TEMPLETON - Francis E. Smith, 88, of 184 Main St., Otter River, died Monday, April 9, 2001, in the Leo P. LaChance Rehabilitation Center, Gardner.
Among his survivors is a brother, Harry T. Smith of Athol.
Casella Services
ORANGE - A concelebrated funeral Mass for John F. Casella, 73, of 28 McKenna St., was held Saturday in Our Lady Immaculate Church. Rev. Stephen D. Johnson, pastor was the celebrant, assisted by Rev. Raymond P. Messier, pastor of St. Francis Assisi Church and Rev. Andre M. Gariepy, pastor of Holy Spirit Church in South Gardner.
The organist was Bob LeMoine and soloists were Liz Hume and Mary Casella. Readings from the scripture were shared by son, Sean L. Casella and grandchildren, Kathryn Perry and Sean E. Casella. The gifts were presented by daughters, Jane Perry and Eileen Casella and granddaughter, Carolyn Perry. The eulogy was given by son Chris Casella.
Honorary pallbearers were Ed Esposito, John Kakitis, Hawk, and Fred Olander. Active Pallbearers were Sean E. Casella, Andrew Perry, Joe Bishop, Greg Stone, Greg Weeks, Dave Bramhall, Harvey Gutherie and Jack Haley.
Representing the Edward H. Phillips Post 102, American Legion were Robert Carey, past commander; Victor Litchfield, past finance officer; Peter Krustapentus, adjutant and Donald Walker, sargent - at - arms.
The United States flag was presented to Mrs. Virginia Casella by Robert Carey.
Private burial will be held in Gethsemane Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Bernard P. Niedzwiedz
ERVING - Bernard P. Niedzwiedz, 83, of 1 Gunn St., died unexpectedly Saturday, April 7, 2001 in Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield.
He attended Erving schools. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theater at Normandy.
Among his survivors is a son, Bernard P. Niedzwiedz of Erving; a brother, Myron Niedzwiedz of Erving and a sister, Jennie Simondiski of Erving.
Novack Service
ORANGE - A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, April 6, 2001 in St. Mary's Church for Anne M. Novack, 94, of 27 Whitney St., who died March 28, 2001. Rev. Brian F. McGrath presided, with Theresa Bergquist, cantor, and Janet Paoletti, organist, of the Mass.
Burial was Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol. The pallbearers were Jay Novack, Donald Novack, Jerry Novack and Robert Novack.
Ora A. Johnson
ORANGE - Ora A. Johnson, 92, of Leominster and formerly of Orange and Turners Falls, died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at the Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield.
Born in Orange, Sept. 23, 1908, she was the daughter of Leon R. and Lilla M. (Shepardson) Whitney Johnson.
She was educated in Orange Schools and graduated from Orange High School in 1926.
From 1940 to 1946 she was the owner and operator of the Athol Lying Hospital in Athol, along with her partner the late Helen T. Thomas.
Bigwood Services
Funeral services for Marian A. (Choquette) Bigwood, 61, of 24 Morton Meadows were held Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home, with the Rev. Fr. Stephen D. Johnson, pastor of Our Lady Immaculate Church officiating and the organist was Theresa Gabis.
The burial was in Silver Lake Cemetery and the bearers were; Leroy Wood Jr., Michael Choquette Jr., Paul Dorow, Roy Sinclair, Frank Lemaire III, Joe Boudreau.
Jeffrey S. Roe, Enjoyed Outdoors
NEW SALEM - Jeffrey Starbuck Roe, 56, of 35 Shutesbury Rd., died Tuesday in his home after an illness.
Born in Orange, N.J., April 11, 1945, a son of Howard S. and Marion (Miller) Roe, he grew up in Short Hills, N.J. After graduating from Newark Academy, Newark, N.J. he later graduated from a four - year business college.
He served with the U.S. Air Force four years at Davis Air Force Base, Texas. Prior to moving to New Salem in 1998, he had lived in N.Y. and Leah S. Roe of Glens Falls, N.H., Hannah Cramer Pasquale and husband, John of Newmarket, N.Y.; a brother, Hadley S. Roe and wife, Mary Lee of Mt. Kisco, N.Y.; a cousin, Barbara Howell of Forty Fort, Penn.; six nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held Saturday Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. in Central Congregational Church, 22 South Main St. The Rev. James E. Willis, will officiate.
Burial of the cremation urn will follow at the family home on Shutesbury Road.
There are no calling hours.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 for Anthony Binkauski, 72, of East Longmeadow and formerly of Athol, who died Sept. 29, 2001 at the Sunbridge Rehabilitation and Nursing in East Longmeadow, at Witty's Funeral Home, Orange. The Rev. Freda Maier officiated. Janet Paoletti was the organist.
Interment followed in South Cemetery. The pallbearers were, Peter Hebert Sr., Peter Hebert Jr., Thomas Binkauski, and Tony Binkauski.
MacDonald Services
A concelebrated funeral Mass for Eleanor D. (Cadran) "Tiny" MacDonald, 71, of 85 Everett Ave., was celebrated Monday, Oct. 1, 2001 in Our Lady Immaculate Church. Rev. Stephen Johnson, pastor, was the celebrant, assisted by Rev. Brian McGrath, pastor of St. Mary's Parish in Orange. The organist was Theresa Gabis and the singer was Vicki Chace.
Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The pallbearers were daughters Michelle MacDonald and Melissa Gordon; Jim Simmington, Tim Anderson, Tim Emond, and Ed Billiel.

Franklin A. Handy; Accountant
Franklin A. Handy, 78, of 65 Eastford Rd., Auburn, and formerly of Athol, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001 in the Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
He leaves an uncle Dwight Allen and his wife Margaret Allen of Athol; cousins, David and Wendy Allen and their children, Karen and Sarah Allen all of Rochester, Vt.; cousins, John and Debbie Allen and their son Jared Allen of Townsend and their daughter, Kirsten Gage of New Ipswich, Massachusetts Amherst.
He served during World War II in the United States Navy.
He was an accountant for the Holden Plastic Company in Auburn for many years he retired in 1985.
He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed reading books about the military, going to the beach and investing and watching the stock market.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. in the Fiske Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home.
