Army Veteran
WINCHENDON - John F. “Jack” Rice, 71, of 151 Rice Rd., died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004 in the Heywood Hospital, Gardner, after an illness.
He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

ORANGE - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004 in St. Mary's Church, for John R. "Bob" Rauss, 83, of 30 Lake Mattawa Rd., who died on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the University of Massachusetts District Commission woking at the Quabbin Reservoir. He returned to school on the GI Bill and attended refrigeration school in Chicago. He worked as the maintenance superintendant at the Maria Assumpta Acadamy for 33 years.
He was involved with the nieghborhood crime watch, he was a call firefighter in Petersham for many years, he was part - time police officer in Petersham for 15 years, he was a charter member and Past Commander of the Petersham Amercian Legion Post No. 415, he was a member of the Petersham Grange, a communicant of St. Peter’s Church, and a member of the 83rd infantry division company L29th. A member of the Athol Singing Men, he sang at the1963 World’s Fair in N.H.; step - son Mark Boudreau of Athol; daughters Darlene Gamache of Orange, Lorraine Boudreau of Athol, Gina Vitello - Shepard of Brattleboro; step - daughters Cynthia Clark of Hubbardston, Christine Collins of northern N.H., Bryan Newton of New Ipswich, Thompson of Groton, and Bonnie Rearick of Ashby; one brother, T.H. Newton Jr. of Athol;two sisters, June Parmenter of Athol and Joan Songer of Orange; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Newton was a well known pianist in the area and was a piano teacher for many years and also was a piano technician and salesman and owned and operated Dick’s Music Studio in Townsend and Leominster for many years.
He was a 1949 graduate of Athol High School and attended Fitchburg State College. He was an avid character artist and enjoyed teaching children the piano.
He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army and was awarded five bronze stars.
He was born in Athol, on Jan. 26, 1931, a son of the late T.H. and Beatrice (Smith) Newton Sr., and lived in the Fitchburg area for the past 50 years.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, Oct.29 at noon in the Highland Cemetery, Hillside Terrace, Athol. The Rev. Edward R. Neuhaus will officiate.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress St., 5th Floor, Boston, Ma. 02210.
The Smith - Mallahy - Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, is directing funeral arrangements.
