James Mason
James "Jimmy" Delano Mason, 57, of Sebastian, Fla. and previously Annapolis, died of liver failure on May 29, 2002 at home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Mason was born Aug. 13, 1944, in Wyandotte, Mich. He graduated from Annapolis High School and was a retired postal carrier in Annapolis.
He was past Captain of Independent Vol. Fire Co. No. 2 in Annapolis and was a member of the Sebastian Eagles, Aerie #4067.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Dorothy Mason of Sebastian, Fla.; two stepsons, Dennis Meyers of Annapolis and Douglas Griffith of Sterling, Va.; two stepdaughters, Debbi Hanford of Fellsmere, Fla. and Denise DeGrange of Frederick; one brother, Bobby Mason of Annapolis; and two sisters, Charlene Faul of Glen Burnie and Gina Rogers of Annapolis.
Family and friends may gather at Independent Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2 meeting room, at the fire house at Ridgely and Taylor avenues from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Services will be private.
Arrangements are by John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis.

Delphia Murphy
Delphia Helena Murphy, 78, of Baltimore and Sherwood Forest died June 8, 2002 of natural causes at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mrs. Murphy was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Baltimore and was a graduate of Eastern High School. She was retired from the State of Maryland Court System.
She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Baltimore for more than 40 years and attended St. Mary's Church in Annapolis. She was a member of the Sherwood Forest Retirees and Our Lady of Victory Sodality. Her hobbies included golf, bowling, crabbing and the outdoors.
Her husband, Lawrence Murphy, died Nov. 5, 1998.
She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence P. Murphy of Pleasonton, Calif. and Timothy D. Murphy of Baltimore; one daughter, Sharon Sambuco of Sherwood Forest; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Neumann Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis. Burial will follow at the New Cathedral Cemetery, 4300 Old Frederick Road, Baltimore.
Daniel Scheib, Jr.
Daniel Scheib Jr., 55, of Stevensville died June 7, 2002 at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Towson. The cause of death was not available.
Mr. Scheib was born Oct. 15, 1946, in Baltimore and was a 1964 graduate of Poly Technical Institute High School. After high school, he began his career with the Maryland State Highway Administration before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1966. After being honorably discharged in 1969, he continued his career with the state. In 1977 he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Baltimore.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 278 and the Elks Lodge 2576. He was a Baltimore Ravens and Orioles fan and enjoyed golfing and being with his family.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Wiley.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara Scheib of Stevensville; his father, Daniel Scheib Sr. of Bel Air; one daughter, Amy L. Scheib of Stevensville; one brother, Ray Scheib of Overlea; two sisters, Nancy Miller of Fallston and Julie Hayden of Aberdeen; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Christopher's Church, Harbor Drive, Chester. Internment will follow in the Lakemont Memorial Gardens, 900 West Central Ave., Davidsonville.

Mary Jane Seward
Mary Jane Seward, 80, of Arnold, died of Alzheimer's disease June 6, 2002 at Severna Park Center, Genesis Eldercare Network, after an 11-year illness.
Mrs. Seward was born Oct. 2, 1921, and raised in St. Paul, Minn. A homemaker, she also lived in Montana and Silver Spring.
She was an avid golfer and participated in many activities at Heritage Harbour in Annapolis.
Her husband, Percy Rivers Seward Jr., died June 6, 1993.
Surviving are two sons, John Crockett Seward of Arnold and Gregory David Seward of Williamsburg, Va.; her daughter, Katherine Ann Seward Kirschbaum of Germantown; her brother, Bob Olson, and sister, Doris Elias, both of St. Paul, Minn.; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon tomorrow at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 400 Benfield Road in Severna Park, followed by the funeral service at noon. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.

