ATHOL - Joseph J. Kavaliunas, 94, formerly of 636 Daniel Shays Hwy., died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 in the Quabbin Valley Healthcare.
He was born on Dec. 13, 1901, in Lithuania, the son of Kostas and Marciona (Jurginaite) Kavaliunas. As a young man he was a farmer in Lithuania.
In 1939 he married Ona Tarandaite. During World War I in 1944, he became a displaced person, unable to return to his family. Between 1947 and May of 1949 he served with the 2040 Labor Co. U.S. Army, employed as a carpenter on army housing projects in Germany.
In June of 1949 he arrived in Oregon in 1985. She married Edward Kane on Dec. 4, 1995 and they moved to California where he worked at Hughes Aircraft Corporation and as a part - time golf caddy.
After returning to this area he graduated from a Boston beauty academy and began his 45 - year career as a hair stylist. He worked many years for his uncle, Henry Wood, in both the Athol and Orange beauty shops. He continued working for Liesel's Bridge to Beauty in Athol and Sincerely Yours Shop, Orange until his retirement.
An enthusiastic golfer and tennis player, he was a former member of Ellinwood Country Club, Athol and a member of the Wood Pile tennis team at Lake Mattawa.
He was an active member of First Universalist Church more than 50 years, formerly serving as Director of Religious Education, a choir member, and also serving on the Church Board of Management along with several other committees.
He was instrumental in the republication of a church pamphlet about Universalism which resulted in the adoption of the off center cross symbol by the Universalist Church.
A former member of the First Universalist Church Men's Club, he was a licensed Lay Preacher and had been a member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an early peace activist group.
He enjoyed big band music and has an extensive collection of music from that period.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, May I. "Maize"(Cowdrey) Deane; three sons, Jay Deane and wife, Pamela of Athol; Donn Deane and wife Sheila of Orange and Fred Deane and wife, Sharon of Orange; five grandchildren, Aubree Deane, Kyle Deane, Audriana Deane, Ben Hause and Alycia Hause all of Orange; an aunt, Geraldine Findlay of Athol; and many cousins.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 3, at 2 p.m. in First Universalist Church, 31 North Main St. The Rev. Ralph T. Clarke will officiate. Burial will be private.
There will a calling hour Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m in the church.

Brian H.W. Patterson

MIAMI, Fla. - Brian Henry Wolcott Patterson, 62, of NW 10th Ave., Miami, died Feb. 25, 2004 in the Cedars Medical Center in Miami, following an illness.
Born in Gardner, Mass. on Sept. 20, 1941, he was the son of Caroline Hilda (Proulx) Patterson of South Daytona. He leaves a son, James Brian Patterson of Port Orange, and a sister, Cheri Lynn Wilkinson of Oakhill. His father was the late Henry Wolcott.
Mr. Patterson moved to Florida in 1966 and was a stock clerk for Publix Market from 1969 to 1979 in South Daytona. He was a member of the White Chapel Church in South Daytona.
He graduated from the Chicopee High School in Chicopee Falls, Mass. in 1961 and enjoyed cookouts, photography, crafts, and fishing.
Graveside services will be in the Silver Lake Cemetery in Athol on July 3, at 11 a.m.

Edith A. Mara

OXFORD - Edith A. (Anderson) Mara, 97, of Front Street, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in the Oakwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Webster. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Elverton L. “Bert” Mara of Oxford, who died in 1992.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia E. Daviau of Riverside, CA; one brother, Edwin C. Anderson of Petersham; seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara A. Rawson of Oxford, who died this past February; and five siblings, Pearl, Marion, Alice, Carl, and John.
Her brother John died the day before her, on June 21, 2004.
She was born in Petersham, the daughter of the late John A. and Alice B. (Barnes) Anderson, and lived in Worcester, Petersham, West Brookfield, and Spencer, before moving to Oxford in 1940. She graduated from the Petersham High School in 1925 and later graduated from Post's Business College in Worcester.
She was the treasurer for the town of Oxford for over 10 years, retiring in 1964. Previously, she was the assistant manager at the A&P Grocery Store in Oxford for several years. She also worked as a secretary for several years at the Grafton State Hospital. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Oxford and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Oxford. She was a member of the Golden Age Club in Oxford. She loved traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico with her husband in their retirement.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 3 in the Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford. Burial will follow in North Cemetery, Oxford. Calling hours will be Friday, July 2 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home.
