MARIE E. SKIPPER
Marie E. Skipper, 82, Oakland, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at her home.
Born June 6, 1924, in Tucker County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late John W. and Emma V. (Ashby) DeWitt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clester B. Skipper; two sisters, E. Loretta Sines and Peggy McCartney; and two brothers, Harold DeWitt and Stanley DeWitt.
She was a member of the Crellin Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Sherry L. Skipper, Oakland; one son, the Rev. William C. Skipper, Oakland; two sisters, Betty L. Martin, Oakland, and Wanda C. Steiding, Hagerstown; two brothers, J. Robert De-Witt and Clifford C. DeWitt, both of Oakland; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be received Wednesday, Nov. 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland.
A service will be held at the Crellin Assembly of God Church on Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Bruce Craig and Rev. Gail Hixon officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Friend Cemetery.
GRACE ROSS
Grace Ross, 80, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Born on March 19, 1926, in Deer Park, she was a daughter of the late George and Wilma Ours. She was also preceded in death by receded in death by her husband, Clyde Ross.
She is survived by one sister, Doris Shillingburg of Mtn. Lake Park; one daughter, Delores (John) Harry; and three grandsons, Tim, Mike, and Steve Harry of Columbus.
Grace was a successful business woman, an avid reader and crossword puzzle fan. She was also very talented with all types of needlework.
In her retirement years Grace gave many hours of volunteer service to Garrett County Memorial Hospital, the Humane Society, and the Nearly New Thrift Shop at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Grace's memory to any of the above mentioned organizations.
HAROLD M. BROWN
Harold M. Brown, 72, of Baltimore died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at his home.
Born April 16, 1934, in Braxton County, W.Va., he was a son of the late Thurman Isaac and Mae Belle (Allen) Brown.
Mr. Brown was a member of Patterson Park Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a retired kiln controller for Locke Insulators, Baltimore.
Surviving him are his wife, Joyce (Swauger) Brown, formerly of Grantsville; three sons, John Brown and wife Mary, Baltimore, Thomas Brown and wife Margaret, Washington, Pa., and Homer Brown and wife Kathleen, West Finley, Pa.; two daughters, Judy Kowalczyk and husband Rodney, Baltimore, and Mary Cirri and husband Frank, Canonsburg, Pa.; two brothers, George D. Brown, Olympia, Wash., and Ralph F. Brown, Baltimore; three sisters, Ruby Bee, Orlando, W.Va., Daisy Carrizales, San Benito, Texas, and Angela Diaz, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Haley, Robert, Nicholas and Christopher Brown, Sarah Wells, and Don and Christine Kowalczyk; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted on Monday, Feb. 12, with the Rev. Rick High officiating.
Interment was in Bittinger Cemetery, where graveside military rites were accorded by Grantsville Post 214, American Legion.

PETER P CARDARO
Peter P. Cardaro, 85, of Moose Creek, Alaska, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at his home.
Born Dec. 28, 1921, in Kitzmiller, he was a son of the late Carl and Cindy (Pratt) Cardaro. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Rose Vauken of LaVale; and brother Thomas Cardaro, Charles Town, W.Va.
After graduating from Kitzmiller High School in 1939, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force, where he spent the next 24 years before retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1963 as a senior master sergeant.
He was with the first AAF Group to go overseas after war was declared in 1941, seeing action in the CBI (China-Burma-India Theater of Operation). He became a highly decorated flyer of World War II and Korea. Among his many decorations are the Silver Star, Distinquished Flying Cross, Air Medal with clusters and the Air Force Commendation medal. During his career, he flew over 13,500 hours in transitioning from B-17s to becoming flight engineer on B-29s, WB-50s, B-36s and RB-57s.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1963, he became a successful businessman in the Moose Creek area.
A memorial service was held at the North Pole VFW on Monday, Jan. 29.
He is survived by his wife Barbara of Moose Creek; one brother, Charles Cardaro, of Hampton Roads, Va.; one sister, Inez Foley of Annapolis; one stepdaughter, Rita Outler of Fla.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At his request, his body was cremated, and his remains will be shipped back to Kitzmiller for burial along side his parents.
A memorial service is planned for a later date.
WILLIAM H. SMITH JR.
William H. Smith Jr., 84, of Romney, W.Va., and formerly of Luke and Keyser, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 9, 2007, at Dawn View Manor Nursing Home, Fort Ashby.
Born Dec. 5, 1922, in Garrett County, he was the son of the late William H. Smith Sr. and Nora Laverne (Beckman) Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillian L. (Evans) Smith, in 2003, and an infant son.
He was a World War II veteran, having served as a member of the 3rd Marine Division of the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the division during the invasion of Iwo Jima, serving in active duty from 1942 to 1945.
He worked for Mead-Westvaco for 44 years. He began work in 1941 as a guard in the wood yard when the company was known as West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company.
Following his discharge from the United States Marine Corps. in 1945, he returned to West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company as a truck driver. He retired as an area maintenance supervisor in the wood yard.
He had 65 years of service with the Luke Volunteer Fire Company, serving as chief.
He also served as a member of the Bloomington Volunteer Fire Company. He was president of the Allegany-Garrett County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, and was a member of that organization for 37 years.
He was vice president of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association and received a state of Maryland Governor’s Citation for his 62 years of community service in 2004.
He was a charter member of the Tri-Towns Rescue Squad and remained a member for many years.
He also served as a commissioner for the town of Luke for 16 years, having served from 1964 to 1966 and 1968 to 1982.
His memberships included the Bloomington United Methodist Church, Bloomington, the United States Marine Corps Leagues Maryland Mountain Chapter, Queens Point VFW 6775, McCoole, Pa., a member of Victory Post 155 American Legion, Westernport, Kelly Mansfield Post 52 American Legion, Piedmont, and was an active member of the WEPCO Federal Credit Union, serving on the credit committee and the board of directors.
He is survived by two sons, Robert E. Smith Sr. of Richmond, Va., and William D. Smith of Romney; two daughters, Faye A. Kuhlmann of Keyser and Yvonne Suzanne Dunnivan of Fredericksburg, Va.; one brother, Charles E. “Jock” Smith of McCoole; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
At his request, his body was cremated. There will be no visitation or services.

