SUMNER HERMAN FRIEDMAN '31 died August 19, 1997, in Tipp City, New York City. He served with the Army Air Forces as a bombardier on Saipan during World War II and later became active with several charitable organizations, notably Jewish Big Brothers and Big Brothers of America, which he helped found. In 1955 he cofounded Destino Ltd., a jewelry firm; after his partner's death he managed the company, obtaining the license to manufacture and sell men's jewelry and accessories for Christian Dior in North America. After selling the firm in 1971, he designed a house in Acapulco for his adopted son, Rheal, and donated land to the town of Chappaqua, Massachusetts Trustees of Reservations. He leaves a daughter, Sally Benson, three sons, William, Edward, and David, and two sisters, Ellen Warren and Anne Dutka; his wife, Marion (Kimball), and another son, Warren, predeceased him.

CHARLES FRANCIS ADAMS '32 died January 5 in Dover, Mass. The retired chairman and former president of Raytheon Co., where he worked for 28 years, he oversaw Raytheon's growth from a manufacturer of transistors and vacuum tubes used in radar into a giant of the military technology and communications industry. During his tenure, the company also became a leader in hiring the physically handicapped. A lifelong yachtsman, he was a navy veteran who led destroyer escorts in the Atlantic and Pacific during World War II, rising to the rank of commander. He was an active Harvard alumnus and benefactor. He leaves his second wife, Beatrice (Dabney), two daughters, Abigail Manny '58 and Alison Hagan, a son, Timothy, and a stepson, Giannotto Penati; his first wife, Margaret Stockton, died in 1972.

FRANCIS BERYL BROIDA '32 died November 5 in Thousand Oaks, Cal. He was former eastern sales agent for Sbicca of N.H. With her husband, Paul, in 1935, she founded the Dublin School, a college preparatory school for boys, and for many years handled the accounts, taught history, and managed the kitchen and housekeeping staffs there. The school continued to be the focal point of her life after her retirement in 1970: she rarely missed a meeting, athletic event, show, or party ; the school named her a life trustee in 1991. She leaves three daughters, Nancy Haynes, Louisa Birch, and Cornelia Throssell, a son, Paul '63, and a brother, Nelson Metcalf '35.

WILLIAM WALLACE MEIN '32 died December 15 in Woodside, Cal. He began his career in the family mining business and later served as president of three companies, Calaveras Cement Co., Bishop Oil Co., and Clearlake Water Co. An avid horseman, he competed three times in the Tevis Cup 100-mile ride from Squaw Valley over the Sierra Washington Post, he joined the new U.S. Agency for International Development and in 1968 became chief of its news division; he also served five years as a Foreign Service officer in Iran. He later became town historian and founder of the town museum of Bethany Beach, Del. He leaves his wife, Sally (Brownell), and four daughters, Susan, Ann Mechanic, Nancy Indelicato, and Wendy Kilpatrick.

ELIZABETH LOMBARD MULLIKEN '33cl died October 29, 1998, in Fort Myers, Fla. She worked for 18 years as payroll supervisor for the board of education in Pelham, New York City. An army veteran of World War II, he was retired from a career with Fairchild Publications, in Maine Medical Center, in Portland, and Maine's first respiratory therapy departments, pulmonary function laboratories, and intensive care units, and developed protocols for tuberculosis treatment and prevention for the state's health department. He became an early opponent of the tobacco lobby in 1968, when he and a colleague obtained a ban on cigarette machines at Maine. An avid reader and jack of all trades, he raised champion samoyeds, built his first color television set, and designed the house where he and his family lived for 47 years. A former New England intercollegiate heavyweight wrestling champion, he served as a medical officer with the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. He leaves his wife, Golde (Rodman), and four sons, Peter, Mark, Paul, and Robert.

WILBUR OTIS THOMAS '35, of Taneytown, Md., died March 30, 1998. A self-employed accountant and former executive with Cambridge Rubber Co., he also served as a scoutmaster in Taneytown for 30 years. His wife, Mabel (Sharrer), died September 14, 1998. He leaves no immediate survivors.

ROBERT HASWELL CLARKE '36, of Framingham, Mass., died June 24, 1998. He retired in 1981 after a 35-year career with London Harness Co., in Wellesley, a retailer of luggage and fine leather goods; earlier, until it was sold to London Harness, he worked at W. W. Winship. He leaves his wife, Elizabeth (Buckingham), and a daughter, Susan Tolland.

GERMAIN GREEN GLIDDEN '36 died February 9 in Norwalk, Conn. He was a former national squash racquets champion whose titles included the intercollegiates (twice), singles (which he won three times, retiring undefeated in 1938), doubles, and veterans (which he also won three times, retiring, again undefeated, in 1956). Later he became a portrait artist, muralist, and cartoonist. His works are on display in the Churchill Library, the Fogg Art Museum, and the national halls of fame of baseball, basketball, and tennis. He was the founder, in 1959, of the National Art Museum of Sport, now based in Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and the Greater Boston Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and a trustee or governor of numerous area educational institutions. A World War II veteran, he served four years as a captain in the army's coastal artillery. He leaves his wife, Frances (Hovey) '52, Ed.M. '73, a daughter, Emily, a son, Peter '76, and a sister, Letitia.

LEONARD CASE LEWIN '36cl died January 28 in New Haven, Conn. He was a political satirist best known for his Vietnam-era book Report from Iron Mountain (1967), a parody of a secret government study on the perils of peace in a war-based economy. Debate raged about whether the bestseller was true, and Lewin did not confess his authorship until 1972. In recent years he was dismayed to find right-wing paramilitary groups seeking to promulgate it as proof of a government conspiracy; he successfully sued one such group, and the current publisher has tried to stop rightist groups from posting the book on the Internet in the guise of a true government document. He leaves a daughter, Julie, a son, Michael '64, and his longtime companion, Lorraine Davis.

DONALD FREDERICK MACMANN '36 died November 1 in Norwood, Mass. He was a retired contract administrator at Raytheon Corp. and also worked as a consultant for several accounting firms, including Ernst & Ernst. For a number of years he sang with the Handel & Haydn Society. He leaves his wife, Marion (Fuller), two sons, Michael and Jeffrey, and a sister, Jean Taylor.

JOSEPH JOHN PONCHALEK '36, of Ithaca, Washington lawyer who specialized in cases involving the Federal Power Commission. He served in the Coast Guard during both World War II and the Korean War. He was an outdoorsman and a crossword puzzle enthusiast. He leaves his wife, Arla (Graves), and a daughter, Marian.

GURDON ROBINSON ABELL '37, of Woodstock, Conn., died January 23. He had been principal scientist at AVCO Everett Research Laboratories, in Everett, Mass. He leaves no immediate survivors; his wife, Anne (Kiuru), predeceased him.

HENRY PARSONS COOLIDGE '37, A.M. '39, died January 9 in Lincoln, Mass. He was an instructor in English literature at Tufts University for many years, chiefly under the aegis of its liberal arts program at the Boston Museum School. Earlier he taught for 10 years at Harvard. He was an avid photographer and balletomane and an expert ballroom dancer. He leaves his wife, Alice (Crawford) '40, and four daughters, Lissa, Sallie, Gail, and Judith Jones.
