Richard B. Russell

ATHOL - Richard B. Russell, 52, of 413 Main St., died on Monday, July 21, 2003 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury.
He was born in Athol on Oct. 12, 1950, the son of Norman B. and Natalie (Trenoweth) Russell. He graduated from Athol High School in 1968 and had lived here all of his life.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, worked at the Athol Table Manufacturing, the N.D. Cass Company and several furniture manufacturers in Gardner. He enjoyed music, especially playing his guitar, art, photography and visiting with his friends.
He leaves a son, Micah Mullen of Barre; his mother, Natalie Russell of Orange; a brother, Thomas J. Russell of Ware; three sisters, Patti Dodge of Athol, Sharon Deane of Orange, and Lynn Tepper of Manchester, NH; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A brother, W. Peter Russell, died in 1976.
Graveside services will be Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at Silver Lake Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. William Hobbs, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, officiating.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to: Athol Memorial Hospital Oncology Fund, 2033 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.

Winifred Baxter

ATHOL - Winifred (Manley) Baxter, 96, of Athol died Sunday, July 20, 2003, in the Quabbin Valley Healthcare.
She was born in Malden on May 10, 1907, the daughter of Henry and Winifred (Huntrodes) Baxter. She grew up in Malden and was educated in Malden. She moved to Athol in 1937.
She was employed at the Union Twist Drill Co. as a clerk for several years. She was a member of the Athol Congregational Church.
Her husband of 44 years, Chester Baxter, died in 1972. She leaves a son, William T. Baxter of South Hadley; a daughter, Dawn Duguay of Marstons Mills; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A son, Edward Baxter who died in 1996, and a daughter, Diane Baxter who died in 1997, predeceased her.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 22 at 10 a.m. in the Silver Lake Cemetery with Rev. Harold V. Lloyd, Jr., Pastor of the Athol Congregational Church, officiating.

ORANGE - Edward L. Rumrill, 79, of 107 Main St., North Orange, died Saturday, July 19, 2003 in his home after an illness.
Born in Cornish, Massachusetts and Rhode Island Antiquarian Booksellers. He worked as a toolmaker at the L.S. Starrett Company for many years until retiring in 1983. Previously he had been employed at Union Tool Company and Adell Corporation.
An enthusiastic family man, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Eunice A. "Pat" (Miner) Rumrill; a son, John Rumrill and wife, Bonnie, a daughter, Sue Ellen Rumrill, three granddaughters, Megan Rumrill, Marcy Rumrill and Christine Annable all of North Orange; a sister, Olive Brunelle of Dunnellon, Fla; several nephews and nieces.
The date and time of a memorial service and burial will be announced in August.

NEW SALEM - Graveside services were held on Saturday, July 19, 2003 in the South Cemetery, Orange, for Charles M. Wetherby, 80, of 36 North Main St., who died at home on Saturday, July 12, 2003. The Rev. James Willis of the New Salem Congregational Church officiated. The United States flag was presented by John "Spider" Smith, Department Surgeon, American Legion Post 172, to Charlie's brother, Harold Wetherby. “Taps” was performed by Dick Tandy. A reception followed at the American Legion Home in Orange.

OXFORD - Ernest P. Nelson, 94, of Pine Street, a retired furniture maker, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Sandalwood. He was born in Orange, son of Olaf and Helen (Curtis) Nelson.

WESTMINSTER - Pauline M. (Moran) Gravelle, 74, of 48 Battles Rd., formerly of Athol and Fitchburg, a retired salesclerk, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Fitchburg after a brief illness.
Ruth L. Johnstone

ATTLEBORO - Ruth L. Johnstone, 80, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2003, in a nursing home following a long illness, with members of her family around her.
She was born to Arthur and Blanche (Holton) Bisbee, Nov. 23, 1922 and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1940.
Her husband, Norman “Scotty” Johnstone died March 25, 2003. They were married in Athol July 28, 1946 and lived here until 1960 when they moved to North Attleboro with their children.
Ruth worked in the office of the Athol Gas and Electric for several years.
She is survived by two daughters, Heather McCrystal of Norton and Luanne Stauff of Attleboro; two sons, David Johnstone of Windham, Gardner after a brief illness.
A long - time resident of the Eagleville section of town, she was the daughter of Robert and Bernice (Wilbur) Bigwood Sr.
She leaves two brothers, Gordon Bigwood of Holiday, Fla., and Clinton Bigwood Sr. of Athol; three sisters, Norma Young of Rindge, N.H., Althea Kenney of Kansas, and Doris Houseman of Athol; and many nieces and nephews.
A grave side service will be held at South Cemetery on Thursday, July 17 at 10 a.m.

ATHOL - A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, July 15, at St. Francis of Assisi Church for Nellie A. (Muzzy) Young, 78, of 36 Exchange St., who died Saturday, July 12, at Leominster Hospital following an illness.
The Rev. James Callahan, associate pastor of Our Lady Immaculate Church, officiated. The organist and cantor was Theresa Gabis.
Burial followed in Gethsemane Cemetery. The bearers were Scott Hebert, Charles Petrowsky, Edward Berry, Gerard Lozier and James Hebert.
