CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Doris Louise Newcomb, 51, of Charles Town, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, at Western Maryland Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born June 21, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Alonza S. and Katherine Fritts Welch.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Kabletown United Methodist Church, Kabletown, W.Va.
She was a former member and officer of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1048, Charles Town.
She is survived by one son, James S. Newcomb of Kearneysville, W.Va.; three sisters, Martha L. Whisner and Hope Welch, both of Charles Town, and Peggy J. Adrian of Inwood, W.Va.; and one granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jody Lynn Newcomb.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Melissa Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kathryn C. Zimmerman
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Kathryn C. Zimmerman, 81, of 820 A Menno Village in Chambersburg, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, at her home.
Born Sept. 27, 1915, in Lebanon, Pa., she was the daughter of the late J. Anson and Claire Hottenstein Wilhelm.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard P. Zimmerman, who died Feb. 6, 1992.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg, where she was a member of the church choir and the Good News Bible Class.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Lebanon; Martha Custis Chapter, Order of Eastern Star 342 of Chambersburg; and a life member of Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at Menno Haven Inc. in Chambersburg for eight years.
She also was an avid golfer and had been the past Women's Golf Champion at Chambersburg Country Club.
She is survived by three sons, Richard A. Zimmerman of Hershey, Pa., Edward C. Zimmerman and Peter C. Zimmerman, both of Chambersburg; one sister, Dorothy Steckbeck of Asbury Park, N.J.; one brother, James A. Wilhelm of Lebanon; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred McConnell.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg. The Rev. William Brown and the Rev. Vernon D. Isner will officiate.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family at Parklawns Memorial Gardens.
There will be no viewing.

Geoffrey R. Anson
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Geoffrey Rupert Anson, 68, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Jan. 28, 1929, in South Ascot, England, he was the son of the late Rupert and Marion Ruthven Emma Halliday Anson.
He was educated at Lambrook School, Dartmouth Naval College, and graduated from Sandhurst Military Academy as a second lieutenant.
He was commissioned to the Fourth Queens Own Hussars and served in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Hohne, Germany.
He emigrated to Canada in 1952 and worked for A.V. Rowe in Toronto. He joined the Governor General's Horse Guards.
He also was employed at Roddis Lumber and Veneer of Canada. Most recently, he was employed at Besse Forest Products in Gladstone, Mich., in log procurement and custom cutting.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Martinsburg.
He played rugby for the Toronto Barbarians and caddied for the World Championship Golf Tournament in Chicago. In 1954, he boxed in Maple Leaf Gardens in the Jack Dempsey White Hope Tournament.
He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce; Rotary Club of Presque Isle, Maine; and the Sault Ste. Marie 48th Highlanders. He was president of the Saute Ste. Marie Golf and Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Verna Grace Hall Anson, whom he married in 1957; one daughter, Jennifer Marion Anson of Spencer, Iowa; two sons, George Rupert Anson of Thornborough, England, and Christopher Leonard Anson of Phoenix; two sisters, Rosemary Coombe of Hinton, St. George, and Felicity Woodhouse of Shepherds, England; one brother, Col. T.P. Anson of Hardwick, England; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Edward Peter Anson.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Martinsburg. The Rev. Jack T. Sudor Jr. will officiate. Burial will be private.

Mary Alice Wilson, 91, of 1738 Edgewood Hills Circle, Hagerstown, died Friday, June 6, 1997, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.
She also is survived by a brother Ben F. Mowry of Worthington, Ohio.

Charlotte I. Wilkinson
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Charlotte I. Wilkinson, 91, of Shepherdstown, died Monday, June 2, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Aug. 10, 1905, in Sparland, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary Siebold Bussell.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter J. Wilkinson.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sparland.
She is survived by one son, James L. Wilkinson of Shepherdstown with whom she resided; two grandchildren, David James Wilkinson and Danielle Whitney Wilkinson; and one great-granddaughter, Sidnie Lynn Wilkinson.
She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. She is the last of her immediate family.
Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Sparland. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin, Ill.

