Long - Time Resident
SO. ROYALSTON - Elli M. (Rantala) Karjalainen, 80, formerly of Richmond Court, So. Royalston, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 in the Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
Her husband of 34 years, Veikko Karjalainen, died in 1986.
She was born in Barkaus, Finland on Oct. 12, 1922, and had resided in South Royalston for 50 years.
Mrs. Karjalainen attended the Higher Ground Ministries in Gardner.
She leaves a son, Mark T. Karjalainen of South Royalston and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 29. 2003 at 1:30 p.m. in the Snow - Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central St., Winchendon.
Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery, South Royalston.
A calling hour will be held in the funeral home on Monday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.

FLORIDA - Arthur Christian Lehman Sr., 75, of 8 Blackstone Rd., died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at the North Adams Regional Hospital.
Virginia S. Heath
Domestic Helper
PHILLIPSTON - Virginia (Smallwood) Heath, 83, of 345 State Rd., died Tuesday evening, Sept. 23, 2003 in the Athol Memorial Hospital, Athol.
She was born in Fairfax, Vir. on Feb. 22,1920, the daughter of Newton and Ruth (Tharpe) Smallwood and had been a resident of Phillipston for over 40 years.
Mrs. Heath was a domestic helper for the late Atty. Eugene Turcotte and sold Avon Products for a short time. A homemaker, she enjoyed traveling.
Her husband of 52 years, Harold A. Heath, died in 1993. She leaves a son, John A. Heath of Phillipston; two daughters, Shirley M. Varnum of Athol and Jean E. Sund of Phillipston, with whom she lived; a sister, Elizabeth Chapman of Templeton, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. Two brothers, John T. Smallwood and William Smallwood, as well as three sisters, Hazel Tatro, Mabel Flowers and Mae Howe, predeceased her.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Templeton.
There are no calling hours.

Elizabeth Provencher
102 Years Old
GARDNER - Elizabeth (Thibault) (Robichaud) Provencher, 102, of 125 Connors St., died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 in the Leo P. LaChance Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, following an illness.
Born in Gardner State Hospital for several years until retiring in 1963.
She was a member of the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church and its Ladies of St. Anne Society.
Her first husband, Emile Robichaud, died in 1949. Her husband, Clinton Provencher, died in 1959.
She leaves a son, Maurice E. Robichaud of Athol; a daughter, Helen Cormier of Gardner; six grandchildren, 14 great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St.
Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Raymond F. Goguen Sr.
Formerly Of Athol
ATHOL - Raymond F. Goguen, Sr., 88, of Barefoot Bay, FL, formerly of Enfield, and Athol, beloved husband of 31 years of Ann Marie (Dwyer) Goguen, entered into eternal peace Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at the Sebastian River Medical Center in Florida.
During WWII, he was employed by the U.S. Government at Lincoln Labs at MIT developing electronics for U.S. Defense and later was employed at Pratt & Whitney. He retired from American Bosch in 1979.
He was a former member of the Knight’s of Columbus. Ray enjoyed photography and fishing. In Florida, he was a member of St. Luke’s Parish, and a member of the Irish Club and the New England Club.
Besides his wife, Ray is survived by four sons, Raymond Goguen, Jr. and his wife Marianne of Stafford Springs, CT, Paul Goguen and his wife Linda, Kenneth Goguen, and Philip Goguen and his wife Pamela all of Enfield; a daughter, Jean Dzialo and her husband Gregory of Enfield; 14 grandchildren; a great grandson; five step - children, Marianne Campbell and her husband Robert of Agawam, Michael McCarthy of Westfield, Margaret McCarthy and her husband Dave Jaworski of Storrs, CT, Thomas McCarthy and his wife Melanie Sarna of Southhampton, Martha McCarthy and her husband Thomas Tilton of Waterville, ME. Ray was predeceased by his first wife Mary (Pedrazzi) Goguen, and six brothers.
Family and friends will gather Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at the Leete - Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South rd., Enfield, CT for a procession to St. Bernard Church for a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial.
Committal will follow at Silver Lake Cemetery in Athol.
Ray’s family will receive relatives and friends at the Leete - Stevens Enfield Chapels Friday 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ray’s memory may be made to the Weinberg Center, Ron Beatty Blvd., Micco, FL 32976.

GARDNER - Everlyn M. (Crossman) Sanden, 86, formerly of 64 Prospect St., died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 in the Baldwinville Nursing Home.

PHILLIPSTON - Services for Lois N. (Paige) Dunbar, 83, of 185 Ward Hill Rd., were held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at the Central Congregational Church of New Salem with the Rev. Stanly Dahlman, pastor emeritus, officiating, with Janet Craft as the organist. Burial followed in Center Cemetery and a reception was held in fellowship hall.
The Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home directed arrangements.
