements are by Dewhirst & Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third St., North Andover

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinitarian Congregational Church memorial gifts fund.
