Fred Birge Bidwell
GILL - Fred Birge Bidwell, 86, of 33 Atherton Rd., died Nov. 26, 2003 at Poet's seat Nursing Home in Greenfield.
Marrianna Berry:
Active in Petersham organisations
PETERSHAM - Marianna I. (Trowbridge) Berry, 82, of 131 West Rd., died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004 in the Athol Memorial Hospital after an illness.
She was born in New York a short time and moved to Chevy Chase, Md. where they remained until moving to Petersham in 1960.
She was an honor graduate of the Bethesda - Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Md., class of 1938. She was awarded a full four year scholarship to George Washington, DC and spent most of her working years in various secretarial capacities. She retired from Engel Plumbing in Athol after 15 years of service to the company.
She was a longtime active communicant of St. Peter's Church in Petersham and at one time served as treasurer for the parish.
Mrs. Berry was always active in civic, social and church organizations. She was chairman of the recommendations committee in N.Y., she was a daughter of Merrill and Harriet (Thomas) Lucia.
Fiercely independent and instinctively maternal, she combined an iron will with the golden heart of a mother and raised her younger siblings after the premature death of their mother.
She achieved her high school diploma from the Ralph C. Mahar Regional School in 1973 at the age of 60. She had worked as a clerk most of her adult life for the Department of Public Welfare in Orange and Templeton, retiring in 1978.
A member of the South Athol United Methodist Church, she was also instrumental in the development of the day care center at the Orange Congregational Church and later served as a board member.
A motherly type person, Mary enjoyed knitting, reading, Christmas gifts and especially writing poetry as well as raising her children.
Survivors include her son, Zane Dubour of Athol; daughters, Joyce Dubour of Dover, Del., Lucia Dubour of Oxnard, Maine; and her half siblings, Bud, Rose, and Melissa Lucia.
She was predeceased by six siblings and a daughter, Diane Bates of Sherman, Conn.
A prayer service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. in the South Athol United Methodist Church, 65 Morgan Ave., South Athol.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. in Witty’s Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomas McKeown, Pastor of the South Athol United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery in Belchertown will be private.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday at Witty’s Funeral Home, from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
