Area Soloist and Volunteer
ATHOL - D. Janice (Brook) Hayden, 81, of 67 Gibson Rd., Orleans, formerly of Athol, passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003 at the Epoch Senior Health Care of Brewster.
She was born on Feb. 14, 1922 in Derby Line, Vt., the daughter of Pierce and Claire May (Stone) Brook. Mrs. Hayden moved to Athol during her grade school years and graduated from Athol High School in 1940. She lived in Athol for many years moving to Orleans in 1981.
Following graduation she was employed at the L.S. Starrett Company in Athol in their payroll department. She continued to work there until her marriage to James Hayden in 1948.
She was known to many area residents for her beautiful soprano singing voice, having been the soloist at the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church for many years. She also participated with other area church choirs, sang with local minstrel and variety shows and was the female soloist with the area's Athol Singing Men.
In addition to her singing talents, she was a tireless volunteer worker for many charities and social groups in Athol and Orleans, including eye and ear tests for local schools, secretary for the Orleans Council on Aging, Cub Scout Den Mother and bowling league secretary. She also assisted with donation drives for the American Cancer Society, Red Cross blood donations, and helped with many activities at the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hayden also enjoyed bowling, golf, and traveling with her family and friends. Her other pastimes included reading, needlepoint and gardening.
She leaves her husband of 54 years, James Hayden, and a son James Hayden and his wife Nancy of Guilford, Conn. She was predeceased brother, Roger S. Brook.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. R. Lee Smith, pastor and Rev. Freda Maier of Athol officiating.
Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery and calling hours will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church Living Memorial Fund, 40 Island St., Athol, MA 01331.
Kennedy Services
ORANGE - A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, Feb. 15 at St. Mary's Church for Winifred L. (Clark) Kennedy, 85, of 32 Daniel Shays Hwy., who died on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 in the Apple Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ayer. The Rev. Fr. William Lunney officiated along with Deacon Joseph Bucci. Janet Paoletti was the organist and Theresa Bergquist was the cantor.
Interment will be in the spring in South Cemetery, Orange. The pallbearers were: Paul Morin, Douglas Morin, Clayton Morin, Harry Richard, Kenneth Burrill and Ryan Donahue. A reception was held at Herrick's Tavern on 202.
Witty's Funeral Home of Orange directied the arrangements.
Louise E. Thayer
PETERSHAM - Louise E. (King) Thayer, 89, of 15 West St., died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, in the Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Fiske Funeral Home 1356 Main St., Athol, are incomplete.
Marilyn A. Hume
Formerly Of Orange
SMYRNA, Del. - Marilyn A. Hume of Smyrna died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002 in her home.
She was born on Aug. 7, 1930 in Vernon Center, N.H., at Witty's Funeral Home, Orange, with the Rev. Vance E. Frank officiating. Deborah Kent was the organist and Pamela Sweeney was the soloist. A reception followed at the Orange Historical Society. Private interment was held in Warwick Center Cemetery.

Ronald A. Huard Sr.
Auto Mechanic
ATHOL - Ronald A. Huard Sr., 58, of Colorado Springs, Massachusetts National Guard from 1962 until 1968.
An auto mechanic most of his life, he worked for Goodyear Tire Company in Colorado for the past several years. In Athol, he owned and operated Ron's Exxon during the 1970's and later worked at the former Tedford Motors. Prior to his work in auto mechanics he was employed by Peterson's Dairy and Cushman's Bakery.
An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and auto mechanics.
He leaves a son, Ronald A. Huard Jr. of N.H., John C. Durkee of Attleboro; a sister, Marion Adams of Athol; seven grandchildren, three great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His wife of 59 years, Mary J. (Bevis) Durkee who died in 1998, predeceased him. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, at 10 a.m. in Highland Cemetery, Athol with the Rev. Dr. R. Lee Smith, pastor of the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, officiating.
