Strother Washington
Strother Lee Washington Sr., 90, of Crofton and formerly of Culpeper County, Va., died of respiratory arrest Feb. 21, 2002 at the Crofton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Washington was born in Rappahannock County, Va., and had lived in Crofton with his son and family for the past five years.
A carpenter, he enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid baseball fan. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Clarksburg, Va., where he was a trustee and deacon.
He served in the Army during World War II and was honorably discharged on Oct. 12, 1943.
His wife, Peachie "Pete" Frances Wright Washington, died Sept. 4, 2001.
Surviving are four sons, Douglas Carter of Fredericksburg, Va., Carroll Lee Carter of Culpeper, Simuel E. Washington of Viewtown, Va., and Strother L. Washington Jr. of Crofton; four daughters, Arlene C. Frye of Sperryville, Va., Sallie W. Braxton of Spotsylvania, Va., Thelma M. Turner of Merrillville, Ind., and Alice E. Robinson of Culpeper; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice I. Washington of Viewtown; and two brothers, Louis B. Washington of Arlington, Va., and Hugh R. Washington of Culpeper.
Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Bennett Funeral Home, 515 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va., and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Thompson Funeral Home in Culpeper.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Nazareth Baptist Church in Boston, Va., with burial in the church cemetery.
Rachel Blake
Rachel Alverta Blake, 69, of Annapolis, died Feb. 20, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Miss Blake was born Nov. 9, 1932, in Davidsonville, and attended Anne Arundel County public schools. She was a cashier at the National Security Agency at Fort George G. Meade.
Miss Blake was a member of Union Memorial United Methodist Church where she was an usher in her youth. She also was an affiliate member of Mount Olive A.M.E. Church in Annapolis.
Her interests included bowling, playing bingo, card games and cooking, helping to raise her great-nieces and great-nephews and going to church.
Surviving are her stepmother, Minnie E. Blake of Owensville, and several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at Union Memorial United Methodist Church in Davidsonville, with a Christian wake at 10:30 a.m. followed by the services at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
Dolphin Davis
Dolphin "Dolph" Alston Davis Jr., 81, of Chester, died Feb. 24, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The cause of death was not available.
Born in Baltimore on Feb. 17, 1921, Mr. Davis was the son of the late Dolphin A. and Virginia Gibbs Davis.
He graduated from The Park School and attended Drexel University and Johns Hopkins University. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps reserves as a lieutenant colonel. Later he was a wing commander for the Civil Air Patrol in Maryland.
He worked with his father's company, Deluca Davis Construction, a home and business construction company. Later he worked for the state of Maryland as a consultant on bridges and highways.
He was involved in the development several communities in Maryland, including Queen's Landing in Chester. He retired in 1995.
He was a 30-year member of the Baltimore Yacht Club, past commander of Sue Island Power Squadron and a member of the Kent Island Yacht Club, the Living Water Lutheran Church in Stevensville and the Air Force Association.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Mickley Davis, whom he married
Nov. 24, 1990; two sons, Dolphin Alston Davis V of Towson and Peter S. Davis of Hibbing, Minn.; two daughters, Rosemary Koontz and Emily Mercer, both of Baltimore; one stepdaughter, Elaine Mickley-Whewell of Chester; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester where the funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow in Loudon Park cemetery in Baltimore.

Katherine Gesson
Katherine D. "Kay" Gesson, 93, a resident of Flushing, N.Y., for 51 years and previously of Westchester, N.Y., died of natural causes Feb. 23, 2002 at Heritage Harbour Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Annapolis.
Mrs. Gesson was born in Elmsford, N.Y., on Jan. 23 1909. She devoted her life to being a full-time mother and homemker.
Mrs. Gesson enjoyed telling the story of her father being a personal valet to the late Joseph Kennedy during his Westchester days. She also remembered fondly her work at the Happiness Candy Shoppe in Elmsford when she was young.
Mrs. Gesson was a member of the Good Citizenship League of Flushing for more than 40 years where she served as tea chairman for more than 10 years. She was also a member of the Women's Club of Peekskill and Cortlandt, N.Y., for more than 50 years. She volunteered at the Bowne Historical House for many years in Flushing.
Mrs. Gesson enjoyed gardening, antiquing and was an avid reader.
In 1927 she was married
to William J. Gesson who died in 1980.
Surviving are her son, John Gesson of California; two daughters, Kay Fowler of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Marilyn Mendez of Annapolis; her sister Faye Sueller of Elmford; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two children, William Gesson and Marie Broderick, and one grandchild, Kathy Fowler.
A funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the small chapel at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave. in Davidsonville. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at at St. Francis Chapel, Gate of Heaven cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral and Memorial Care of Annapolis.

Robert King Sr.
Robert Joseph "Bobby" King Sr., 43, died of natural causes Feb. 22, 2002 at his home in Crownsville.
Mr. King, the son of the late Roy Odom King and Rosemary Beeman King Britton, was born in Baltimore on July 22, 1958.
Mr. King was employed by Best Buy for the past seven years as a truck driver.
He was a member of the Ridgerunner Five. He enjoyed landscaping, fishing, crabbing, bowling, NASCAR racing, hiking, backpacking and carpentry.
Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Jane Tate Parmentier King; two sons, Joshua Galante and Joseph King of Crownsville; one daughter, Sarah King of Crownsville; and his sister, Joyce Smith of Severn.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Singleton Funeral Home, 1 Second Ave. SW in Glen Burnie, where the funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow at Crestlawn cemetery in Marriottsville.
Nellie Sears
Nellie Louise "Gran" Sears, 84, a 52-year resident of Glen Isle in Riva and previously of Rockville, Va., died of lung cancer Feb. 24, 2002 at her home after a month-long illness.
A high school graduate, Mrs. Sears was born in Rockvillle, Va., on Aug. 28, 1917. She was employed by the former Safeway on West Steet in the meat department until her retirement in 1971.
Mrs. Sears received an achievement award as the oldest surviving breast cancer patient.
She enjoyed bingo, yard sales and yahtzee.
In 1962 she married
George Sears who died in 1970.
Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Jean Turner of Gambrills and Ethel Louise "Sis" Chase of Glen Isle in Riva; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.
