Lawrence E. Smart, 88
Lawrence E. Smart, 88, of 315 Main St., Lancaster, a retired
educator, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001 at home.
He leaves his wife, Orene (Wiley) Smart; a daughter, Lorene
Smart-Nugent of San Francisco; a son Lawrence E. “Bill” Smart of
Leominster; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. He was
born in Plymouth, Maine
and earned a bachelor’s degree from Atlantic Union College. He
later studied at the University of Toronto, earning his CHES, a master’s
degree without the thesis, and then studied at Boston University,
where he earned his CAGS, a doctorate degree without the thesis.
Mr. Smart taught many years in both public and private schools.
He was also a former Superintendent of Education for the Seventhday
Adventist’s Education Division and worked several years in the
development department at Atlantic Union College. He was a member
of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Lancaster. In 1997,
he was recognized as the school’s Alumnus of the Year.
Mr. Smart was active for many years in the Lancaster community
and served on the town’s Board of Health, Zoning Board of
Appeals and the Lancaster Sewer District. Many give Mr. Smart
credit for being the proponent for sewering South Lancaster.
Funeral services will be private.

St., Lancaster, is directing arrangements.
Maryrose Brazao, 76
Maryrose (Brisbois) Brazao, 76, of 1104 Main St., Lancaster, a
volunteer worker, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001 at home after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 55 years, Herbert Brazao; a son, Mark
Brazao of Lancaster; five daughters, Cheryl Moriarty of Lancaster, Su asan
Green of Acton, Sandra Rotella of Connecticut several years ago. She attended Clinton
schools.
Mrs. Hawkins worked as an assembler at Rayovac Corp. in Clinton
for many years, retiring in 1972.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and the St.
Gabriel Society.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Nov. 20, from Robert J.
McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St., with a Mass at St. John
the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery,
Lancaster. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s

Mary M. O’Malley, 71
Mary M. (Burlingame) O’Malley, 71, of 73 John St., Clinton,
an assembler, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 in Fairlawn Rehabilitation
Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 47 years, Martin H. O’Malley; two
sons, Mark S. O’Malley of Leominster and Keith B. O’Malley of Clinton;
a daughter, Kim E. O’Malley-Houck of Sterling; a brother, Arthur
F. Burlingame Jr. of Leicester; a sister, Barbara Spencer of Worcester;
seven grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born and raised
in Worcester, daughter of Arthur F. and Mary (Fleming) Burlingame,
and lived many years in Clinton.
She graduated from Worcester Vocational High School.
Mrs. O’Malley was an assembler at Nypro Inc. for the past 19
years and worked until the time of her death. She was a member of St.
John the Evangelist Church.
The funeral was held Thursday, Nov. 15, from Robert J.
McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St., with a Mass at St. John
the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St. Burial will be at the family’s convenience
in Reservoir Pines Cemetery.

Shirley M. Pupecki, 70
Shirley M. (Sargent) Pupecki, 70, of 13/4 Acre Court, Clinton,
died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 in Clinton Hospital after an illness.
Her husband, Joseph T. Pupecki, died in 1978. She leaves a
son, Joseph T. Pupecki of Clinton; three daughters, Louise M. Chouinard
and Diane M. Casasanto, both of Clinton, and Amy T. Cruz of
Gold Bar, Wash.; two sisters, Dorothy Bierholm of Lancaster and June
Szymkiewicz of West Boylston; seven grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren;
nephews and nieces.
She was born in Clinton, daughter of Charles and Louise (Gagnon)
Sargent, and attended Clinton schools.
Mrs. Pupecki worked 13 years at VanBrode Milling Co. and 15
years for Raschel’s Children’s Clothing Store, Westboro, retiring
in 1999. She then worked part-time at Thurston House Collectibles. She
was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church and Worcester Horticultural
Society.
The funeral was held Monday, Nov. 19, from Robert J.
McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St., with a Mass at Our
Lady of the Rosary Church, 1 Cross St. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery,

Thomas S. Bullis, 60
Thomas S. Bullis, 60, of 24 Water St., Clinton, died Tuesday,
Nov. 13, 2001 at home after a long illness related to emphysema.
He leaves his companion of 27 years, Betty A. Tourville, with
whom he lived; two sons, Thomas Bullis Jr. of Leicester and Patrick
Bullis of Holden; a daughter, Jacquline Bullis of Worcester; his
mother, Eleanor Rogers of Clearwater, Fla.; two brothers, George E.
Bullis of West Boylston and Eugene M. Bullis of Newburyport; nephews
and nieces. He was born in Watertown, Maine, before
moving to Clinton nine years ago.
He graduated from Northboro High School in 1959.
Mr. Bullis worked 15 years at Bay State Abrasives, Westboro.
The funeral service will be private in Leland-Hays Funeral
Home, 56 Main St., Northboro.

John P. Hanney, 84
John P. Hanney, 84, of 54 Richman St., Clinton, a retired office
manager, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 in St. Vincent Hospital at
Worcester Medical Center after an illness.
He leaves a sister, Mary C. Hanney, with whom he lived; three
nieces, Mary Jane Nuzzetti of Worcester, Kate Hanney of Clinton
and Ellen Philbin of Lancaster; grandnieces and grandnephews. He
was born in Clinton, son of William and Catherine (Philbin) Hanney.
Mr. Hanney was an office manager at Standard Burner Co.
before retiring. He was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist
Church.
