Joan F. Bailey Lioness Club Founder
PALM COAST, Fla. - Joan Frances (Maher) Bailey, 64, a retired eduactor, passed away suddenly Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital - Flagler, Bunnell.
Born in Worcester, she was the daughter of Henry and the late Catherine (Ennis) Maher of Athol, and a graduate of the Maria Assumpta Academy in Petersham.
She moved to Palm Coast in 1992 with her husband Edward, from Rockville, Md., where she founded, and was the first president of, the Lioness Club.
She was a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, the Palm Coast Irish Club, the Flagler Beach Woman's Club and the Palm Coast Elks Auxiliary. She had also been national president of the American Society of Sanitary Engineering Auxiliary. She enjoyed scrapbooking and sewing.
She is survived by her husband Edward; two sons, James of Chicopee, and Christopher of Silver Springs, Md., a daughter, Eileen Shlosser, of Springfield; her father, Henry Maher of Palm Coast; four brothers, Henry P. Maher of Mesa, Ariz., Francis X. Maher of Stowe, Vt., Michael J. Maher of Athol, and Alfred J. Maher; a sister, Kathleen Kachinsky of Henderson, Nev.; six grandchildren, and a great - grandchild.

William L.D. Cook Farmer, Minister
GARDNER - William L.D. Cook, 89, of 827 Green St., died on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at the Heywood Hospital.
Born in Chesterfield, Gardner Chemist, Rotarian
Everett B. Gardner, 93, of the Baldwinville Nursing Home, 51 Hospital Rd., Baldwinville, formerly of Athol, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at the nursing home.
He was born in Springfield on Oct. 11, 1907, the son of Charles and Edna B. (Solomon) Gardner. He graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1926, and had lived in Springfield, Monson, and Wakefield, moving to Athol in 1952.
He worked as a chemist, operating the Athol Lacquer Company on Lumber Street in Athol for more than 20 years. He had previously worked for the Monsanto Chemical Company in Springfield for many years.
He had been a member of Athol Congregational Church for many years, sang in the church choir and served as church treasurer for many years. He was a former member of the Athol - Orange Rotary Club for more than 30 years, and served on the town of Athol building committee during the construction of the Pleasant Street School. His wife of many years, Ella May (North) Gardner, died in 1983.
He leaves three sons, Roger W. Gardner of St. Cloud, Fla., Richard H. Gardner of Hadley; two sisters, Pearl McCurry and Grace Meehan both of East Longmeadow; nine grandchildren and several great - grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Arizona; two sisters, Cheryl M. Moriarty and her husband Edward of Gardner on Oct. 13, 1950, a son of Gerard and Teresa M. (Dugan) Maillet, and lived in Athol for several years before moving to Northampton 20 years ago. He graduated from Athol High School.
A member of Boy Scout Troop 18, he earned his Eagle Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam war, he served from Dec. 29, 1967 until Nov. 14, 1969. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class.
He worked as a part - time roofer and carpenter with his father.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, from the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church.
Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery.

Erna E. Heinold
BOLTON - Erna E. (Fateiger) Heinold, 73, of 9 Sargent Rd., a retired secretary, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Worcester, after an illness.
Among her survivors she leaves a sister, Betty Andrews, of Athol.

ORANGE - Funeral services for Norma G. (Healy) Sibley, 78, of 519 East River St., were held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 in the Fiske Funeral Home, Athol, with the Rev. Mark Bariloni, pastor of the Athol - Orange Baptist Church officiating, and Rev. Ralph Brown, associate pastor, co - officiating. The organist was Stephanie Parker.
Burial was in Highland Cemetery Athol. Bearers were Nathan Euvrard, Francis Charest III, Richard Ramsay, Christopher Ramsay, Amanda Haeg and Steven Madierous.
Mrs. Mealand, 'The Mitten Lady,' Dies
NEW SALEM - Laura H. (Haskins) Mealand, 83, of 30 Petersham Rd., died Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
Born on Oct. 3, 1917 in N.H., Claire McGinnis of New Salem and Marjorie McGinnis of New Salem; 16 great - grandchildren; many nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Elmer and Charles Haskins, both of whom died in 1996.
A memorial service will be held in the South Athol United Methodist Church at a later date to be announced. Pastor Nancy Collins will officiate.