Francis Abt
Francis E. Abt, 78, of Annapolis and Fryeburg, Maine, died June 10, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in North Conway, N.H., after a brief illness.
Born in Newark, N.J., Mr. Abt received a bachelor's degree from Lafayette College. During World War II, he was a fighter pilot with the 404th Fighter group, flying more than 50 missions and attaining the rank of captain when discharged.
At the time of his retirement in 1987, he was director of sales of the electronic components division of TRW Inc.
His interests included sailing, cooking and gardening.
Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Jean R. Leonard; a son, Robert Abt of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Linda S. Abt of Storrs, Conn.; a stepson, Christopher K. Leonard of Ridgefield, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Alison M. Leonard of Hull, Mass.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be private. Arrangements are by Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg, Maine. Donations may be made to the MPD Foundation, Box 273, 858 W. Armitage St., Chicago, IL 60614.
Lewis Cronin Jr.
Lewis "Lew" Eugene Cronin Jr., 48, of Eastport died of natural causes June 8, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Cronin was born March 25, 1954, in Wilmington, Del., and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1971. He received a bachelor of arts degree in musical education from Oberlin College.
For 10 years, he was a computer analyst for Mark Schultz Associates in Annapolis. He also worked in audio sales at Rickey's and other audio stores and taught for three years at Abingdon Friends School in Pennsylvania.
He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church and acted with Colonial Players, appearing in "Hay Fever" and "Blood Brothers." He also sang bass for the Annapolis Chorale and was considered a virtuoso on the computer.
He loved music, singing, playing and composing on the guitar and piano. He also enjoyed bicycling, acting, reading, writing, art and antiques and family and friends.
The son of Alice Webber Cronin of Annapolis and the late Lewis Eugene Cronin Sr., he is survived by two brothers, John Cronin of Invermere, British Columbia, and David Cronin of Annapolis.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 333 Dubois Road. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.
Homer Dowdy
Homer Earle Dowdy, 79, a 15-year resident of Annapolis, died suddenly of an aneurysm on June 12, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born July 16, 1922, in Flint, Mich., to the late Homer G. and Gladys Russell Dowdy, Mr. Dowdy was a 1940 graduate of Flint Public High School. In 1947, he graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois with a bachelor of arts degree.
During World War II, he served in the Army in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 to 1946.
He was assistant news editor of Christian Life and Times in 1947 and editor of The Milepost, a weekly newspaper in Ames, Iowa, from 1947 to 1948. He was a reporter, assistant city editor and columnist for The Flint Journal from 1948 to 1962.
Mr. Dowdy was a freelance writer for one year, and, in 1963, was employed as a coordinator for the C.S. Mott Foundation in Flint serving as vice-president for programs and senior vice-president until 1983. He was a consultant and executive vice-president for Food for the Hungry International in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1982 to 1987, when he retired.
He was an author of many books, including "Building a Christian Home, " "Christ's Witchdoctor, " "The Bamboo Cross, " "Out of the Jaws of the Lion, " "Christians Have Troubles, Too, " "Christ's Jungle, " "Speak My Words" and, a novel, "Loving Luddy."
He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Maryland and a civic testimonial from Flint in 1982. He also received National Recreation and Parks Association citations in 1975 and 1982 and an Associated Press national citation in 1954. He was named Outstanding Young Man of 1957 by the Flint Jaycees and received an American Political Science Association national award in 1956.
Mr. Dowdy was a member of the Annapolis Evangelical Presbyterian Church and its Missions program. He enjoyed writing and gardening and was an avid jogger.
He and his wife, the former Nancy E. Showalter, would have celebrated 55 years of marriage tomorrow.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, David A. Dowdy of Northfield, Mass.; five daughters, Margaret E. Denning of Riverside, Ill., Rebecca N. Johnson of Wakefield, R.I., Barbara L. Wills of Columbus, Ohio, Jennifer L. Rasmussen of Elmwood Park, Ill., and Susan J. Dix of Wheaton, Ill.; one sister, Ferne Hutchinson of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and 13 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, 710 Ridgely Ave. Burial will be in Green Mount Cemetery, West Chester, Pa.
