William A. Robinson, Veteran, Family Man
ATHOL - William A. Robinson, 78, of 169 Orange St. died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at his home after a short illness.
He was born in Ware, on July 28, 1924, a son of Jason and Florence (Scott) Robinson. He attended Orange schools and the New Salem Academy.
He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army, serving with the 43rd Infantry Division in the South Pacific. He worked for the L.S. Starrett Company for 16 years, retiring in 1994. He had previously worked for the former Batchelor Automatic Heating Company for several years and at the former Eastern Star Home in Orange for 16 years.
His interests include: fly tying, woodworking, making miniature furniture, reading, gardening, hunting, fishing and he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the First Church Unitarian.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Margaret “Peg” (Robertson) Robinson; four sons, William Scott Robinson and his wife Jill, Kevin B. Robinson and his wife Angela, both of Athol, Bruce E. Robinson and his wife Denise of Royalston, David A. Robinson and his wife Linda of Elma, NY; a daughter Mary L. Coflesky and her husband John of Royalston; a brother, John Robinson and his wife Phyllis of Bedford, NH; a sister, Rachel Vittim of Phillipston; 9 grandchildren, Jason, Jared, Andrew and Jessica Robinson of Athol, Michael and David Coflesky, Steven and Katelyn Robinson of Royalston, William “Billy” Robinson of Elma, NY; two step - grandsons, Sean and Kevin Breault and one step - granddaughter, Sara Breault, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, July 10 at 2 p.m. in the Higgins - O’Connor Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Clarke, minister of the First Church Unitarian officiating. The service will be preceded by a two - hour calling time from noon to 2 p.m.
A private burial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions made to the Royalston Community School, Memorial Library Fund, c/o Paul Goodhind, principal, 96 Winchendon Rd., Royalston, MA 01368 or the Athol Royalston Sports Foundation, c/o David King, 2363 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.
Veikko R. Jarvenpaa, Highway Superintendent
ROYALSTON - Veikko R. Jarvenpaa, 82, of 4 Fernald Rd., South Royalston died Monday morning, July 7, 2003 at his residence.
He was born in South Royalston on Feb. 28,1921, the son of Ivar and Hanna (Miettinen) Jarvenpaa, grew up on the family farm and was a resident of South Royalston for most of his life.
Mr. Jarvenpaa was a heavy equipment operator for about 30 years, and was a member of Local #98 International Union of Operating Engineers in Springfield, until his retirement in 1982. During World War 2, Mr. Jarvenpaa served in the Marine Corps, with 4th Division Company A and fought in Iwo Jima, Saipan and Tinian.
After serving in the war, he became highway superintendent for the town of Royalston for several years. He was a member of Ovila Case Post #905 VFW in Oklahoma, New Jersey prior to moving to Athol in 1996.
Her husband, Charles R. Conradi, died in 1996. Mrs. Conradi was a graduate of Our Lady of the Valley High School in Newarkand was a movie enthusiast.
She is survived by one son; Charles “Chip” R. Conradi of Oakland, New Jersey; and six grandchildren. A sister, Patricia Sofield of Massachusetts Inc., 1 Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA 02346.
Arrangements are by the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home.
Rev. Arthur Sweeney
GREENFIELD - The Rev. Mr. Arthur N. Sweeney, 79, of 7 Webster St., died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 in the Franklin Medical Center.
Woodcock Services
ORANGE - Services were held on Thursday, July 3, 2003 in Witty's Funeral Home for Melvin E. Woodcock, Jr., 78, of 63 Adams St., who died on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 in the Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, following an illness.
The Rev. Vance E. Frank officiated and Donald "Spin" Ainsworth was the organist. Richard Hall was the sololist. Chris Woodcock read the eulogy. John "Spider" Smith, Dept. Surgeon of the American Legion Post 172, presented the flag to Mel's wife, Nancy.
Private burial in Jones Cemetery, Orange. The honorary pallbearers were Jason Woodcock, Timothy Woodcock, Matthew Woodcock, Megan Woodcock, Cameron Woodcock, and Emma Woodcock. A reception was held following the service at the American Legion Post 172 on Whitney Street.
Witty's Funeral Home, Orange, directed the arrangements.