Mary L. Longnecker
Mary L. Longnecker, 94, of 24 Broadway, Hagerstown, died Friday, June 6, 1997, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.
Born Dec. 6, 1902, in Dry Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Sarah J. Baker Rowe.
Her husband, Russell J. Longnecker, died in 1956.
She retired from wiring department No. 167 of Fairchild Aircraft.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
She also was a member of United Auto Workers Union Local 842.
She is survived by one son, Allen J. Longnecker of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, corner of Randolph and Potomac streets. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 12 to 1 p.m.
Harley W. Jennelle
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Harley Wade Jennelle, infant son of Zane D. and Ann-Marie Starkey Jennelle Jr. of Hedgesville, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.
He was born June 5, 1997, in Martinsburg.
In addition to his parents he is survived by one sister, Krystal Jennelle at home; maternal grandparents, Roger K. Starkey of Stafford, Va., and Evelyn M. Clausen of Dale City, Va.
Services and burial are private and arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg.
Robert F. Carter
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert Franklin Carter, 63, of 2076 Gomer Road, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at his home.
Born Sept. 30, 1933, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Olive Woodring Carter Sharar of Chambersburg, and the late Howard Carter.
He was a 1951 graduate of Chambersburg High School.
He was employed by Penn Central as a block operator from 1956 to 1981.
He was a scout for the Baltimore Orioles from 1973 to 1981 and the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1981 to 1987. He had served as the Kansas City Royals Regional Supervisor Scout since 1987.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1956.
He was a member of St. James United Brethren Church, Warm Spring Road, in Chambersburg, and a member of the trustee board when the church was built.
He also was a member of Detrich-Brechbill Post 612 American Legion, St. Thomas, Pa.; Harry D. Zeigler Post 6319, Greencastle; Chambersburg Rod and Gun Club; Maryland Professional Baseball Association; Old Timers Baseball Association of Maryland; and Mid-Atlantic Baseball Scouting Association.
In 1990, he was elected to the American Legion Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1992 he was awarded the Ewing M. Kauffman Award in Scouting by the Kansas City Royals.
He managed and coached the following teams: St. James United Brethren Church Fast Pitch Softball Team, King Street United Brethren Church Fast Pitch Softball Team, Chambersburg Spartans Tri-County League, South Hamilton Little League, South Hamilton Nellie Fox Youth League, and St. Thomas American Legion Baseball Team.
He was an avid hunter.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mildred L. Webber Carter, whom he married Aug. 21, 1954; three sons, Arthur Franklin Carter of El Paso, Texas, Robert Dean Carter of Chambersburg, and Dennis Ray Carter of Fort Ashby, W.Va.; one brother, Richard Sharar of Fort Myers, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at King Street United Brethren Church, 172 E. King St., Chambersburg. The Rev. Joel L. Christman and the Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery in Chambersburg, with military graveside services conducted by members of Detrich-Brechbill Post 612 American Legion in St. Thomas.
A viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

Betty M. Lohmeyer
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Betty Mae Lohmeyer, 70, of Charles Town, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 22, 1927, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Erlo and Mary Jacobs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Monroe Lohmeyer, who died Dec. 13, 1991.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy L. Baker of Charles Town; one son, Howard LeRoy Townsley Jr. of Charles Town; one sister; one brother, Joseph Erlo Jr. of Florida; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Allen Wayne Lohmeyer and Charles M. Lohmeyer Jr.; and one sister.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Melvin Strider Colonial Funeral Home. The Rev. Arthur Beahm will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.

Thomas R. Rhodes
Thomas Richard Rhodes, 52, of 205 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, died Monday, June 2, 1997, at home.
Born March 10, 1945, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Flo A. Geyer Rhodes of Hagerstown, and the late Thomas L. Rhodes.
He graduated from Williamsport High School with the class of 1964.
He was last employed as an engineering technician by Rohr Industries, Hagerstown.
He was a member of Downsville Church of the Brethren, Downsville.
He was an amateur radio operator.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Karen A. Bryan of Clear Spring; one son, Andrew C. Rhodes of Williamsport; and one grandson, Andrew P. Bryan of Clear Spring.
Services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. Roger K. Myers will officiate.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Charles G. Munson, who died Oct. 18, 1986.
She was formerly employed at Londtontown Corp. in Hancock.
She was a member of Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church in Hancock.
She also was a member of the Auto Racing Club in Hagerstown.
She is survived by her second husband Joseph R. Gardner, whom she married Dec. 4, 1988; three sons, Donald Lee Munson of Hagerstown, John Charles Munson of Hedgesville, W.Va. and Christopher Wade Munson of Warfordsburg; four step-daughters, Shari L.Garvin and Marcel Magruder both of Hagerstown, Charell Seger of Martinsburg, W. Va. and Evette Piper of Williamsport; one step-son, R. J. Gardner of Hagerstown, one sister Ann Lea Scuffins of Hagerstown; one brother Roy Mills of Warfordsburg and eleven grandchildren;
She was preceded in death by one son, Charles William Munson and two brothers, Maurice Mills and Benjamin Mills.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church in Hancock. The Rev. Kenneth D. Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

