Viola Hackley
Viola (Powell) Hackley, 85, formerly of Milton, died January 26 at Youville House in Cambridge.
Born in Chelsea, she graduated from Everett High School and then worked at John Hancock Insurance in Boston. She lived in Milton for 56 years before moving to Youville House a year ago.
Mrs. Hackley was a member of the Parkway United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Loyalty Unit and president of the Women’s Society. She was also a member of the Amateur Gardeners of Milton and participated with the Milton Players. She was a past president of Women of Rotary.
Mrs. Hackley was an accomplished painter winning awards at local amateur art shows, including best painting at a South Shore art competition.
The wife of the late Charles Jackson Hackley, she is survived by two daughters, Rosalie Anders of Cambridge and Susan Hackley of Boston; a son, Herbert Hackley of Florida, and Susan Hackley of Boston.
She belonged to Parkway United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Loyalty Unit and president of the Women’s Society.
She was an enthusiastic gardener and a long time member of Amateur Gardeners of Milton, twice serving as president. She loved participating both onstage and backstage in productions of the Milton Players. She also was president of Women of Rotary.
Inspired by her mother-in-law, an accomplished painter, she became proficient with both oil and watercolor, winning awards at local amateur art shows, including best painting at a South Shore art competition. The walls of her home were decorated with her beautiful paintings, mostly of nature scenes.
Also known for her superb cooking, she delighted in preparing family meals and in every way created a warm and loving home.
For many years the family had a summer home at Buzzards Bay. Later, she and her husband spent many winters in Stuart, Kentucky, and three grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated January 15 at Sacred Heart Church, Roslindale. Burial was in St. Michael Cemetery, Roslindale.

Catherine McCloskey
Catherine P. "Kay" (Leonard) McCloskey, 79, died January 19 at her home.
Born in Boston, she lived in Dorchester and later in Milton for 27 years, spending summers in Harwich. She moved to South Harwich five years ago.
She was formerly a secretary at Thomas Geraghty Associates, Boston for 10 years.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph J. McCloskey; three daughters, Patricia Howland of Uxbridge and Joan McCloskey and Suzanne McCloskey, both of California, and John McCloskey of Norfolk; and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Elizabeth Church on January 24. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.

Ethel M. McGeough
Ethel M. (McGuire) McGeough, 82, of Milton, died January 18 at New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton.
She lived in Hyde Park until moving to Milton more than a year ago.
Mrs. McGeough worked in the Boston School Department’s pupil adjustment department as a secretary for 10 years before retiring in 1976.
She was a longtime parishioner at St. Pius X Parish and a member of the Wampatuck Golf Club in Canton.
She is survived by her husband, Frank A. McGeough; a sister, Margaret I. McGuire of Hyde Park; and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Francis G. McGeough.
A funeral Mass was celebrated January 21 at St. Elizabeth Church. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, West Roxbury.

Marcella M. Serafini
Marcella M. (Nangeroni) Serafini, 96, died on January 22 at Milton Hospital.
Mrs. Serafini was a former proprietor of Chick’s Merchants’ Grille in Fanueil Hall, which she owned for 25 years.
Born in Italy, she was a volunteer and benefactor for Milton Hospital for many years.
Wife of the late Emil A. Ferroli and Americo Serafini, she is survived by a sister, Eleanor Bossi of Milton, a brother-in-law, Frank Bossi; a sister-in-law, Mary Nangeroni; two step-daughters, Virginia Higgins of Braintree and Ruth Bushlow of Florida; four nieces, Anne Murphy of Milton, Barbara O’Connor of Paxton, Janet Bejlich of Rochester, and Louise McGowan of New Hampshire, and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was the sister of the late Martha M. Wiswell.
A funeral service was held at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home on January 10. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.

Lillian A. Parsloe
Lillian Alfreida Marie Parsloe, 75, of Northport, formerly of Milton, died February 3, at the Waldo County General Hospital, Belfast, Maine.
She was born January 16, 1928 in East Boston, the daughter of Thomas and Victoria Andersen.
Ms. Parsloe enjoyed playing the piano, drums, and loved to dance and sing.
She is survived by her husband William Parsloe; three children, Victoria Myrick of Walpole, Linda Green of Milton, and William Parsloe Jr. of Walpole; a sister, Gloria Feely of Norwood; two grandchildren, David Myrick and Melissa Green; and her beloved dog "Margaret."
A funeral service was held February 10 at the St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, Belfast, ME with Father Kent Tarpley officiating.

Dorothy H. Cassidy
Dorothy H. (Elliott) Cassidy, 85, died January 29 at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, after a brief illness.
Born in Arlington she was a graduate of the Arlington Public School System. She had lived in Milton for over 54 years.
Ms. Cassidy was a member of the St. Mary of the Hills Church Sodality and St. Mary of the Hills Guild. She was also the former President of the Boston Chapter of the Townsend Club, a group organized across the country to gather grass roots support for the Townsend Act to be passed by Congress to start the Social Security Administration.
Wife of the late John J. Cassidy Jr., she is survived by two sons, John "Jack" J. Cassidy III of Milton and Alan P. Cassidy of Scituate; two daughters, Janet M. Wood of Bedford and Gail E. Gallagher of Norwell; a sister, Charlotte Smith of Arlington; a brother, James Elliott of Arlington; and her grandchildren, Meghan Cassidy and Michael Cassidy, both of Quincy, Sean Gallagher of Boston, and Jennifer Gallagher and Kevin Gallagher, both of Norwell.
A funeral Mass was celebrated February 3 at St. Mary of the Hills Church. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.

Doris F. Manning
Doris F. (Bertram) Manning, a lifelong resident of Milton, died January 24 at Carney Hospital.
She graduated from Milton High School and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Agatha Church. She was a member of St. Agatha’s Ladies Society.
Mrs. Manning was a former executive secretary and office manager for Barney and Carey Lumber Company. She also worked for the Town of Milton and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas D. Manning of Milton; two sons, Tim Manning of Hingham and Peter J. Manning of Norwell; two daughters, Catherine A. Manning of Hingham and Carol A. Krall of Hanover; a sister, Margaret G. Bertram of Quincy,and eight grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Agatha Church on January 27. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
