William Burrell
William Carl "Bill" Burrell, 53, of Annapolis and formerly of Saranac Lake and Albany, N.Y., a highly decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War, died unexpectedly June 24, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Easton.
Born Dec. 30, 1948, in Malone, N.Y., Mr. Burrell graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1967. He was employed by Sadexco-Marriott Food Services as a manager at Northrop-Grumman in Annapolis. Prior to moving to Maryland, he was the food manager for DAKA Foods at the New York State Department of Corrections Training Academy in Albany.
From 1968 to 1971 he served in the Army and was in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 with the 191st Assault Helicopter Company, known as the "Bounty Hunters."
He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with clusters, the Air Medal with clusters, a Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.
Mr. Burrell was a charter member and co-founder of the Tri-County Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America in Albany. He enjoyed fishing and nature and being with his daughter, "AA."
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Clarke-Burrell of Glen Burnie; his daughter, Adrienne D. Burrell of Glen Burnie; his mother, Alys Burrell Farrelly of Annapolis; four brothers, Richard Rushlow of York, Maine, Jon Burrell of Annapolis, Tim Burrell of Massena, N.Y., and Tom Burrell of Tacoma, Wash.; and one sister, Sally Stephenson-Roach of Annapolis.
An informal gathering will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.

Ann Elion
Ann Van Esso Elion, 90, died June 26, 2002 at Spa Creek Center, Genesis ElderCare Network, where she had lived since 1996.
Born in Rotterdam in The Netherlands, Mrs. Elion moved to the United States in 1939 with her husband, Dr. Edward Elion, who died in 1961. She had lived in Washington, D.C., and in Silver Spring prior to moving to Annapolis. She had also spent summers in Sherwood Forest.
During World War II, she volunteered with the American Red Cross at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington. She volunteered for 25 years with the Meals on Wheels program and for the Centers for the Handicapped. She was a former member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Washington, where she was a deacon and member of the Fidelis Circle.
She was a member of the Civinettes of the Civitan Club in Washington and of the Sherwood Forest Club and the Sherwood Forest Retirees Club.
She bowled with the Ladies League of Sherwood Forest and also with teams in Washington.
Her interests were travel, reading, doing needlepoint and playing bridge.
Survivors are one daughter, Dorothy Elion of St. Paul, Minn.; one son, Erik Elion of Sherwood Forest; and five grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Hans Van Esso and Elly Van Esso.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, Duke of Gloucester and Conduit streets.

Nina Lou Maddox
Nina Lou Maddox, 87, of Annapolis and formerly of Washington, D.C., died of heart failure June 25, 2002 at the Annapolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Maddox was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Halls, Tenn., and moved to Annapolis 15 years ago. She worked as a waitress for more than 30 years in restaurants in the Chinatown section of Washington.
She could speak Chinese and enjoyed quilting, crocheting and other crafts.
Her husband, Bruce William Maddox Sr., died in 1966. She was the mother of the late Bruce William Maddox Jr.
Surviving are one son, Gary Leon Maddox of Atlantic City, N.J.; three daughters, Grace Ruth Resnick of Leesburg, Fla., and Nora Elizabeth Dulaney and Nina Lou Wooten of Annapolis; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave.
Mordie Spriggs
Mordie Allen Roosevelt Spriggs Sr., who celebrated his 100th birthday last year, died June 25, 2002 at his home in Lothian. He was a resident of southern Anne Arundel County for more than 80 years.
Mr. Spriggs was born Oct. 5, 1901, in Calvert County and relocated to Anne Arundel County in his teens. He worked throughout the county as a farmer and school bus contactor with Mordie Spriggs Bus.
In October 2001, when he turned 100, he was recognized and received executive citations from the White House, the Governor's Office, the Maryland General Assembly, the Comptroller's Office, the County Executive and County Council and other legislators. His photograph was published on Oct. 7, 2001, at a family celebration of his birthday.
He loved the outdoors, hunting and baseball and remained a very active and devoted religious man.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rebecca Rice, two sons, Norris G. Spriggs and Mordie Spriggs Jr., and one daughter, Doris I. Spriggs.
Surviving are his second wife, Winifred W. Spriggs of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three daughters, Evelyn Coleman of Baltimore, Dolores Dixon of Randallstown and Brenda Rice of Lothian; three sons, Allen Spriggs of Jewell, Francis Spriggs of Mitchellville and George Spriggs Sr. of Lothian; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Union United Methodist Church, 274 W. Bayfront Road, Lothian, with services to follow. Burial will be in the Spriggs family cemetery in Jewell.

Elizabeth Debord
Elizabeth Catherine Debord, 76, a resident of Pasadena for 40 years, died June 18, 2002 at Future Care-Chesapeake in Arnold after a long illness.
Mrs. Debord was born May 8, 1926, in Mississippi and was a homemaker. She was a member of God Gospel Lighthouse Church in Pasadena.
She enjoyed shopping for antiques.
She was married
for 36 years to Wilbur F. Debord before he died in 1991.
Also surviving are two sons, L. Harold Harrison of Severna Park and Mikey R. Wilbanks of Pasadena; two daughters, Debbie C. Murry and Jessica Ashbrook of West Virginia; two brothers, Billy and Freddy Bump of Lawrence, Ala.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow at Stallings Funeral Home, 3111 Mountain Road, Pasadena, where services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will follow in Meadowridge cemetery in Elkridge.
Elizabeth Giblin
Elizabeth Veronica Giblin, 88, of Arnold, died of natural causes June 19, 2002 at St. Elizabeth's Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Baltimore after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Giblin was born April 20, 1914, and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to this area in 1966. She retired as manager of the Chase-Lloyd House in Annapolis in 1983.
She enjoyed reading, painting, poetry, the Orioles and her family.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Veronica Burkitt of Arnold; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth's Chapel, 3320 Benson Ave., Baltimore. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.
