PHILLIPSTON - Funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at Witty's Funeral Home in Orange, for Edith M. (MacKay) Sweeney, 87, formerly of 355 State Rd., who died on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol. The Rev. Vance E. Frank officiated.
Interment followed in South Cemetery, Orange. The pallbearers were Michael Sweeney, William Sweeney, Thomas Sweeney, Dennis Duplessie, Brent Keith and Brian Keith. Following the committial service, a reception was held at the Franco - American Club in Athol.
Witty's Funeral Home, Orange, directed the arrangements.
Hollie S. Rocci
ATHOL - Hollie S. (Nichols) Rocci, 38, of 29 Metropolitan Court, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in the Athol Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of Fiske Funeral Home are incomplete.

ATHOL - Richard C. Phillips Jr., 66, of 958 South Main St., died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the Worcester Medical Center in Worcester.

Arthur Comee;
WWII Veteran, Fabric Cutter
GARDNER - Arthur A. Comee, 88, of 75 Rosewood Drive, Gardner, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004 in the Leo P LaChance Center.
He was born in Gardner where he worked for, 34 years, retiring in 1982.
He is survived by his wife Lillian G. (Magill) Comee of Gardner; two sons, Dennis W. Comee of Gardner, and David A. Comee of Gardner; one brother, Virgil of Templeton; three grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a charter member of the Two Hearts As One, the Jumptown Twirlers Club, and was an avid Red Sox fan.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
The funeral was held today in the Boucher Funeral Home (www.boucherfuneral.com), 110 Nichols St., Gardner. Following cremation burial will be in the Norte Dame Cemetery.

Allen S. Hollis
LAKELAND, Fla. - Allen S. Hollis, 63, of Lakeland, died Oct. 27, 2004 at his home.
He was born on July 11, 1941 in Boston, Mass. and lived in Leominster, Mass. for 14 years before moving to Texas; a daughter, Kym Karvanpaa of Orange, Mass.; and five grandchildren; and fiancee, Veronica (Amato) Hollis.

ATHOL - Funeral services for Daura H. (Perry) Quirk, 86, of 486 Twitchell St. were held Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 at the Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark D. Bariloni, pastor of the Athol - Orange Baptist Church, officiating. A eulogy was prepared and read by Kimberlee Cimino, and a poem was read by Brianna Spooner, both granddaughter's of Mrs. Quirk. The organist was Donald "Spin" Ainsworth.
Burial followed in Silver Lake Cemetery and the bearers were: Glenn Deyo, Matthew Clement, Michael Spooner, Richard Mantyla, Christopher Cimino and Nicholas Deyo.
Stockdale Services
ORANGE - A Memorial service was held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 at Witty's Funeral Home for James R. Stockdale, 43, who had been living in the Athol - Orange area recently, who died on Oct. 13, 2004 in Boston following an illness. The Rev. Vance E. Frank officiated. A reception was held at Mr. Stockdale's aunt's home in Winchendon.
Interment in Wildwood Cemetery, Gardner, is private.

Edward N. Legare
Machine Operator
ORANGE - Edward N. Legare, 51, of 519 East River St., formerly of Greenfield, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004 at the UMass Medical Center in Worcester.
He was born in Greenfield on April 12, 1953 the son of Albert and Mary (Samal) Legere. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1971. He had been a resident of Greenfield prior to relocating to Orange in 1999. He had been a machine operator for the New England Extrusion in Turners Falls since 1990.
He served with the 2nd Battalion 41st Infantry 2nd Armored Division with the United States Army in Vietnam and attained the rank of Specialist 4th Class. He was awarded the Combat Infantry badge and the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star.
He enjoyed fishing, canoeing and his dog, “Emmy.”
Besides his mother, of Greenfield, he leaves a son, Gregory of Worcester; a daughter, Angela Morrissey of Ft. Bragg, Calif.; a brother, Raymond and his wife, Valerie, of Greenfield; two sisters, Polly Hillman and her husband, Daniel, all of Greenfield; two granddaughters and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
His longtime companion and friend was Barbara Gelineu of Orange.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Green River Cemetery with the Rev. Armand Proulx, pastor of the 2nd Congregational Church, officiating.
A calling hour at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., Greenfield, will be held Thursday, from 10 to 11 a.m.

PHILLIPSTON - Edith M. (MacKay) Sweeney, 87, formerly of 355 State Rd., died Sunday evening, Oct. 31, 2004 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare, Athol, following an illness.
Born in Hanson on July 12, 1917, she was a daughter of Thomas and Ida (Tucker) MacKay and had lived in Orange many years, graduating from Orange High School.
She was married to Melvin E. Sweeney on June 9, 1934. He died on Nov. 14, 2000.
A homemaker for many years, she had previously worked at the former McElwain Shoe Co. In Athol and later the Silver Front Café, also of Athol, several years.
She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and oil painting.
Survivors include her daughters, Caroline Marquis and Beverly Duplessie, both of Athol, Diane Elliot of Barre, and Donna Heath of Phillipston; her sons, Melvin Sweeney Jr., of Wendell, and David Sweeney and Thomas Sweeney, both of Orange; 21 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Marilyn Sanborn of Orange and Margaret Stacy of Dover, Del.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange. The Rev. Vance E. Frank will officiate.
Interment will follow in South Cemetery, Orange.
There will be a calling hour from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Quirk Dies;

ATHOL - Daura H. (Perry) Quirk, 86, of 486 Twichell St., died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004 at Athol Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 7, 1917 in Lynn, the daughter of Leslie A. and Laura H. (Potter) Perry. She grew up in Lynn, moving to Athol for five years as a child, returning to Lynn where she graduated from Lynn Classical High School. She later graduated from Wheaton College in Norton and returned to Athol where she has lived most of her life.
She and her husband owned and operated Quirk’s Stationary Store in Athol for many years, also had worked as a social worker in the special needs department of the Athol elementary schools for several years. She was an active member of the Athol - Orange Baptist Church, had served as church clerk, also serving on many boards and committees and was active in the FA - HO - LO group. She was always very civic minded, served as past president of the Athol Woman’s Club, past president of the Athol Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, trustee of the Athol Memorial Hospital, member of the Athol Council on Aging, served as treasurer of the Athol Sportsman’s Club for several years. She enjoyed knitting, reading, crossword puzzles and spending time with her family and traveling.
Her husband of 58 years, Walter F. Quirk, died in 1999. She leaves three daughters; Judith Deyo and her husband Gary of Athol, Janice Clement and her husband Peter of Enfield, CT, Jackie Spooner and her husband Jim of Orange; seven grandchildren, Glenn Deyo of Worcester, Gayle Mantyla of Sturbridge, Kimberlee Cimino of Ellington, CT, Matthew Clement of Manchester, CT, Brianna and Michael Spooner, both of Orange and Nicholas Deyo of Princeton; and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., with the Rev. Mark D. Bariloni, pastor of the Athol - Orange Church officiating.
Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery and calling hours will be Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m.
