JOHN BRUCE CRUME '42cl died March 13 in Gainesville, Fla. He was a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. He also conducted seminars on current affairs and international relations, and in recent years tutored foreign students in English at the University of Arizona, Lake Forest College, and Hunter College. After retiring to Taos, N.M., he owned and operated a clothing store for a number of years and became active in community affairs. A leading actor in the Taos Little Theatre and later an award-winning actor and director in the Santa Fe Community Theatre, he wrote a play, D. H. Lawrence: A Mosaic, which had a successful run in this country and in the U.K. He had a lifelong passion for travel and exploration. He leaves no immediate survivors.

JOHN WOODWORTH HURSH '42mcl, S.M. '43, M.E.S. '52, died February 19 in Needham, Mass. An aerospace engineer, he retired in 1985 as division leader for research and development at the Draper Laboratory, in Cambridge. He was an active member of the aerospace committee of the International Federation of Automatic Control. In 1967 he received the Laskowitz Gold Medal Award for Research in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the N.Y., died March 4. A lifelong resident of Glens Falls, he practiced law in his hometown for more than 50 years, first in his father's firm of Herlihy & Metzner, then as confidential law clerk to J. Clarence Herlihy, justice of the Washington, D.C., and a former consultant to the women's division of the Democratic National Committee. She was also a speechwriter and publicist who worked in the presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Jimmy Carter. An arts advocate, she served for 12 years as a docent at the National Museum of American Art and for 20 years sat on the board of directors of the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, on Cape Cod. She leaves her husband, Edward, two daughters, Mary Szabat and Elizabeth Linn, and two sons, Michael and Daniel.

CARL HUDSON IMLAY '43 died January 27 in Hagerstown, Md. He was retired general counsel of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, in N.Y., died February 23. He was a pediatric cardiologist who held appointments at hospitals across the country, including the University of Rochester, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Downstate Medical Center of North Dakota, and the Medical College of Washington, D.C., during her husband's years in government service. After they settled in Ithaca, New York City, and was an active member of the group of abstract expressionist artists and writers who met regularly at the Cedar Tavern in Greenwich Village. Mr. Wagoner survives him.

JAMES HARRY OSTIS '45, of Tyngsboro, Mass., died February 17. A retired major in the Air Force Reserves, he had a long career in the automotive industry, wholesale and retail. He leaves his wife, Stella (Stamatakakos), three daughters, Eugenia Funaro, Freeda, and Luci Goss, and four sons, Harry, Timothy, Peter, and William.

JOHN MATTHEW WEJMAN '45, LL.B. '50, died November 29, 1995, in Sausalito, Cal. He was a former San Francisco trial lawyer who specialized in matters of maritime personal defense and professional liability. Before moving to San Francisco he worked for 10 years as a trial lawyer in Chicago. He leaves his wife, Jacqueline (Culham), and two brothers, Casimir and Eugene, AMP '71.

WILLIAM JOSEPH COLLIGAN '46cl, A.M. '53, died March 2 in Rockville, Md.

RUSSELL SCOT LEAVITT '46, of New Canaan, Conn., died March 28. He was a former senior editor at Sports Illustrated and Life magazines. He leaves two daughters, Antonia and Robin Melen, a sister, Mavis Wylie, and two brothers, Donald '50 and Bruce '57.

HOWARD HUGH SCHLESS '46mcl died March 30 in New Canaan, Conn. He was a professor emeritus of English and comparative literature at Columbia University. His published works include Poems on Affairs of State, vol. 3, and Chaucer and Dante: A Revaluation. He leaves his wife, Anne-Edmée (de Mareuil), two daughters, Anne-Ghilaine Marino, and Anne-Nicole, a son, Eric, and a brother, Guy Lacy.

ALLAN JOSEPH BING '47cl, of Bratenahl, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and former president of Children's Protection Services. She was active in Republican politics in Beverly and did volunteer work for the Beverly Community Council and the United Way of the North Shore. She leaves three daughters, Katherine, Sarah, and Margaret, a son, Malcolm, a sister, Frances VerPlanck, and a brother, Edward '41, M.B.A. '47.

DOUGLAS PAKE KINGSTON JR. '47, M.Arch. '55, died February 22 in Bristol, Vt. He was a former principal in the Baltimore architecture firm of CS&D, who earlier practiced with the New Canaan, Conn., firm of John M. Johansen. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, he retired to Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and was an active volunteer with Planned Parenthood. He leaves his wife, Roslyn (Carney), three stepdaughters, Rachel Avery, Holly Prunty, and Peckie Peters, a stepson, Walter Robb, a sister, Beatrice Mosea, a brother, Hugues '49, and his cherished dogs, Bruno, Max, Mortimer, and Emma.

RICHARD TWEDDELL JR. '48, M.Arch. '51, died September 30, 1996, in Cincinnati. An architect, he was a former special-projects officer for the General Services Administration in Ohio. His survivors include his wife, Marie (Bowen).

EDWARD OTIS BARTLETT '49 died January 6 in Providence. A certified public accountant, he was former secretary-treasurer of Mossberg Industries, of Cumberland, R.I., a machinery manufacturing firm. He leaves his wife, Mary (Wright), a daughter, Susan, a son, Philip, and a brother, Dwight '53.

ESMEE DEMENOCAL BROOKS '49cl died February 20 in Marlborough, Mass. She was a longtime resident of Cambridge. She leaves her husband, Shepherd '36, J.D. '40, A.M. '49, a daughter, Angelica Martin, a son, Charles, a sister, Babs Simpson, and a brother, Daniel deMenocal.

THORPE NESBIT JR. '49cl died February 12 in Broomall, Pa. A retired counselor in the field of alcohol and drug addiction, he was a longtime board member and past president of the Delaware Valley chapter of the National Council on Alcoholism. He leaves a daughter, Linda Cortright, a son, Hugh '77, his stepmother, Elizabeth, and a sister, Bland Cooper; his wife, Yvonne (Cameron), died in 1976.

STANLEY WARREN PAGE '49, of Lincoln, Mass., died March 11. He was retired vice president of Cleary, Page & Esbjorn, a Boston insurance agency. He leaves his wife, Elisabeth (Buck), his mother, Evelyn, and a brother, Norman.
