ATHOL - Ruth A. (Fitzpatrick) Smith, 95, of Athol, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004 in the Quabbin Valley Healthcare.
She was born on June 1, 1908, in Fitchburg, the daughter of Joseph and Bridget (O'Connor) Fitzpartick. She grew up in Fitchburg and graduated from Fitchburg High School. She attended Fitchburg Normal School where she graduated with a degree in teaching.
She was an elementary teacher in Maine. She also enjoyed hunting, crocheting, her many grandchildren and her pets. She was a member of the Tully Fire Department Women’s Auxillary. In her later years she looked forward to eating out at area restaurants.
Her husband of 64 years, Alan F. Teague, Sr., died in 1994. She leaves five sons, Lawrence Teague, Raymond Teague both of Orange, Terry Teague of Athol, Alan F. Teague, Jr. of Flint, MI, Gary L. Teague of Royalston; two daughters, Frances Flagg of Panama City Beach, FL, Patricia Rushford of Orange; 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. in Tully Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr R. Lee Smith, pastor of Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, officiating.
Calling hours will be Monday, Feb. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Higgins - O’Connor Funeral Home, Athol.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the Athol Animal Shelter, 584 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.
Amelia Petrosky
ATHOL - Amelia Petrosky, 87, of 263 Hapgood St., died at home Friday, Feb. 20, 2004.
Funeral arrangements with the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home are in complete.
Fellows Services
ERVING - Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Witty's Funeral Home, Orange, for Graham A. Fellows, 34, of 50 Murdock Hill Rd., who died on Saturday, Feb. 14, in Erving.
The Rev. Vance E. Frank officiated. Interment will be private at a later date.
A reception was held at the Athol - Orange Elks Lodge 1837 following the service.
Witty's Funeral Home, Orange, directed the arrangements.
Moore Services
ORANGE - Funeral services were held on Friday, August 6, 2004 in Witty's Funeral Home for John N. Moore Jr., 86, of 220 Cross Road, who died on August 2nd in Athol Memorial Hospital following an illness. Pastor Fred Swedberg officiated and sand "Amazing Grace" along with his wife, Elizabeth "Whiby", and daughter, Katie. Interment followed in Jones Cemetery, Orange. The pallbearers were David Moore, Daniel Moore, Adam Moore, Matt Moore, John Knetchel, Bill McLaren, and Courtney Woodcock. A reception followed the committial service at the Central Congregational Church in Orange.
Witty's Funeral Home, Orange, directed the arrangements.
Caterina Schiappa
Blue Ribbon Recipient
ORANGE - Caterina (Pesci) Schiappa, 94, of 673 North Main St., died peacefully Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, surrounded by her family at the home of her son and daughter in law, Frank and Kathy Schiappa.
Born in Bardone, Italy, on Sept. 5, 1909, a daughter of Francesco and Maria (Alfieri) Pesci, she grew up in Italy and was married there in 1935. She and her husband immigrated to the United States soon after their marriage. They purchased their farm in 1937 where she lived until the present time. She proudly became a Naturalized American Citizen in 1955.
Mrs Schiappa was widely known for her gardening, especially for strawberries and peas, which she sold at a roadside stand along with many other vegetables. She won numerous Blue Ribbons through the years at the annual Franklin County Fair. She was also skilled at sewing, knitting and craft making. She made afghans, quilts and knitted socks along with other sewing projects.
She was a member of both St. Mary's Church and St. Mary's Women's Club.
Her husband of 42 years, Albino Schiappa, died in 1977, and a daughter in law, Janet Schiappa, died in 1997.
She leaves three sons, Sonny Schiappa and wife, Claire of Avon Park, Fla., Frank Schiappa and wife, Kathy of Orange, Benjamin Schiappa and wife, Carolina of Gardner on Feb. 10,1924, the son of Louis and Eva (Lashua) Landry, and had been a resident of Texas; a brother, Harry J. Landry of Athol; two sisters, Paulette Newton of New Salem and Louise Wiggins of Bowdon, Georgia; four grandchildren, Lea Landry, Joseph W. Landry, Victoria Smaldone and Erica Smaldone and many nephews and nieces. Four brothers, Paul J. Landry, Arthur Landry, Cyrille Landry and Arnold Landry, as well as two sisters, Leona Chicoine and Evelyn Perreault, predeceased him.
The funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 7 from the Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St. followed by a 11 a.m. Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6.
