Grace M. Guignard

ATHOL - Grace M. (Pettit) Guignard, 92 of 779 Sanders St., passed peacefully with family members by her side on Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in the Quabbin Valley Healthcare.
She was born in Albany, NY, on Feb. 3, 1912, the daughter of the late William and the late Mary (Michaels) Pettit. She grew up in the New England area and attended schools in Athol.
Mrs. Guignard worked at the former Athol Comb Shop and the former J.F. McElwain Shoe Company for many years. She was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren and had a special love for animals.
She leaves a daughter, Marie A. Chaisson, and her husband, Richard, of Athol; three granddaughters, Susan M. Schueller and her husband, Richard, of Chelmsford, Kathryn A. Chaisson and Nancy J. Chaisson, both of Athol; a grandson, Jon P. Chaisson of Athol; and many nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick J. Guignard, who died in 1959; a son, Patrick J. Guignard, Jr., who died at birth in 1935; five brothers, William, Walter, John, George, and Ernest, and by four sisters, Lola, Mary, Amelia and Dorothy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at the Our Lady Immaculate Church.
Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Friday, May 28, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Athol Animal Shelter - Town Hall, 584 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.
Roger E. Smith
Korean War Vet
GARDNER - Roger E. Smith, 68, of 110 Rich St., died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at the University of North Carolina; three sons, Ralph Davis of Ohio, and Geoffrey Davis of North Carolina; a brother, Wayne Day of Ohio; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Her first husband, Richard Davis, died in 1987 and her second husband, Clarence West, died in 1993. She also had a brother, Gerry Glennon, who died in 1993.
Mrs. Flagg was born in Sanford, Maine.
She was a United States Navy Veteran, serving during the Korean War.
She had worked in the cafeteria for the Templeton School System before her retirement a few years ago.
A funeral service with military honors will be held on Friday at 1 pm in the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St. Leominster.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8 pm in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion of Athol, 325 Pequoig Ave. Athol, MA 01331.
Cornwell Services
NEW SALEM - Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Witty's Funeral Home, Orange, for Arthur L. Cornwell Jr., 84, of 25 Osbourne Rd., who entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 19 surrounded by his family. The Rev. Fr. William Lunney of St. Mary's Church in Orange officiated. Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery in New Salem. The pallbearers were; Ryan Lyman, Arthur Adams, Tom Swan, Ryan Swan, Jim Mackie, and E. J. Nemeth.
The American flag was presented to Arthur's daughter, Debra Lyman, by John "Spider" Smith, Department Surgeon, American Legion Post 172 in Orange. Taps was performed by Eric Goodchild on bagpipes, as well as "Amazing Grace."
Witty's Funeral Home, Orange, directed the arrangements.
June B. Patterson
CLAREMONT, New York and moved to Brookfield and Warren were she resided until moving to Athol in the early 1970's.
She was a nurse at the Monson State Hospital for 13 years. She also worked as in several shoe companies in the Ware and East Brookfield. She specialized in making ice skates for many professional athletes. She went on to work at Wright's Ribbon in West Ware for several years.
She was active in the Cub Scouts in Warren for many years serving as
Den Mother.
She leaves her husband, Darwin L. Salls; four sons, Donald Salls of Athol, David Salls of Worcester, Douglas Salls of Keene, NH, Daren Salls of Beaver, PA; three daughters, Cheryl Jefferson of Athol, Lori LaRhette of Orange, Heidi McCassie of Athol; 18 Grandchildren, Carolyn J. Salls, Michelle Salls, Jason Salls, Sarah Salls, Jennifer Houle, Melissa Seamon, Daniel Salls, Allyson Salls, Sharon Dack, Belinda Jefferson, Miranda Jefferson, Jolene Jefferson, Leah Jean LaRhette, Jeffrey LaRhette, Jarrod LaRhette, Clairissa McCassie, Evelyn McCassie, Shane Howard; and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27, at 10 a.m. in the J.
Edward Murphy Funeral Home with Rev. Harold V. Lloyd, Jr. Pastor of the Athol Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be private.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the
funeral home.
Frances M. Rivers
Former Bookkeeper
ORANGE - Frances M. (Benbow) Rivers, 94, of 471 East River St., died Sunday, May 23, 2004 in Athol Memorial Hospital.
Born in Boston, on June 21, 1909, a daughter of Joseph and Margaret J. (Harkness) Benbow, she grew up in Revere and moved to Athol in her late teens.
After her marriage she came to Orange 75 years ago. She worked as a bookkeeper many years ago at the N. D. Cass Company, Athol.
She enjoyed her family, homemaking, cooking, gardening, crocheting and reading.
Her husband, Fred O. Rivers, Sr., died in 1971; her son, Fred O. Rivers, Jr., died in 1997, and a son in law, Richard A. Anderson, died in 1993.
She leaves three daughters, Hazel G. Denehy of Whately and her husband, Daniel Denehy of Charlemont, Dorothy F. Kelley and husband, John of Gardner, and Kay M. Anderson of Hudson, N.H.; a daughter in law, Marion A. Rivers of Orange; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services are private.
There are no calling hours.
