ORMOND BEACH, FL - John Paul Raymond Szal, 92, of Ormond Beach, died on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in the Athol Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 11, 1912 in Passaic, NJ, to Andrew and Mary (Taras) Szal. He attended St. Joseph's grammar school, and Garfield High School, both in Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1934.
During World War II, he worked on radar design for the Navy, with Sikorsky on advancing helicopter design, and also designed a new engine mount for the Corsair dive - bomber (to keep the engine inside the plane when it pulled out of a dive - it had a tendency to fall out). He traveled throughout Asia and Africa while Director of Overseas Operations at Standard Oil in the 1950s. He later became Assistant to the President at Flintkote Corporation, a building products company. In 1993 he was nominated to the Rolex Award for Enterprise for the process he developed to make paper without water.
John is survived by Wanda, his loving wife of 64 years, their four sons, Gregory, Paul, Gerald, Mark, and their wives, and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Emilie Marie, 96, a Felician nun, and his brother, Louis, 94.
A memorial mass will be celebrated for him at 10 a.m., on Friday, July 16 at St. Peter's Church, Route 32, Petersham, MA.
Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.

PETERSHAM - Constance (Barnes) Peters, 71, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., formerly of Petersham, died on May 14, 2004.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at the East Street Cemetery in Petersham. Family and friends are invited to attend.

ATHOL - Xavier Kenneth - William “Pooh Bear” Reynolds, age 3, of 183 Lake St., died on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at the University of N.H., June 3, 1924, a son of Roger and Susan (Groudle) Hoke, he was one of five children. He grew up in Athol and attended Athol schools.
He worked at the former Anson Shoe Shop briefly before being drafted into the United States Army during World War Two. He served in England at the 232nd Station Hospital as an officers cook until his discharge in 1946.
After his marriage in 1952, he moved to Westerly, R.I. where he resided until returning to Athol in 1990.
He was a textile worker many years in the Westerly area prior to retiring.
His wife, Reita P.(Moore) Hoke, died in 1983.
He leaves a sister, Leona Jarvi of Athol; a nephew, Walter Jarvi of Athol and a niece, Donna McCoy of Orange.
A graveside service will be held Monday, July 12, at 11 a.m. in South Cemetery, Orange.
There are no calling hours.
