Jerome Williams
Jerome "Jerry" Williams, 75, professor emeritus of oceanography at the Naval Academy, died June 7, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after neurological surgery.
Mr. Williams was born in Toronto, Canada, and lived in Detroit, Mich., and Baltimore. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy, serving as an electronics technician until the end of World War II.
He received an undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Maryland in 1950 and was one of the first four students to be awarded a master's degree in oceanography from Johns Hopkins University.
In 1953, he married
Lelia Katherine Holden and they moved to Annapolis.
Mr. Williams worked on the research staff of the Chesapeake Bay Institute from 1952 to 1956 and as a marine physicist at Vitro Laboratories.
He joined the faculty of the Naval Academy in 1957 and taught there until his retirement in 1990.
He was active in research and development programs in underwater optics, marine pollution and oceanographic instruments. He also served as a consultant in estuarine pollution to various agencies and headed an energy-environmental study group at the academy.
He developed a salinometer considered to be the standard instrument for estuarine salinity measurement as well as a series of educational instruments, and was the author of college textbooks on oceanography and several scientific papers. In addition, he wrote two books for children.
He was a member of the Atlantic Estuarine Research Society, and was counselor and officer for the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Marine Technology Society.
He was active in Colonial Players of Annapolis for a number of years, serving as president, and was a former chairman of the Anne Arundel County Commission for Culture and the Arts. He was a charter member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis and served as chairman of the board of trustees.
He is survived by his wife, Lelia "Lee" Williams of Annapolis; one son, Robert Williams of Seattle; one daughter, Pamela Ayres of Suwanee, Ga.; and three granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 333 Dubois Road, Annapolis.
Carlo Powell
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home in New Orleans, La., for Carlo William Powell, who died June 5, 2002 in New Orleans. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park in that city.

The name of a son, Daniel R. Scheib of Edgewater, was inadvertently omitted in the obituary for Daniel Scheib of Stevensville that appeared on June 9.
Mr. Scheib, 55, died June 7 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson.
Beverly Beaver
Beverly Marlene Beaver, a 30-year resident of Deale, died June 6, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of natural causes. She was 68.
Ms. Beaver was born May 28, 1934, in Pennsylvania.
She was a member of the Deerfield Senior Center and was known for having a good memory.
She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Emma Beaver, and her sister, June Jordan.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., Annapolis. Graveside services will follow at 1 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 5829 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie.

Josephine Breshears
Josephine E. Breshears, 89, of Ginger Cove in Annapolis died June 5, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of natural causes.
Mrs. Breshears was born May 27, 1913, in Boliver, Mo.
She worked for a time in an aircraft factory just after World War II but her life was devoted to being a homemaker.
She lived in California and Arizona for many years and traveled all over the country with her husband, Robert W. Breshears, who died in 1999.
She enjoyed cooking and baking from scratch. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, oil painting, traveling and tracing her families roots back to England and France.
She was a member of the Arundel Club at Ginger Cove.
She is survived by her son, Robert R. Breshears of Harwood; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Ginger Cove Friendship Hall, 6000 River Crescent Drive in Annapolis. Services are private and arrangements are by John M. Taylor Funeral Home, Annapolis.
Janice Devorah
Janice Zoe Devorah, 34, of Pikesville died of cancer June 6, 2002 at the Gilchrist Center and was interred the following day at the Beth Jacob cemetery in Finksberg.
Mrs. Devorah was the salutatorian of the Annapolis High School in 1985 and graduated Suma Cum Laude from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 1989. She completed her graduate work at the University of Cincinnati and Towson University. She had been a school psychologist in the Baltimore School System.
She is survived by her husband, Stephen Devorah of Pikesville; her children, Shira, Tamar and Aryeh of the home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Singerman of Annapolis; and two brothers, Joel Singerman of West Orange, N.J. and Michael Singerman of Silver Spring.
Arrangements were by Sol Levinson and Brothers, 8900 Reistertown Road, Baltimore.

Frances Feeney
Frances Shipley Feeney, 80, a recent resident of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and formerly of Severna Park, died of respiratory failure May 15, 2002 at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs.
Mrs. Feeney was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Barbara A. Nappenberger Shipley. She graduated from Seton High School in Baltimore.
She retired from the federal government after working many years as the administrative assistant to the commanding officer of Fort George G. Meade.
She was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park.
Her husband of 37 years, retired Army Maj. Bartholomew "Bart" Edward Feeney, died July 16, 1990.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Visition is from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, followed by services at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
