Francis M. Ryan

Francis Michael Ryan, 86, died Wednesday, May 9 at his daughter's home in Andover.

Mr. Ryan retired as a supervisor for the former Western Electric, now Lucent Technologies in North Andover, after 35 years.

Born in Newark, N.J., he graduated from Dixon High School in Jersey City, N.J. and later graduated from Merrimack College in North Andover. He lived in Bradford for more than 30 years and Andover for the last 10 years.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

He was the widower of Eleanor (Beaucage) Ryan.

Members of his family include daughters, Kathleen Cole-Sutcliffe and her husband Stephen of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Jane E. and her husband Joseph Piccolo of Vienna, Va., and Patricia Ryan Branca of Andover; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill.

Lillian Davidson

Lillian (Shavitsky) Davidson, 97, of Lawrence, died Thursday, May 10 at Wingate at Andover.

Born in Boston, she lived in Lawrence for more than 65 years.

Mrs. Davidson was a homemaker.

She was the widow of Philip I. Davidson. Members of her family include daughters and sons-in-law, Inez and William Schwartz, Vera and Earl Flint, and Jeanne and Philip Zeller; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Mary Davidson; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Goldman Fisher Funeral Chapel, Malden.

Joan F. Schlott

Joan F. (Draper) Schlott, 70, of Haverhill and formerly a longtime Andover resident, died Wednesday,May 16 at home.

Mrs. Schlott worked for 13 years in the recorder's office of Phillips Academy in Andover.

Born in Andover, she graduated from Punchard High School in 1948 and Simmons College in Boston in 1952.

Mrs. Schlott attended South Church in Andover. She was a member of the Andona Society and the Eastern Star.

Members of her family include her husband of 49 years, William A. Schlott; sons Kurt and his wife Diane Schlott of Derry, N.H., Bill and his wife Darlene Schlott of Georgia, and Eric Schlott of Boston; sisters, Jane Richardson and Glenna Nelson, both of New Hampshire; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Dewhirst & Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence St., Andover.

Timothy E. Lyman

Timothy E. Lyman, 57, of Methuen, died Sunday, May 20 at Prescott House Nursing Home in North Andover.

Born in Camden, Maine, he was raised in Geneva, N.Y., and Tampa, Fla.

Mr. Lyman lived at Fidelity House in Methuen for more than 20 years.

Before that, he lived at the Fernald School in Waltham and the Hogan Regional Center in Danvers.

He attended West Parish Church in Andover. In 1996, Mr. Lyman won the Jack Williams Award for personal growth and in 1997 he was awarded a citation from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health for progress in individual growth.

Members of his family include his brother, John V.R. Lyman of Edmond, Okla.; sisters, Lois Lyman of Lincolnville, Maine, and Mary S. Lyman of Alexandria, Va.; many cousins; and a loving family of friends at Fidelity House.

Calling hours are today, Thursday, May 24 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., followed by funeral services at Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway. Cremation will take place. Private burial will be in Birch Point Cemetery, Wiscasset, Maine.

Camille Fontaine

Camille (Beauchesne) Fontaine, 78, of Lawrence, died Friday, May 18 at the Wingate in Andover.

Mrs. Fontaine retired from Hy-Sil Paper Co. in Lawrence.

Born in Lawrence, she graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

Members of her family include her husband, William Fontaine; daughters, Donna and Christina Barrieau, both of Lawrence; and several nieces and nephews.

There were no calling hours. Cremation will take place at Linwood Crematory in Haverhill.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated today, Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church.

Arrangements are by Arthur J. Scott Funeral Home, 298 S. Broadway, Lawrence.

Norman H. Auchterlonie

Norman H. Auchterlonie, 79, of Salem, Mass. and formerly of Red Spring Road in Andover, died Friday, May 18 at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mr. Auchterlonie was a firefighter in Andover for 28 years, joining the department in 1950 and retiring in 1978.

Born and educated in Andover, Mr. Auchterlonie graduated from Punchard High School Class of 1940. He loved the outdoors and paddling on Shawsheen River in his homemade kayak.

After a medical condition left him paralyzed in 1983, he turned to building model ships, making many as gifts for family and friends.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a sergeant in the Pacific theatre.

He leaves his wife of 58 years Lorraine (Hamel) Auchterlonie; a son, Norman Auchterlonie Jr. and wife Juliet of Clay, N.Y.; daughters, Barbara Crowley of East Bridgewater, and Helen and husband Thomas Gifford of Salem, Mass.; sister, Isabell Maconochie of Clawson, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Burke Funeral Home, 390 N. Main St., Andover.

Stephen S. Sorota

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 10 for legendary Phillips Academy football coach Stephen S. Sorota.

Mr. Sorota, 87, died April 18 in Carrollton, Texas. His memorial service will be held at Cochran Chapel at Phillips Academy.

Many of Mr. Sorota's players went on to the College Hall of Fame and the NFL.

Mr. Sorota came to Phillips in 1936 to assist for a season as football coach and stayed for 42 years.

During his Andover coaching career from 1936 to 1978, Sorota's national recognition included an NCAA award for coaching, as well as life membership in the American Football Coaches Association. The hundreds of boys he coached include New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Class of 1971; Dick Duden, Class of 1943 and a Navy All-American named to the College Hall of Fame; John Clayton, Class of 1947 and a Dartmouth player and winner of the Bulger Lowe Award, given to the top players in New England college football; and Ed Meade, Class of 1945 who went on to captain Princeton's 1946 team.

He was born in Lowell and attended Lowell High School and St. Anselm's College in Manchester, N.H. He graduated from Fordham University in 1936.

At Andover, he contributed his skill and quiet expertise as instructor of physical education, head football coach, head track and field coach (1946-1978) and director of summer session (1956-59).

He was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame and the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Hall of Fame. In 1960, he was named to the President's Council on Physical Fitness.

When Mr. Sorota retired from Phillips Academy in 1978, Ken Keuffel, football coach at The Lawrenceville (N.J.) School, said, "Steve was unrivaled at building confidence in the adolescents he worked with."

In 1988, the Sorota Track and Field facility at Phillips Academy was dedicated in his name.

The Sorotas retired to Centerville, where they lived for 21 years, before moving to Texas. Members of his family include his wife of 63 years, Stephanie; a daughter, Diane Sorota O'Dwyer of London, England, Abbott Academy Class of '55; and sons, Stephen S. Sorota Jr. of Carollton, Tex., PA '61, Dr. Philip J. Sorota of Louisville, Ky., PA '63, and Peter A. Sorota of Dallas, Tex., PA '70.
