Francis L. Gleason Sr., 56
Francis L. Gleason Sr., 56, of 64 Marlboro Road, Berlin, died
Saturday, May 12, 2001 in UMass Memorial Medical Center - University
Campus, Worcester, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He leaves three sons, Warren Gleason of Princeton, Francis Gleason
of Millbury, and Michael Gleason, owner of Michael’s Bridge
Diner in Lancaster, with whom he lived; two daughters, Francene
Gleason of Clinton, and Wanda Pane of Hubbardston; his former
wife, Sandra A. (Cooper) Wilson of Clinton; a sister, Sandy Newton of
Groveton, Vermont. He was an avid outdoorsman.
He held many state titles for weight lifting and arm wrestling.
A funeral service was held at Wednesday, May 16, in United
Church, 109 Haskell Ave., Clinton.
Burial was private in North Cemetery.

Doris M. Laney, 81
Doris M. (Morey) Laney, 81, of 1237 Central St., Leominster,
formerly of Lancaster and Clinton, died Thursday, May 10, 2001 in River
Terrace Healthcare Center, Lancaster, after an illness.
Her husband, Robert G. Laney, died in 1995. She leaves a
son, Robert G. Laney Jr. of Lancaster; three daughters, Cynthia
LaFountaine of Hyannis, Gayle Welvaert of Clinton and Pamela Laney
of Leominster, with whom she lived; eight grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Carole Czepiel,
died in 1997. She was born in Clinton, daughter of Charles and Mary
E. (McNamara) Morey, and lived here most of her life. She graduated
from Clinton High School. Mrs. Laney worked at Colonial Press for
30 years and later was an assembler at ITT Suprenant before retiring.
She was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Church.
The funeral was held Monday, May 14, from Philbin-Comeau
Funeral Home, with a Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union
St. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Priscilla F. Jewett, 81
Priscilla F. (Jackson) Jewett, 81, of Woodward Avenue, Berlin,
the first female selectman in Berlin, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at her
home after an illness.
Her husband, F. Walter Jewett, died in 1953. She leaves a son,
Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Linda P. Shute
of Leicester and Ellen L. Jewett Onorato of Vero Beach, Fla.; three
sisters, Elsie B. Sibal of Clinton, Rachel M. Corman of Lancaster
and Rizpah M. Warbin of West Boylston; a granddaughter; nephews
and nieces. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Brittan A.
and Florence E. (Felton) Jackson.
She graduated from Becker College.
Mrs. Jewett worked at White and Bagley Company, Worcester,
for 21 years. She received the Lions Club Citizen of the Year Award for
1993-1994. She was the first female selectman in Berlin from 1967-1970.
She was on the Board of Registrars from 1956 to 1985, a cemetery
commissioner, on the Finance Committee, the board of directors
of the Berlin Retirement Home in 1980, the co-chair of the Berlin
Sesquicentennial 1962 and Berlin town clerk from 1956 to 1965. She was
also a member of the Berlin Grange, a former member of the
PTA, the Tuesday Club, the Women’s Guild of the First Parish
Church of Berlin, the Berlin unit of the Salvation Army and the 4-H
Council.
A memorial service was held Saturday, May 12, in the First Parish
Church of Berlin. Private burial will be at a later date. Memorial

Edna M. Samler, 85
Edna M. (Blake) Samler, 85, of Sterling, a World War II veteran,
died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at home.
Her husband, Harry E. Samler, died in 1990. She leaves three
daughters, Juanita Bugbe of Suffern, Texas,
Norell B, Heinold of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Holly J. Bahosh of
Royalston; a brother, Donald LeComte of Clinton; four sisters,
Miriam Hazard and Fern Phillips, both of Clinton, Jean DeCesare of
Leominster, and Shirley McNicholas of Las Vegas; many grandchildren;
great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Hubbardston,
daughter of Leslie and Evelyn (Chester) LeComte, and lived many
years in Clinton before moving to Sterling 38 years ago.
Mrs. Heinold worked 29 years at Sterling Manufacturing Co. She
was a longtime member of the Ladies Auxillary Fraternal Order of
Eagles, and an avid Bingo player.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, in
Hillside Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may

MA 02205, or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham,
MA 01701. Silas F. Richardson Funeral Home, 106 West St., Leominster
is assisting with arrangements.
C. Lawrence O’Connell
C. Lawrence O’Connell, 89, of 30 Kilmurray St., Clinton, a former
teacher, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 in River Healthcare Center, Lancaster,
after an illness.
He leaves a brother, Thomas O’Connell of Clinton; several nieces,
nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and a lifelong friend,
Ernest Thomas. Three brothers, Jake O’Connell, Stephen O’Connell and
Daniel O’Connell, and two sisters, Rita Gaughan and Mary Jason, predeceased
him. He was born in Clinton, son of Thomas and Katherine
(Quinn) O’Connell, and lived all his life here. He graduated from Clinton
High School and Clark University, and received a degree in education
from Worcester State College. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of
World War II, serving in England and Africa.
Mr. O’Connell was a teacher and guidance counselor at Clinton
High School until retiring many years ago. Previously, he was a truant
officer in the Clinton school system. He was a member of Our
Lady of the Rosary Church and the Clinton Teachers’ Association.
A funeral was held Monday, Oct. 22, from the Robert J. McNally
Funeral Home, 304 Church St., with a Mass in Our Lady of the Rosary
Church. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Lancaster.

Roger A. Scott Jr., 66, of 20 Spruce St., Clinton, a former business
owner, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001 in Clinton Hospital after an illness.
He leaves four sons, Michael Scott of N.H.; four daughters, Sheree Willey of Massachusetts Chapter, 101A FirstAve., Waltham, MA 02154.
