Herbert J. Merrill Sr.
Herbert J. Merrill Sr., 74, of Hudson, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002 in
Marlboro Hospital.
His wife, Philomena (Foti) Merrill, died in 1990. He leaves six
daughters, Frances Temple of Hudson, Brenda Walinstien of Clinton,
Pamela Martinez and Patricia Bairos, both of Marlboro, Mary Ann
Leger and Lori Viera, both of Worcester; three sons, Robin J.
Merrill Jr. of Worcester, Mark Merrill of Marlboro and Robin
Merrill of Clinton; a brother, Robert Boyce of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, after a brief
illness.
She leaves a daughter, Dorothy A. Spoor of Clinton; a son, Thomas
Scesny Jr. of Lancaster; her mother, Amanda (Pinard) Vengren
Sech of Lowell; four brothers, Raymond Vengren of Hudson, N.H., Francis Vengren of Zephyrhills, Fla.,
and Mike Sech of Lowell; four sisters, Elaine Wills of Tonawanda, N.
Y., Patricia Elderd of Lowell, Barbara DiMouro of Swampscott and
Susan Carbonneau of Billerica; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
A brother, Walter J. Vengren, died in 1999. She was born in Lowell,
daughter of the late Walter S. Vengren, and lived in Stow before moving
to Clinton. She graduated from Billerica High School in 1964.
Mrs. Agnew was a credit union manager at Sentry Insurance
Co., Westford. She enjoyed bingo.
The funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 26, from Tighe Hamilton
Funeral Home Inc., 50 Central St., Hudson, with a Mass at 9 a.m. in St.
Isidore Church, 429 Great Road, Stow. Burial was in Brookside
Cemetery, Stow.
George J. Ciavola, 79
George J. Ciavola, 79, of 15 Lindberg St., Clinton, a World War
II veteran and a retired master electrician, died Wednesday, Oct. 23,
2002 in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus, Worcester, after
an illness.
His wife of 55 years, A. Teresa (Fay) Ciavola, died in May.
He leaves two sons, Dr. George M. Ciavola of Rutland, Vt., and Gerald
F. Ciavola of Princeton; a daughter, Mary E. Boyce of Clinton; a
brother, John Ciavola of Clinton; a sister, Alice M. Kilcoyne of Clinton;
a granddaughter; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was born in Clinton, son of Domenic and Carolina (Sanginario)
Ciavola. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1942 and attended
Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston. He was also a Navy veteran
of World War II, serving in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Mr. Ciavola was a master electrician and worked more than
40 years for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local
96, Worcester, before retiring in 1989. He was wire inspector for the
town of Clinton for several years.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church; a life member
of Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars; a former
member of Clinton Council Knights of Columbus and Clinton Lions
Club; and assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts Troop 9 for several
years. He enjoyed skiing and traveling and was an ice hockey fan.
The funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 26, from Robert J.
McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St., with a Mass at 10 a.m.
in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 1 Cross St. Burial was in St. John's
Cemetery, Lancaster. Memorial donations made to Our Lady of the

Marie A. Ciesluk Soldi, 62
Marie A. (Spencer) Ciesluk Soldi, 62, of 21 Summit St., died
Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002 in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial
Campus, after an illness.
She leaves two sons, Anthony S. Ciesluk Jr. of Clinton and Jimmy
L. Ciesluk of Sterling; a daughter, Ruthann Bauer of Clute, N.H.; two sisters, Virginia Mason of The Woodlands, Connecticut.
Mrs. Shaw worked 35 years for the Leominster Public Library before
retiring.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist First Church.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, in
Unitarian Universalist First Church, 15 West St. There are no calling
hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leominster Public
Library, 30 West St., Leominster, MA 01453. Silas F. Richardson &
Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., is directing arrangements.
John L. Diaz, 65
John L. Diaz, 65, of 290 Berlin St., Clinton, formerly of Middlebury,
Vt., an insurance salesman, died Friday, April 6, 2001 in Clinton
Hospital after being stricken ill.
He leaves his wife of 34 years, Janet E. (Deakins) Diaz. He was born
in Stamford, Conn., son of John and Mary (Cleveland) Diaz, and lived
many years in Middlebury before moving to Clinton in 1975. He attended
Middlebury schools. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean
War.
Mr. Diaz was an insurance salesman 39 years for Bankers Life
& Casualty, Framingham, until the time of his death. He was a member
of U.S. Power Squadron, Worcester Chapter. He was a former board
member of Worcester Life Underwriters and the Regatta Point Sailing
Association, Worcester.
The memorial Mass was Tuesday, April 10, in Our Lady of the
Rosary Church. Burial will be at the family’s convenience. Robert J.
McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St., directed arrangements.
John J. Dowd, 73
John J. Dowd, 73, of 109E Ridgefield Circle and of Pine Island,
Fla., formerly of 724 Main St., Lancaster, a retired engineer,
died Thursday, April 12, 2001 in Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston,
after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 53 years, Jeanne (Cloutier) Dowd; four sons,
John J. Dowd Jr. of Petersham, Paul T. Dowd of Barre, Matthew P. Dowd
of Anchorage, Alaska, and Sean J. Dowd of Barre; four daughters, Maureen
D. Shamgochian of Petersham, Jane A. Rose and Elizabeth Narbonne,
both of Lancaster, and LuAnne O’Dowd of St. James City, Fla.; a
sister, Mary McGowan of Clinton; a brother, Thomas Dowd of Sterling;
15 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A sister, Beatrice
Brownell, and a brother, Joseph Dowd Jr., both of Clinton,
and a grandchild predeceased him.
He was born in Clinton, son of Joseph and Katherine (Kilcoyne)
Dowd, and moved to Lancaster in 1960. He lived the past five years
in Clinton and Pine Island. He graduated from Clinton High
School in 1947, where he was on the Gaels football team when they
won the state championship in 1945. He attended Worcester Junior
College and Lowell Institute at Massachusetts. He retired in
1995.
He was a member of the Society of American Military Engineers,
New England Society of Civil Engineers, and a charter
member of Minuteman Power Squadron. He taught springboard
diving in Bangor, Maine, and was a scuba diver. He enjoyed playing
bridge.
The memorial Mass was held Monday, April 16, in St. John the Evangelist
Church. Burial will be at the family’s convenience.