ROSS R. CODDINGTON
Ross Richard Coddington, 91, of Frostburg died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at the WMHS Frostburg Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Jan. 22, 1916, in Friendsville, he was the son of the late Eldridge Marcella and Addie (Friend) Coddington.
He was the founder of Coddington Lumber Company, which he moved to Frostburg in the early '60s. Coddington Lumber Company is now owned and operated by Phyllis and Carl Mazer and sons.
Richard is survived by his wife, Pauline Sellers Coddington; five daughters, Janet M. Barnes of Oakton, Va., Louise Speicher and husband William of Davidson, N.C., Phyllis Mazer and husband Carl of Frostburg, Ellen Stuck of Waynesburg, Pa., and Susie Coddington and husband Norton Clouse of Columbia; 10 grandchildren, Scott Barnes, Oakton, Charles Barnes and wife Ghe Su, Seoul, Korea, Michael Speicher and wife Skye, Orlando, Fla., Julia Flaherty and husband Chris, Davidson, Richard Mazer and wife Leanne, Barry Mazer and wife Vickie, T.R. Mazer and wife Allison, and Bart Mazer, all of Frostburg, Tracy Stuck, Columbus, Ohio, and Steven Stuck and wife Becky, Pittsburgh, Pa.; and 15 great-grandchildren, Dylan and Ethan Speicher, Emma and Clare Flaherty, Jake Hay and Ross Mazer, Jordin Mazer, Ashli, Taylor, Tanner, Turner, and Alyvia Mazer, and Claire, Matthew, and Hannah Stuck.
Friends were received at Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, where a Celebration of Life was held on Monday, Feb. 12, by his family members.
Interment was in Frostburg Memorial Park.

FRANKLIN F. FULTZ
Franklin F. Fultz, 62, of Terra Alta, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at his home.
Born on Jan. 26, 1945, in Franklin, W.Va., he was a son of the late Ona and Nellie Wolfe Fultz. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Jack Fultz; and one sister, Delores Wolfgang.
He is survived by three sons, Rodney Fultz and wife Kelley, Michael Fultz, and Tim Fultz and wife Katrina, all of Terra Alta; a daughter, Betsy VanMeter and husband Brian, Elk Garden, W.Va.; four brothers, Delano, Orlando, Jesse, and Willard Fultz, all of Terra Alta; two sisters, Erma DeWitt, Clay City, Ky., and Patricia Homick, Stanton, Ky.; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, where a service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with Rev. Berlin H. Wilhelm officiating.

ROBERT C. SPEICHER
Robert "Craig" Speicher, 49, of Grantsville died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at his residence after a long illness.
Born on June 20, 1957, in Cumberland, he was the son of Robert H. and Karolyn Kay (Beachy) Speicher, Grantsville. He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Hobert and Grace (Hershberger) Speicher and maternal grandparents Galen and Vena (Yost) Beachy.
Mr. Speicher was a freelance photographer and reporter for The Republican newspaper, and he graduated from Gallaudet College, Washington, D.C., and attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary, Harrisonburg, Va.
Surviving him, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Deanna “Dee” Speicher of Grantsville and Kristina “Kristi” Brown and husband Douglas of Hidden Valley, Pa.; two nieces, Katherine “Katie” Brown of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Lauren Brown of Hidden Valley; and a nephew, MacEwen Brown of Hidden Valley.
A private graveside service will be held in Grantsville Cemetery, with Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating.
