Herbert M. Johnson
Orange Peals Outfielder
ORANGE - Herbert M. "Buzz" Johnson Jr., 86, of 143 Cheney St., died on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002 in the Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
Born in Orange, on Nov. 18, 1916, a son of Herbert M. and Lillian (Lord) Johnson, he lived here most of his life and had resided at the Providence Cliff House, Athol, for the past three years.
A graduate of Orange High School in 1934 and the Baypath Institute, Springfield, in 1936, upon graduation he began his 42 - year career at the L.S. Starrett Company, Athol, retiring in 1978.
He served with the United States Army Air Corp during World War II from 1942 until 1946 in the European Theatre.
Active in Freemasonry, he was a member of the Orange Lodge of Masons A.F & A.M., Athol Orange Commandery, 137, Crescent Chapter, Past High Priest in 1951 and a member of the Melha Temple Shrine, Springfield.
A lifelong member of the First Universalist Church, the American Legion Post 172, and was a sports fan, he played as an outfielder with the Orange Peals Baseball Team.
His wife, Arlene (Field) Johnson, died in 1979.
He leaves a brother, Richard F. Johnson of Orange; two nieces and two nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. in Witty's Funeral Home. The Rev. Ralph T. Clarke of the First Universalist church will officiate.
Burial will follow in South Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers contributions are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

ATHOL - Laura M. Duguay, 76, of 28 Morton Meadows, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Worcester, following an illness.
She leaves four brothers, Leonard "Pee Wee" Duguay of Ashland, N.H., and David B. Hall of Fredericksburg, Massachusetts State Federation of Women's Clubs.
She was a secretary of Community Concerts, general chairman of the Athol March of Dimes, a member of the Athol Historical Society and the Memorial Hospital Corporation.
She was an elected member of the Athol Board of Health and served from 1967 until her retirement in 1987. She became secretary of the Central Massachusetts Public Health Association.
She was an appointed member of the Council on Aging; she assisted in promoting the Athol - Orange Community Health Services and was a former chairman of the Advisory Council of this agency.For several years she served as a director of the Franklin County Home Care Corporation.
Her husband of 69 years, Edward H. Horrigan, who died in 2000, and her daughter, Judith Horrigan Borge, who died in 1998, predeceased her.
She leaves a son, Hugh A. Horrigan of Athol; a daughter Donna C. Horrigan of Milford; 10 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, with a Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church Park Ave., Athol.
Burial will be private.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in her memory to CARE 1320 Centre St., Suite 205, Newton Centre, MA 02159.
The Fiske Funeral Home of Athol is directing arrangements.
