Gerard M. O’Meara
Gerard M. O’Meara, 76, of Milton, died at St. Joseph Manor in Brockton, after a short illness.
Born in Boston, he graduated from Dorchester High School in 1944 then entered the U.S. Navy for two years.
He graduated from Boston College in 1950 and received a Master’s Degree from Boston State College in 1951. He attended Boston University for a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies.
Mr. O’Meara began his teaching career in the Boston school system. In 1956 he began teaching at Boston Teachers College and obtained a Professorship in 1964 at Boston State College. In 1965 he became its first dean.
He was affiliated with Roxbury Community College for five years before retiring in 1991.
He was a past Grand Knight of Dorchester Lower Mills Knights of Columbus Council #180 in 1953-54, District Deputy 1954-57, and Mass State deputy 1970-72.
Mr. O’Meara was also a member of the Walsh Veterans Post of Dorchester.
He was a communicant at St. Gregory Church, Dorchester for over 70 years.
Husband of the late Anne H. (Heiser) O’Meara, he is survived by a son, Christopher G. O’Meara of Massachusetts House of Representatives assistant majority leader’s chief Administrative Assistant. He served in this capacity for over two decades. Mr. Moore retired in the early 1980s.
He is survived by his wife, Madeline Moore; two daughters, Jenny Moore of Milton and Maryanne Moore Haigley of Nantucket; a son, Edward J. "Jay" Moore of Carver; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was the father of the late Carol Moore.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Elizabeth Church on January 17. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home.
Joseph L. Lanata
Joseph L. Lanata, 84, died January 9 at South Shore Hospital.
He grew up in Mattapan and lived in Hull before moving to Hingham 21 years ago. He was a graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School and Boston University, class of 1941.
Mr. Lanata was a nine time decorated World War II veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart.
He saw extensive time in the Asian-Pacific Theatre.
Former longtime personnel director of Whitings Milk Co., he then served as health inspector for the towns of Hull, Holbrook and Randolph for 25 years.
He was a member of the James W. Richardson VFW Post No. 7 in Hull and the Hingham Senior Citizen’s Center.
He is survived by his wife Rita A. (Pelletier) McKenzie; two sons, John Lanata of California and Marilyn Zurwaski of Middleborn; two stepsons, Ed McKenzie and John McKenzie, both of Hingham; two stepdaughters, Karen O’Neil of Scituate and Teresa Sartorio of Quincy; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was the husband of the late Amelia (Campbell) Lanata, and the father of the late Frederick Lanata and Richard Lanata.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Resurrection Church, Hingham on January 13. Burial was in Hull Village Cemetery, Hull.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.
Donations may be made to South Bay Wellness Center, 109 West Torrance Boulevard, Suite 100, Redondo Beach, Georgia; a sister, Madeline Jones; and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Agatha Church on January 20. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home.
Joseph F. Palumbo
Joseph F. Palumbo, 78, of Milton died January 18 at Milton Hospital.
Born and educated in Everett, he was a Milton resident for 41 years.
Mr. Palumbo served in the Navy during World War II as a helmsman on PT 304, Squadron 22. He received two stars for his service in the European-African Theater.
He received a bachelor’s and masters degree from Connecticut; and 10 grandchildren. He was the father of the late Maura J. Villard.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Agatha Church on January 24. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.

Mary J. Flanagan
Mary J. Flanagan, 87, of Milton, died January 12 at Milton Hospital.
Born in Boston, she grew up in Jamaica Plain, where she lived for many years. She lived in Milton for the past 23 years.
She worked as an executive assistant with New England Power Company for nearly 50 years.
Ms. Flanagan was a longtime volunteer at Carney Hospital and attended St. Mary of the Hills Church.
She is survived by four nieces, Mary Lou Smith of Connecticut, Ellen F. Bradley of Milton, Elizabeth Flanagan of Weymouth and Kathleen J. Tilton of Milton; three nephews, James Flanagan of Waltham, William Flanagan of Duxbury and James Flanagan of Brockton; and many grandnieces, grandnephews and great-grandnephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary of the Hills Church on January 18. Burial was in Old Cavalry Cemetery, Roslindale.
Funeral arrangements were made by Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.