SANDY HOOK, Md. - John Irvin Ashbaugh, 62, of Sandy Hook, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at his residence.
Born Aug. 28, 1934 in Loudoun County, Va., he was the son of the late Robert Roosevelt and Elizabeth Fleming Ashbaugh.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joan Marie Deener Ashbaugh who died in 1983.
He was a retired janitor at the National Geographic Society in Gaithersburg, Md.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1136, and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1582 of Brunswick, Md.
He is survived by one daughter, Gail E. Tribby of Sandy Hook; one sister Romona Weddle of Keymar, Md.; four grandchildren, Rosanna Wright of Middletown, Va., John R. Ashbaugh, Jr. of Boonsboro, Crystal Ashbaugh and Misty Tribby both of Sandy Hook; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, John R. Ashbaugh Sr.; one sister Dorothy Moxley, and two brothers Buddy Ashbaugh and Earl Ashbaugh.
Services will be held Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. Paul D. Kemp will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery in Brownsville.

SILVER SPRING, Md. - Sarah M. Shewbridge, 79, of Silver Spring, died Friday, June 6, 1997, in the Medlantic Manor Nursing Home in Layhill, Silver Spring.
Born March 6, 1918 in Martinsburg, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late John Andrew Chrisman and Sarah Tinsman Chrisman Clark.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles C. Shewbridge.
She retired after twenty years of service with the U.S. Government.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Beverly Kay Shewbridge of Silver Spring; and two sisters, Elsie Kraus of Mountain Top, Pa., and Sadie Naylor of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ursula Chrisman and Hattie Stanley, and one brother, John A. Chrisman.
Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, in Martinsburg. The Rev. Malcolm L. Cadd will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasasnt View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg.

Isabelle P. E. Bush
BETHESDA, Md. - Isabelle Payne Engle Bush, 91, of Carriage Hill Nursing Home and formerly of Berkeley County, W. Va. died Thursday, June 5, 1997, in the nursing home after a long illness.
Born April 2, 1906, in Darkesville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Orrick Cunningham Payne and Gertrude Hammond Potter Payne.
She was preceded in death by her first husband John Thomas Engle, and her second husband Stuart D. Bush who died in 1990.
She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School and Longwood College, in Farmville, Va.
She taught public school in West Virginia and Maryland and in 1930 opened a private kindergarten in Winchester, Va. After moving to Washington in 1941 she was employed as an information specialist with the Social Security Administration until her retirement in 1972.
She was a member of St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Washington.
She was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority of Longwood College in Farmville.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Engle Huguely of Bethesda, Md. and Nancee Engle Miller of Guilderland, N.Y.; six grandchildren, George Huguely, II., Lynda H. Camalier, William Miller, Kimberly M. Zapolski, Matthew Miller and David Miller; nine great-grandchildren; and one nephew.
Private services will be held Monday with the Rev. Jack T. Sutor, Jr. officiating.

Elizabeth M. Grimes
MADISON, N.J. - Elizabeth Merrell Grimes, 90, of Madison, died Friday, June 6, 1997 at King James Care Center after a long illness.
Born Feb. 7, 1907, in Centerville, Md. , she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Byron J. Grimes.
She was raised in Centerville, and later lived in Eastern Shore and Hagerstown.
She held a degree in humanities from Wilson College in Pennsylvania, and a masters degree from Columbia University.
She taught for many years at the high school in Glen Ridge, N.J.
She was an active member of the American Association of University Women in Madison, a member of the Thursday Morning Group and The Friends of the Madison Public Library.
She is survived by a nephew Byron J. Grimes, of Richmond and his family of four children.
Services will be private with a committal service in Light Street, Pa.

Harrison Warfield, 88, of 200 B Taylor Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown.
Born March 14, 1909, in Laytonville, Md., he was the son of the late George and Elsie Johnson Warfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie L. Warfield, in 1981.
He had resided in the Washington, D.C., area and was a self-employed chauffeur.
He was active in the Methodist church.
He is survived by one sister, Elsie W. Bushrod of Washington, D.C.; nieces, nephew and cousins.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Leroy Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
