Anthony Blades
Anthony Edward "Tony" Blades, owner of a Kent Island insurance company, died March 21, 2002 at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. He was 61.
Born in Fallston, Mr. Blades graduated from City College in Baltimore and attended Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. He received a master of education degree from the University of Louisville.
He taught science at Chesapeake High School for many years until the early 1980s. In 1975, he opened his own insurance agency, Blades & Associates Insurance, Inc. in Chester. He planned on retiring this spring.
He was a member of the Kent Island Lions Club.
Survivors include his mother, Gertrude Turner Blades of Fallston; two daughters, Janice Blades of Ambler, Pa., and Karen Blades of Houston, Texas; and two sisters, Elaine Dryden of Fallston and Joyce Bryant of New England.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester.
Ruby Stevens
Ruby Trott Stevens, 82, a longtime resident of Lothian, died March 22, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born in Shady Side, Mrs. Stevens attended Fleet Business School and the University of Maryland.
She taught at the former Sunny Acres Special School in Annapolis and then worked as a secretary with the Anne Arundel County Board of Education. She retired in 1978.
She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church of Shady Side.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Raymond R. Stevens Sr.; two sons, Raymond R. Stevens Jr. and Robert Byron Stevens, both of Lothian; one daughter, Mary Beth Chaney of Lothian; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater where the funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday.
Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial cemetery in Annapolis.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1840 York Road, Suite M, Timonium, MD 21093.
Everett Allen Jr.
Everett "Al" Allen Jr., 60, of Odenton, formerly of Annapolis, died March 22, 2002 at Water Reed Army Medical Center in Washington after a short illness.
Mr. Allen was born in Cash, Ark., and graduated from Cash High School in 1959.
He served 20 years in the Air Force as a master sergeant, stationed in Pakistan, Italy, England and Fort Meade, before retiring in 1979.
He had worked as a postal carrier in Glen Burnie since 1981.
Mr. Allen was interested in Native American artifacts. A handyman, he enjoyed working on cars and computers and refinishing furniture. He was also involved in genealogical research.
Surviving is his wife of 37 years, Joan Allen; two sons, Russell Everett Allen of Glen Burnie and Christopher Charles Allen of Odenton; two daughters, Terri Marshall of Palmyra, Va., and Rachel Hines of Baltimore; three sisters, Barbara Jones and Sue Allen of Cash and Sandy Powell of Jonesboro, Ark.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road, Gambrills. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

Elizabeth Birch
A Mass of Christian burial was held today at St. Francis Catholic Church in Kilmarnock, Va., for Elizabeth "Betty" Hart Birch, 92, of Kilmarnock, who died March 23, 2002.
Mrs. Birch served as postmaster in Crownsville from 1941 until her retirement in 1969.
She was born in Frostburg and graduated from Frostburg State Teachers College in 1930. She moved to St. Mary's County, where she taught school in Ridge for six years.
She married
Paul Raymond Birch in 1936, and the couple moved to Crownsville in 1938.
Mrs. Birch was a civic leader in Crownsville and a member of the South Shore Health Association, serving as an officer for many years.
She was a member of the National League of Postmasters and served as secretary of the Maryland branch for three years.
She was a former member of Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, where she was active in the Altar Society and served as an organist for 10 years.
At St. Francis Catholic Church, she was the lead organist and also did flower arrangements and took care of the altar linens for many years.
She enjoyed playing the organ at home as well and composed many songs, several of which were copyrighted.
She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, oil painting, fishing and boating.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jeanne Smith of Crownsville and Elizabeth Anita Robertson of Kilmarnock; eight grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Her infant son, Paul Raymond Birch Jr., died in 1940. Her husband died in 1977 and her twin sister, Billey Hart, in 1996.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock.

Edith Johnson
Edith Elizabeth "Edie" Johnson, 71, of Severna Park, formerly of Browns Woods in Annapolis, died March 22, 2002 of multiple myeloma at the home of her cousin Edith Magruder in Pasadena.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Annapolis and attended county public schools, graduating in 1948 from the former Wiley H. Bates High School. She attended Morgan State University for one year and the Apex Cosmetology School for one year.
In the late 1980s, she worked for the Maryland Division of Transportation.
She was a member of Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church. Primarily a homemaker, she loved sewing, crafts and traveling.
Her husband of 39 years, James S. Johnson, died in 1995.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Jones of Hanover and Mitchell Jones of Edgewater; and three grandchildren. Her brother, Kermit Johnson, preceded her in death.
All services will be private. Arrangements were made by Reese and Sons Mortuary of Annapolis.
